To be fair, that door had a pull handle on it. The subway designers need to learn proper door etiquette. Proper door etiquette: push doors have a flat push bar on them while pull doors have a handle, usually square shaped. This is a design convention used to make doors intuitive to use in public spaces.
Honestly it’d be even more funny if the truth wasn’t “it’s a push not a pull” so much as “It’s actually a pull, but Benny kicked it so hard it unlocked”
I absolutely love how the ghosts in the games aren’t just the same “please help us” stereotype giving vague clues and hints to the story instead of just telling the main character what happened and what to do. Instead, they’re just as confused as you are and follow you around harmlessly. It really helps make them feel real.
No way, it's that game that was published by that one team of developers that made Going Under and Another Crab's Treasure! And it's being talked about for 30 minutes, what a steal! Edit: Got a little correction that this team, Aggro Crab, published Subway Midnight for Bubby Darkstar(I think that's the handle), not made; Go check both of them out, they seem like pretty cool devs!
thanks for covering my game!!! i loved the video!! i really enjoyed hearing your interpretation of events and im so glad you seemed to really get a lot out of the weird junk that happens when developing it, i kept thinking that if it was just a weird narrative walk-around-y kind of game everyone would hate it, so it nEEDED some kind of gameplay. it turns out the real trial-and-error was deciding to add puzzles (the trial) and realizing that me and everyone else absolutely hates them and i SUCK at making them LOL (the error) thanks again for playing, and i hope youll enjoy my second, puzzle-free game when i actually get off my ass and finish the damn thing
I look forward to seeing what you're making next! You have a great style and atmosphere, even if the puzzles didn't quite hit, and that's important I think. After all you can learn to make puzzles, but a unique style is something far harder to come by organically.
Jacklin being Elanor's child actually adds to the narrative a bit. Elanor being so grief stricken that she thought that if she couldn't have her child then no one could. just a little something i thought of :]
in the puzzle to get Jessica's disc, it's not actually trial and error, at least not fully. given that your expected to do multiple playthroughs, you can see that the correct symbols for the puzzle is the same symbol on Jessica's shirt. if you dont want to brute force to the correct answer, your normally expected to use that knowledge for the second go-around
I actually really like the bad ending! The tension building as the menacing figure approaches, only to give some relief as it's revealed to not be some kind of monster, but a perfectly ordinary, friendly looking person, and then the horror resurfacing as she keeps approaching, because _she's still the one who killed all of those kids_ (and Benny) and she has you _cornered._ Then she lays a heavy hand on you head, there's a pause, then bam! Abrupt end. It's jarring, it's tense, it's pretty scary! Caught me off guard the first time I saw that. Leaving the murder up to the imagination I think is both the scariest way to do it (could you imagine seeing it in that artstyle? It's way too cute for it to work) and the most tasteful.
yeah i agree. i actually had this game wishlisted on steam since before it came out i believe, only to see the really mixed reviews from the less than stellar “puzzle” sections which made me skip picking it up. seeing the game play out, i think that was the right decision for me to make but i think the bad ending is really well executed for the artist’s style! gore isn’t necessary to make something uneasy or scary, and i think leaving it unclear makes it interesting because you want to assume the stalker is responsible for all of the missing people but also… could just be a coincidence? leaves it open for interpretation! (maybe everyone just gave themself a heart attack or ran headfirst into these dangerous carts out of fear of being stalked lol)
I feel like the bad ending is pretty scary, the implications that something horrible will happen are there. I guess it isn't as impactful as it could be though.
Fun fact: in Another Crab's Treasure, a souls-like made by Aggro Crab, the company who published this game (an amazing game BTW) includes a costume that references this game.
personally i really liked the bad ending! it communicated well that the stalker Caught You without showing all the gory details of whatever happened after you got caught. she gets her hands on you and it's over. there's no escaping at that point and i'm honestly really glad we didn't have to like, watch a (child?) murder play out in front of us though i may be biased as i'm not a fan of gore, in horror or in general
after watching a youtuber gameplay of it for a few minutes in a pc in my school i liked a lot, i could not hear the audio so when i was back in my house i wanted to look better the video but forgot the name and i did not find it again. thank you
wow I really like the art direction here! I'm a sucker for ghosts too so this is pretty sick (and the little bonk bit was delightful). Also I just really like the way you approach reviewing games like this, it highlights its strong points while fairly addressing its weaknesses, and I truly appreciate that. Nice video, as always, I look forward to whatever is next.
