When you see the spring that comes out at the farthest right (yellow column), and you then rush, you have to watch the NEXT spring and make SURE it lands left of the yellow column one. Also, another thing you have to keep in mind is that the springs do NOT come out at the same intervals. Sometimes a spring comes out "sooner" and sometimes "later" than normal.
My highest score was in the arcades (around 1990?), at a Time Out (where i had best score record) of either 203k or 206k on level 8. Most of my deaths were on this elevator "triple jacks" board :(
This only works about 60% of the time. To master this level, you need to know that there are two types of Springs: A & B. A springs take their first bounce slightly more to the left; B springs slightly more to the right. You have to start your run toward the ladder as a B spring passes over your head. If the very next Spring is an A, you can continue your run and climb the ladder; if the very next Spring is a B, return to your start point or you will be killed while climbing the ladder.

You get an extra life at 7000 points (although the machine can be set to award it at 10,000, 15,000, or 20,000 points instead). You can't get any more, just the one. Other that, you only get as many as the machine is set to give you at the start of the game (usually 3, but can be set as high as 6).
On the first elevator level you don't even have to worry about the springs at all. Once you climb up to the top platform go left slightly and then as soon as any spring bounces over your head just make your way up the ladder. It only works in the first elevator level. Don't do it after that or you'll be dead.
this is a good video to show on what type of spring to run on BUT if you watch steve or bill play you will notice they some times run back and wait to go again,, its not becose they mess up there timing the same spot on the eleveter to the left you have to start your run on the first right but watch the next spring becose if it lands the same as the one you start to run on it will kill you ,,you need the second spring to be to the left the firt elevtor ( i hope that makes sents)
uhfnutbar1 EXAAAAACTLY. You dont have to wait for the perfect spring. I always thought you did. You just have to wait for one close to the right and then like you said, wait for one on the left while running up the stairs. But to do this, your hand eye coordination must be perfect which Bills and a few others certainly are. You can always wait for that perfect spring to come and then time it perfect but that takes a while and the slightest hesitation and you're dead climbing up. You have to rely on the hope that the next spring will move more towards the left and these top players dont rely on luck.

i would seriously pay someone to come beat this damn game for me. I cant beat donkey kong n64 without beating the arcade game and its driving me INSANE
Did you ever beat it? You have to to beat it twice: once on normal (it exits & gives you a golden banana), and again on lvl 2 difficulty (Pauline is replaced with an N64 logo). You can play again after this on lvl 3 difficulty, but it doesn't give you a reward. The DK64 arcade donkey kong is unusual because you only have one life, and the game ends (doesn't loop) after 4 levels. The difficulty is comparable to the original arcade version, not the vastly easier NES version (which omits the pie factory level, though there is a rare version for wii & 3DS virtual console called "Donkey Kong Original Edition" that has the easier difficulty of the NES version, but readds the missing pie factory level)

On the shortest spring (the spring that bounces to the left of the elevator shaft )

Does anyone know the correct dipswitch setting for my original 1981 Donkey Kong Arcade? Any help would be appreciated.
this method is not foolproof. however watching where the spring falls on the otherside like steve weibe explains in king of kong is.

Nintendo needs to redo Donkey Kong with more stages. It's still a great game to play.
They did. It was released for Game Boy in 1994, and it has a whopping 100 levels! This new version was simply (and stupidly) titled "Donkey Kong".
