This song was recorded thru Delphi records in 1958 as a "b" side to Donna. Richard Steven Valenzuela was 17 years old and still in high school when he was signed to his record label. Sadly his musical career was only 8 months long as he died in a plane crash 5 miles north of clear lake Iowa on 2/3/1959 along with Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson.
Richie Valens died tragically at 17, only 8 months into his music career, yet look at how much great music this young man created! I often wonder, how he would have continued to influence the evolution/progression of rock and roll over the generations. FANTASTIC movie about his life, La Bamba which is definitely worth a watch! Great soundtrack, too!
This song went to #22 on the Billboard charts in 1958. And it ranked #345 on the Rolling Stones Magazine top 500 songs in Rock and Roll history. His other song which was the flipside was" Oh Donna" which went to #3 on billboard also in 1958. Glad to see your doing another Ritchie Valens song. Please react to "Oh Donna" and "OOH' My Head." Note: Ritchie himself could not speak Spanish. He was born in Tacoma California in 1941. He had to learn the song, and its pronunciation by doing it over and over again. With a Ticano Rock and Roll beat. "La Bamba was a Mexican dance." The rest as they say is history.

La Bamba is a dance. It is a dance from Mexico that people do at parties; especially, at weddings. It's a dance where you stomp your feet. It is kind of like the electric slide (at party dance).
Guys, there's a song by Mac Davis done in the late 70's or early 80's called Hooked On Music. It talks about how a young kid from Lubbock reacts to the early days of Rock & Roll. Even the music is a throwback to that bygone era. Give it a listen.

I just can't remember if it was for either elementary school Spanish lessons or a Cub Scouts project. I do remember it was with the help of a classmates mom who was a native speaker of Spanish. She taught Spanish lessons in our schools a few times a week & her son was in my Cub Scouts troop. I remember it was an old folk song about a dance (Bamba). The narrator was hesitant to do the dance (Bamba) as he was inexperienced & inhibited. The line... Yo no soy marinero, Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan, soy capitan. Translates... I'm not a sailor, I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain, I'm a captain, I'm a captain. Basically saying he's a refined captain uncomfortable with letting loose not a sailor on shore leave setting aside his inhibitions drinking & dancing. I believe that's the gist.
I love this song...I too don't speak Spanish. The beat makes you want to dance. Too bad we lost him at a young age in a plane crash. You need to listen to his other hits!!!RIP Ritchie!
If I remember correctly his name was Ritchie Valenzuela and his manager shortened it. And yes, sadly he was only 17 when he died. We lost 3 of the best rock n rollers of that time, Buddy Holley, The Big Bopper and Ritchie, such a sad day.

Mel, your short haircut frames your face, beautifully. Never mind, you turned to the side and I can see it’s still long. 😂 Thank you to you and Shawn, sharing your listening.
Richie Valenz real name was Ricardo Valenzuela. He was American but had to pay tribute to his Hispanic heritage. Basically the song says soy capitan "I'll be your captain. Love this from the1950's.
When I die, one of the first shows I want to see will be a re-creation of the Winter Dance Party. Everyone who was involved is up there now, with the exception of Dion.
'"Para bailar "La Bamba", se necesito una Polka de gracia..." which means "To dance "La Bamba" you need a graceful polka...." La Bamba is a type of dance popular in Northern Mexico in the late 1950s; however, it was just a folk song but Valenzuela made it into an American Rock n Roll hit to which young people were singing and dancing along.
Just for you Shawn I'm going to translate what Frankie is saying. To dance the Bamba you have to leave you have a little bit of Grace and a little bit of soul. I am not a sailor I'm the captain of the ship so let's all dance the Bomba.
I'm back just to let you know this song is about the dance called The Labamba. He's telling everybody how to do it in the song. There's a part where he's trying to tell people that he's the captain not a follower, but in the song it's kinda backwards, because that's just how Spanish is, in the song he says he's not a soldier, he's the captain, so he wants you to follow him.
Ritchie ( 5/13/1941-2/3/1959) style was the forefather of "Chicano" rock . A style of rock music performed Mexican American ( i.e. icon Carlos Santana). "LA BAMBA" a song base on a Mexican folk song. It became a hit in 1958.
The lyrics and translation are roughly: First verse: Para bailar la bamba To dance the bamba Para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia To dance the bamba one needs a little grace Una poca de gracia pa' mí, pa' ti, ya arriba y arriba A little grace for me, for you, now raise the roof and raise the roof (arriba literally means up but the usage is more like raise the roof in English) Y arriba, y arriba, por ti seré And raise the roof and raise the roof, I'll be for you Por ti seré, por ti seré I'll be for you, I'll be for you Second verse: Yo no soy marinero I'm not a sailor Yo no soy marinero, soy capitán I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain Soy capitán, soy capitán I'm a captain, I'm a captain
Ritchie Valens is the original artist of this song, but, when I was a little girl, I found a Neil Diamond 45' record, one side was the song 'Shilo' and on the other side was the song 'Labamba', well Neil Diamond's song 'Shilo', at the time was the hit, but, I was curious about the song 'Labamba', so, I decided to play it on the record player and I liked it better than the song 'Shilo'. This was my introduction to Spanish, I was only 5 years old. After that I wanted to know more Spanish, and That's what I did, I was hooked. I have respect for the originator of this song, but the first version I heard was Neil Diamond's, so I'm a little bias.
Para bailar la Bamba means " in order to dance the la Bamba" and se necesita, una poca la gracia means " it is necessary to have a little bit of grace" so the first line is " in order to dance the la Bamba, it is necessary to have a little bit of grace". Espero que esto te haya ayudado.

