You are not wrong. Vishnu is the cause, and Brahma is the creator. The universe would be sustained till there is a cause for it to exist. When there is no cause it would be destroyed by Shiva. So you are right, Vishnu is the balance, the cause that drives us all, regardless of organic or inorganic.

It's called Leela in Hinduism the divine play. Basically there are the 3 main forms of the ultimate reality or consciousness called Brahman. Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer in every universe projected by Brahman in Mahamaya (illusion). So in simpler terms these 3 are the forms of Brahman and it plays a divine game across the infinite number of universes. So every time new universes are created and destroyed by these 3 forms. A small mistake Barhma was cursed by Lord shiva to not be whorpshiped as much as vishnu because one day, vishnu and brahma were arguing about who was more powerful. Then both the gods challenge each other that if vishnu reached the bottom of the shiv ling faster than barhma could reach the top then vishnu was the better good and vice versa.
