True, when McGucket regained his sanity he still had his son and some of his friends to reunite with. Even if Simon regains his sanity he'll find that everyone that he has ever known is long dead, there are barely any other humans around and the world is like a crazy person's day dream compared to his time. It might be kinder to stay insane.

The Simon reveal, when the whole show changed forever! Also, I think Marceline's Closet is really funny. The moment when Jake shape shifts into Finn just laying on the floor cracks me up every time!
I love how they lull people into thinking Holly Jolly Secrets is going to be a typical early seasons randomness episode of little importance, a silly little pseudo Christmas episode, then *bam*. Redefines not only everything Ice King does in the same episode, but the entire show so far.
Tom Kenny is so good. I've only known him for his goofy roles, such as Spongebob or the Ice King, but there's so much emotion and desperation in that Simon scene and, as you can already guess, it's far from the last time you'll see it.
It's interesting that most reaction channels missed the obvious reference to Dementia in Ice King's personality. Doing some crazy shit, commiting acts that would be considered crimes when most times he just takes them as games, I mean he even forgets about his secret tapes when Ice King mentioned them as his, minutes before Finn returns them
Finally we have reached Simon petrikov I love this episode so much it made me feel completely different about ice king before this episode every time I saw him I thought how goofy and funny he is but after this episode i just felt sadness
So Ice King's actions have been put into a whole new light as of Holly Jolly Secrets. Since his obsession with Princesses is revealed to have been him desperately searching for his former love Betty and failing to do so. Plus, his age needs to be taken into consideration as well. As of the two parter, we have no idea how old he is. But it is clear that he's an old man who is suffering from memory lost. Making him someone who only has the memory of searching for his beloved Princess. Also, this now raises a question regarding the crown. As we have confirmation that Simon had bought it, but as the ice King he stated to have made it from stolen magic. So why is that the case? Is it connected to the visions he saw? Well you just have to keep watching to find out.
Ice King is such a nuanced and interesting character. We all knew there was more to him then what's on the surface, but it went so much deeper then u could ever expect.
I imagine Marceline was singing that she has no friends because she said earlier the songwriting she was doing was based on the last 500 years of her journal entries. So, she's not literally saying she has no friends present tense. She's making a concept album based on her past journal entries
Phil, the naked humanoid background character you've asked about, is from the episode "City of Thieves" (Season 1 Episode 13). He also appeared as one of the Naked Old People in "Blood Under the Skin" (Season 2 Episode 4).
Such a big moment and in the Christmas special to boot. It truly was a wild revelation watching as the show aired and not realizing the full ramifications and lasting impact of this reveal. Pay close attention to how Simon in his crazed Ice King state is treated from this point on. Love the vids!
After this, Finn's view on Ice King changes. He tries to be a bit more understanding with him because he used to be a normal guy named Simon who was corrupted by the crown. He's still Simon somewhere inside. But wait, my dude, because there are more truth bombs about to drop soon and it will blow your mind!
Yes! Holly Jolly Secrets! This is the reaction I was waiting for!!!! “Drama bomb” was the right way for Jake to describe it, the whole episode was played as a fun “making fun of Ice King” situation and then suddenly, BOOM! The Simon story just drops down on you, leaving you shocked!
To be fair I don't think Finn ever got "the talk" and is just in shock that she's "missing something" He's literally the only human in Ooo so he doesn't have experience with these things.
Honestly loved watching your commentary on Ice King leading up to this, especially those moments when you sympathized or felt sorry for him. Kinda just made me evil chuckle and think to myself "Just wait, it's gonna get a whole LOT worse". Ice King or Simon is one of those truly tragic characters, at the beginning one would dislike or find him despicable and rightly so, but as the show goes on it becomes increasingly obvious that several things are not quite right in the head for him which kinda makes one feel somewhat for him, but it's episodes like these that give us glimpses of the one who came before that really put into perspective his weird mental processes and changes the filter in how one sees him. He goes from being creepy/silly and funny to being silly and funny/very sad and tragic.
Idk if you already know this yet, and I think this is more of a warning than a spoiler. I also don't know if you'd already seen this ep yet, but there's a whole episode with literally just about SPIDERS. BIG AND SMALL SPIDERS, and I think you're really, really, REALLY NOT gonna like it. I'm not afraid of them but there are definitely a lot of unpleasant scenes there. I don't think it's a plot heavy one or you're gonna miss anything of you skip it, so if you like, you can definitely skip that one. Just for your own mental health's sake 😅
Funfacts: Ice king seems to be more interested in PB is because she may have remind ice king of betty his princess, both PB and betty are science lovers and have pinkish skin which probably triggers ice king's familiar feelings for his fiancee but he doesn't know it due to the crown and his corrupted mind
The segment with Ice King after the Simon reveal just goes to show how far into madness he has reached, when he can't even realise the bigger meaning of that reveal than him used to wearing glasses
He wasn't there for that scene, not even in a sucked-soul form; he flew away after soiling his tunic ("Completely by choice!"), and judging by that, I think it's safe to say he wouldn't be anywhere near them anymore. There's a chance that Finn could've kept the recording, and Ice King could've heard it during any of the times he's broken into their house.
