Very few fighters in boxing history have been able to carry their power up through multiple weight classes but The Hitman is certainly one of them. Thomas Hearns had a very good post-prime career that rarely gets talked about, it culminated in him winning the WBA Light-Heavyweight title against long reigning champion Virgil Hill. Starting out as a Welterweight, Hearns eventually moved all the way up to Cruiserweight and knocked several fighters out there. His snapping jab, lightning speed and devastating power never left him throughout the entirety of his career, these assets along with his excellent fundamentals helped him compete as a professional for nearly 30 years. One of the greatest fighters and biggest punchers P4P of all time! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Hello Hanzagod, I have a video request. Could you do a defensive highlight of David Tua defending punches out of the cross arm/philly shell position taught to him by Georgie Benton. Thanks
That footwork and the way he pulls the opponents into his punches is the stuff of legends. He wasn't just a big puncher, but also a masterful technican.
Even at cruiserweight, the very end of his career, the only fight he actually lost was against Uriah Grant, because of a knee injury, he was not even outboxed. From welterweight to cruiserweight it would be like someone fighting from Jaron Ennis to Jai Opetaia.
His movement on the outside is still amazing and there is so much force in his punches. Even though he got older and went up weight classes he’s still exciting to watch
Look at how he flows from left to right with the Hip movement, that's where all that power is generated from. Tommy extended completely on those shots.
Great video mate, I think some people only realised how good a boxer Hearns was when his power served him less well. All of my favorite Hearns preformances are later years Hearns. Fitting music.
Past his prime Hearns was a very smart glass cannon Couldn't really take it like he gave it anymore, but 10+ year veteran with dangerous skills, physical tools oh and Manny steward
Wicked vid; love the music. Used to live and die with Hearns fights 'cause you never knew if/when he'd get caught. Outjabbing Virgil Hill was no joke; people forget how dominant Hill was with his left. So many of these I was worried Tommy might not finish - Hill, Roldan, Kinchen - even Maynard had me spooked beforehand. Real edge-of-your-seat stuff back then.
@@decidingpaper6324 Literally one of the greatest lightheavies of all time. A HOF'er, a fantastic fighter and a "past his prime" Hearns beat him. EASILY one of the best wins of Hearns' entire career.
@@decidingpaper6324 That has to absolutely suck for Tiozzo. Damn near 50-0 against anyone he fought not named Virgil Hill. Beat Mike McCallum, Nate Miller and knocked out Dariusz. If he wins ONE of those fights against Hill, he MIGHT have a HOF shout as well.
One of the best bases while turning shots, in the history of the sport. A masterful puncher. Excellent at hitting at correct distance too. These things are very overlooked when looking at technique.
Hearns retired in 2006 (but really fought only 2 or 3 times after '99), but I'm not familiar with many of the guys he fought in the '90s....I guess it depends on what you consider his prime though. He had an IMPRESSIVE run from 1990 (post his infamous"draw" with Sugar Ray Leonard in '89) to 1992 (his second loss to Iran Barkley); he beat Olajide (solid operator who went from overrated to unknown?) and Hill for the WBA 175lbs belt (Hill an underrated LHW champion and close to his prime...if not in his prime!)...which is better than what many boxers achieve in their entire career!
Boxing fans these days don't understand us old folks when we say that Floyd and all these newcomers wouldn't stand a chance against the fighters we grew up watching. Tommy is proof of us being right. Even past his prime, The Cobra was still dangerous.
Actually one of the best right hand counter who ever lace them up alongside Schmeling, Arbachakov, Louis. I probably forget many. I think this is one of the skills that is the most evident when looking at this highlight
Hearns was great master! It is a real puncher: boxer, who can move using the lead hand and defence, but when he want, he can start pressure and hard combinations with devastating right hand
Thomas Hearns was a destroyer, literally. In his prime, very few fighters could top him. Ray Leonard was smart, and he had a really great corner who gave him a great strategy. Hagler was just built differently, but even Hagler wasn't the same fighter after his bout with Hearns. Hearn did a lot of damage to Hagler. No other fighter ever put that much hurt on Marvelous in his career.
Tommy Hears was one.Of the all time Greats in , Boxing he's beaten some of the.Best fighters in the, Division He was well ahead against.Sugar Ray -Leonard until he was knocked out in the 14th Round and many years later .The second fight was a, Controversial draw in my opinion, Hearns won the Second fight, he knock-Out Roberto Duran in Two Rounds, and a Three Round tare-up against.Marvin Hagler was knocked out, he also beat Wilfred Benintez, & Virgil Hill and Lost twice to.Iran Barkley, Hearns could box & punch for his.Height & Reach. Well long fighters don't ever fight inside most of the time excluding Floyd & Bowe I Guess, it's harder to do because your arms retract slower etc & I agree on the defensive side. His length was his defense too much, but he did have a solid slip & roll

Old Tommy couldn’t cut down to welter anymore (how did he ever) so he just decided to pick up titles till light heavy😭😭😭what a monster
A pound for pound legend!!
I love your montages of boxers past their primes.
It truly shows how awesome they were in their peak and gives them the amount of credit they deserve

Timely video. Hitman’s birthday was yesterday. Tommy schooled Ray 90% of the time they were in the ring together.
Thanks for this highlight. I always thought Hearns’ later career was pretty underrated.
Does anyone look better punching than Tommy? Beautiful combinations always..
He was underrated in his body snatching ability. His left hook to the body was destructive.

For him to end up beating Virgil Hill, as that former skinny, wiry welterweight, 30lbs south, is kinda ridiculous when you think about it.