Basically saying he's a refined captain uncomfortable with letting loose not a sailor on shore leave setting aside his inhibitions drinking & dancing. I believe that's the gist.
Rip Ritchie. You paved the way for us Latinos to make our mark on music. We have more to prove in life
I love this song...I too don't speak Spanish.
❤️🥰❤️ Hello S & M SQUAD, HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!! ☃️❄️🎄⭐️ I’ve asked my husband AND my mother-in-law,what the lyrics mean, and neither one is able to explain them to me! LOL!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Anyway, it’s still an AMAZING GOOD TIME, no matter the lyrics!!! ⭐️ I LOVE your reactions, as always!!! ⭐️

The original artist was a 10-year-old boy. Then Richie Valens heard it and created a rock version in 1958.
Los Lobos played in the film and created their own version. Even made a music video in 1988
Oh and here's the lyric translation

What’s amazing about this song is there’s nothing to really date it. It sounds like it could be contemporary no matter what era you listen to it in. It’s just a damn good song!
you got 2 of the 3 that died in that plane crash together, Ritchie, Buddy Holly, and The big bopper. "the day the music died" they called it
Mel, your short haircut frames your face, beautifully.
The first Rock song in spanish 1957.The song la bamba is from Veracruz Mexico.Ritchie is from Mexican descent.
The words mean, "To dance La Bamba, you need a little grace, for you, for me, for whoever wants it. I'm not a sailor, I'm the captain. . .etc."
Richie was a brother...check out Donna, such a gorgeous song to his sweetheart, it would melt even Trump's heart... just beautiful!
How's my favorite Couple doing looking great you two
'"Para bailar "La Bamba", se necesito una Polka de gracia..." which means "To dance "La Bamba" you need a graceful polka...." La Bamba is a type of dance popular in Northern Mexico in the late 1950s; however, it was just a folk song but Valenzuela made it into an American Rock n Roll hit to which young people were singing and dancing along.
Now I see why Buddy loved him so 😁that kid had skills
I would give Ritchie a 1000 thumbs up if I could 👍🎶🎵
Just for you Shawn I'm going to translate what Frankie is saying. To dance the Bamba you have to leave you have a little bit of Grace and a little bit of soul. I am not a sailor I'm the captain of the ship so let's all dance the Bomba.
One of California’s finest in the 50’s!!❤️
La Bamba is a classic song.
My favorite part of the song i'm not the guy who drives. I'm the captain
This was the greatest song of his tragically short career and almost no one had any idea what he was singing about.
Ritchie ( 5/13/1941-2/3/1959) style was the forefather of "Chicano" rock . A style of rock music performed Mexican American ( i.e. icon Carlos Santana). "LA BAMBA" a song base on a Mexican folk song. It became a hit in 1958.
The lyrics and translation are roughly:
First verse:
Para bailar la bamba
To dance the bamba
Para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia
To dance the bamba one needs a little grace
Una poca de gracia pa' mí, pa' ti, ya arriba y arriba
A little grace for me, for you, now raise the roof and raise the roof (arriba literally means up but the usage is more like raise the roof in English)
Y arriba, y arriba, por ti seré
And raise the roof and raise the roof, I'll be for you
Por ti seré, por ti seré
I'll be for you, I'll be for you
Second verse:
Yo no soy marinero
I'm not a sailor
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitán
I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain
Soy capitán, soy capitán
I'm a captain, I'm a captain
A great young rockstar who’s life got cut short because of one decision. What would you have done? RIP
"Eres tu" is another Spanish song that hit the top 10 in the US.
Of you're doing a deep dive on early Rock & Roll you gotta check out Chuck Berry. He really laid the foundation for what was to follow. He is the most influential early Rock artist..
Me gusta que pongáis una canción en español, gracias.

He is a English/Spanish singer and plays rock n roll.
Yes it Spanish. Ritchie's real name was Ricardo Valenzuela (hope I spelled that right). He was Mexican but didn't speak Spanish. This was an old Mexican folk song that was played quite differently. Ritchie learned how to pronounce the words (I don't know where) and made it rock.
He was from California usa not mexican. Chicano
@@koki84ji7 Picky, picky, picky.
The song American Pie is about the plane crash that killed The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens....the day the music died. 😢
