    Take control of your borderline bridges and you can defeat thousands of enemies with one army

      @@heberrodriguez3310 he did mention, he said he wasn't sure which one to choose but picked Medi instead, but to be fair, his points stand for both towns, you have chokes for both of them, allowing a good defense, and while he did mention other advantages, he says his choice is mostly from a positional standpoint, not economic or whatnot. I would consider Iuvavum (just north of Patavium) a strong, strategic settlement as it sits right at the end of a passage through the mountains of Northern Italy. When I play as Germania, I use that settlement to guard the my southern border and provide a staging point for any incursions into Italy.

    My top ten(not in order) : Athens,Corinth,Sparta,Kydonia,Pergamun,Tarsus,Alexandria,Memphis,Campus Getae,Rhodes,south Italy provinces,Carthage. So,taking these provinces or most of them helps you A LOT in campaign not just for their location but also for the resources they provide and keep in mind that the sea trade will make you the richest faction by far. For me,these are the provinces that have helped me the most and i believe they are the most important to conquer strategically speaking.

    I have a problem with some city:
    -Bylazora shold protect Thessalonica, but its still vulerable from 4 other ways. Even if its guarded, it means nothing. On the other hand, Thessalonica can provide troops and money early on, and it separates more front from eachother.
    -Crete has no capability to build ships early on, also a poor province comparedto other greek cities. With ships you can block the water without that island from Athen, Sparta and/or Rhodos. Rhodos also provide a HUGE boost to you economy and can build strong ships pretty early.
    -Cothus (the armenian city) defends nothing. Blocked borders against the nomads just dont worth much, but eah, in multiplayer, it might be usefull.
    -Memphis. Alexandria give everything as Memphis, but also a signifivant trade income. But even with that, It defends nothing, nobody comes from the desert, more likely to use ships.
    My honorable mentions:
    -Babylon, huge income for late game.
    -Carthage, strongest city in its region, in money and in militarly, and good position for a naval block.
    -Londonium, relatively strong, good rout for the coast of france, also who hold it, controlles the british island
    -Tarentum, good foothold for envaders, good naval def for italians.
    -Thessalonica, Athene, Rhodos, Alexandria, as i said earlier

  • @RobBCactive
    @RobBCactive 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Funny, some of these regions, I perceive more as a liability, because taking them early probably gets you warring with 2 other factions.
    Using navies and trade bonus of Mediterranean ports, mean I'd rate Carthage as strategic, giving people and high unit level.
    Then in early game Salona/Segestica matter for Julii/Brutii because of relatively lucrative mines.
    Rhodes is a key wonder, it's an insane trade bonus.
    But the strategic value of regions change during the game. Often good river defenses provide massacre choke points, bottle up hordes with economy.
    Island bases can provide good footholds, using range of navies to meet threats or more likely cause them to enemy factions.
    Good large cities matter a lot though, in a way that Osca simply never has to me, I just roll it up in either coastal sweep or a full Iberican campaign after los Ibéricos estaban locos

    • @jpjpjp453
      @jpjpjp453 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree about Salona and Segestica. As the Julii the first thing after capturing Segesta is to go after Salona and then Segestica. After things heat up with the Gauls and you get the two provinces to the north, Narbo Martius is the key city heading west. The thing about Osca is when playing VH/VH you'll have a seemingly endless number of enemies coming at you from multiple directions and defending Narbo Martius will be a full time task . Once you take Osca, the Spanish threat is neutralized as they'll concentrate on retaking it instead.

    • @wnd9434
      @wnd9434 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I usually create a buffer zone that i never fully defeated one faction just kept only one province for them because i dont want to fight a new war with another faction

  • @puasami5722
    @puasami5722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I agree with all of these besides Osca. Like you, i thought that if i blocked off that mountain pass i would be ok. I learned the hard way that armies can actually walk around along the coast of either side! Anyway besides that, great vid :)

    • @jonsnow7092
      @jonsnow7092 ปีที่แล้ว

      watchtowers exist. the pathway on the south leads south to Osca so you can intercept anything moving that direction and the route up north takes a gazillion turns due to the very right terrain and 1 million kilometers away from any road. a watchtower there literally allows you to recruit a big army before anyone gets near one of your cities.

    Luvanum, just north of the alps is very good. Not the city itself but the river crossing in the province.
    Placing a moderate army with lots of archers on the bridge at Luvanum will mean you can easily defend against Barbarians to the north.
    Bridge battles are very easy, even on VH/VH, the AI does not recognise the force multiplier effect of an army guarding a bridge.

    Massilia is incredibly defensible. To the east, Mediolanium is two or more turns' march away (unless a Roman faction has fully built up the roads), giving you time to recruit reinforcements, retrain troops, and garrison the bridge. To the West, you have TWO bridges that you can use to defend, so that even if the first bridge gets overwhelmed by three or four waves of enemy stacks, they'll be too worn out to overwhelm the second bridge garrison.

    Wouldn't Porolissum also make a good strategic point? While I know those territories aren't threatened that much, it can make for a good stronghold while expanding north-east. The mountain ranges encircle it and there's only a few mountain passes, so setting a few forts at those passages can slow down most armies and make you gain a few turns to train more troops. It is also not too far from Campus Iazigeus and Campus Scythium, which can provide good economic support due to naval trades and can be reinforced pretty easily with armies trained in Porolissum.

    • @maxdecphoenix

      massilia is easy to take because it's owned by rebels at the start of julii campaign, but the gauls will quickly attack you if you take it (they'll attack you if you don't take it as well, obviously). But without spears it's very costly to defend. I prefer to let the gauls build up mediolanium a bit and then just steal it from them to save on building. Mediolanium is in no way an economic province. It has no port, and only 3 land trade partners. It has high fertility, but w/e. I typically just make it the main military center while focusing economic growth in arretium, arriminum, segesta and patavium.

    • @theblitzraider3563
      @theblitzraider3563 ปีที่แล้ว

    It all depends on which faction you got

  • @Inali097
    @Inali097 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video is essentially exactly wrong, and the comments are a better source of information. Don't guard the grass - what's important to hold are urbanized centers that can quickly retrain troops or that provide an economic advantage. Don't worry about controlling Bylazora, for example, if you control Thessalonica; worry that guarding Bylazora will cost your advanced units two turns retraining in Thessalonica before returning to the front line, and that those professional units may be destroyed if left diminished in the poorer settlement, not to mention the fact that it's easier for the enemy to ambush you from behind those "defensive" mountains.
    If you can control Athens, Rhodes or Seleucia for the economic advantage, do it early. If you can take Carthage, Arretium/Tarsus, Sparta, Thessalonica, Memphis, etc. in a contentious territory, prioritize it so that you can build and retrain a professional army to harass, seize and control the surrounding territories. In R:TW logistics is king.
