  • When reading John Irving, you get the feeling that you are sitting at a table and one of the characters is handing you a glass of wine. Irving is one of the world’s most read writers: More than 10-million copies of his 12 novels - including his breakthrough “The World According To Garp” and the 1980 “Ciderhouse Rules” - have been sold in 30 languages.
In 2012 Irving celebrated his 70th birthday and his new book “In One Person” was published. The film visualizes the elation in Irving’s novels (including his last one), a factor which makes him a literary figure of global format: a reality available for everyone.

I haven't read all his novels but I read maybe 10 most when I was in prison..I found myself laughing out loud or even crying...that is what a book is supposed to do..one of my favorite authors of all time..carried me through hard times

I'm actually in the middle of writing my debut novel, and I find John Irving the most inspirational to listen to.

Magnificent documentary! I have loved this author since I was a teenager. (40 years now) He opened my mind on a lot of delicate subjects. "The moment when a book is published, the window when it’s available to the public and people are talking to you about it, is very small” says John Irving. But the memories, might I had, and influences last a lifetime. Thank you John Irving ♥️

This is a wonderful film about John Irving. Great interviews, great excerpts from the novels, with excellent visuals throughout... The overall tone is a perfect fit for contemplating the author's life and work.

I'm not a writer. But I trueling love this movie. When it came out in theaters I was only 9 years old. My parents were going through an ugly divorce then, & for a 9 year old it was more raw emotional reality for one to chew and swallow down. My father and two older brothers left home, & I was left alone with my abusive mother.
The night the movie came out my mother, and I had been invited on a date her new suitor to go see it. They assumed it was going to be a comedy since Mr. Williams was in it. I confess I did too, but as we watched through the movie. Their interest grew further away from the show as mine increased. It was the first time I had been introduced to the Human Interest Story. It has since then changed this creatures view of the world. It helped me to feel less alone at that time, & to see that their are others out there going through life's struggle. Thank you.

Beautifully done documentary! Brilliant blending of interview, image, and excerpts from Irving's books.

An honest to god novelist with the skills and the guts to take a story where it needs to go. It's very hard to define him as a writer, but he's excellent, insightful, extremely funny, thrilling, and deeply moving. I feel the adaptations really don't do his books justice.

this is my all time favourite author.
reason: he makes life interesting and funny, while including the tragedies.
every day I think of some lines- especially from Hotel Newhampshire.
can't wait to read the last chairlift.

Too many ads! It's way too much that I almost wanted to middle finger whoever is concerned with this annoying tragedy. boring excerpt reading we want more of him talk about writing, how he writes until the end, has he ever been to the phase of writer block. how he overcomes it. NOt this annoying ads and reading.