I would have to disagree about the bad ending being lackluster i won't say it's good but at least it's scary the entire game you have been facing supernatural things ghosts and monsters and at the very end the biggest threat so far turns out to be just a normal persons who even looks somewhat friendly yet its implied that this person murderd several children and who knows what else they possibly and now that very dangerous person is close enough to have thier hand on liz's shoulder with no way to escape which is a very terrifying position to be in the abrupt ending even adds to the horror in fact showing any conclusion would probably diminish the inherent horror in it For the other endings i have a theory that due to the supernatural nature of the events some time travel shenanigans occurs liz can't get the letter without reaching the bad ending meaning the letter went back in time and then the key is sent back to the very start and the ghosts possibly remember being helped between cycles which is why you don't need to repeat the ones already helped and in the good ending they all remember being helped in overcoming thier mental problems and so they helped thier savior and confronted the cause of thier death at the same time and when the mundane horror meats the supernatural one the result is well let's just say messy
Oh! Also the green ghost in the other sections are the Bennies, which are guest goers made by the cart to watch his shows! Benson (the ghost you give the bouquet to) can't leave i think
Seems like an example of great ideas executed not the best, but gosh there is something fascinating about this game nonetheless. Always great to see a video from you, Mr Again.

It’s completely underrated and SO MUCH with a BANGER OST. Thank you for making some of the best videos I now make routine to keep up with!! Have a great day!!
It’s sad that the gameplay has many shortcomings, cause there’s a lot of cool concepts on some levels. At least the art style is cool and the story is interesting. Also the art style, the idea of helping others, and the three endings reminds me of another game called “smile for me,” which is a game I love and would very much recommend it. Even if Ben doesn’t see this comment, I just recommend the game to anyone who does see it. Anyways, great video regardless.
I completely agree with everything you said, especially the 5 rooms for the soul with the dog. Each and every place in this videogame is marvellous to look at but a nightmare to navigate. I wouldn't replay it but I enjoyed the game
See, this is the perfect kinda game for theorists (like Game Theory, and the like). Personally, I think the events of the game are taking place canonically within A VIDEO GAME. If you think about the weird letter-carrying-over thing to reunite the twins (and the cutscene that results), it seems that there is a connection between video games and this universe being drawn here. The world itself turns into a low-poly video game, and the letter is straight-up obtained from the game the kid was playing. I think the key at the near-end of the good ending was carried over in Cassandra's "Inventory". Perhaps Liz dying is a fail point or "game over" for Cassandra's objective, leading the GAME to respawn at Cassandra's last checkpoint (being the start of her entire sequence), with the key carrying over the respawn. This isn't out of the question, because the letter was also carried over through the bad ending (LIZ's fail-point or "game over"). This caused Cassandra to have the key and the memory of what happened during the previous save/run, and be able to escape. Other than that, Liz did the same helping-all-the-spirits thing she did before in this run of the game as well, just not having to deal with Cassandra's body or the locked door, since she already opened the door and didn't die, meaning the spirits still received help from Liz, and decided to help her and Cassandra out in the good ending. As for the secret ending, while it gives more in-universe story/context to the stalker's motives, I feel it also helps support the "the universe is the game itself" theory. The skull-masked ghost only appears when the COMPUTER clock that the GAME is RUNNING ON is set to midnight. Perhaps he's only strong enough to sustain a visible form when it's midnight, because of ghostly things, but either way it shows another direct correlation between computers, computer games, and this universe. As for timeline stuff, it seems the murders happened all in one day, aside from the day Liz and Cassandra board (as there are missing signs up for the kids originally murdered). This means that Cassandra would've boarded first, then Liz in the same day. Cassandra would've been killed probably only a matter of minutes/hours before Liz showed up, making it possible for them to leave the subway together (Cassandra first, then Liz) in the good ending. Wow that was a mouthful.
honestly im suprised you hadnt done this video sooner but i guess not that many people know about it and its only really blown up cause of another crab's treasure nice vid though
Great review, really reflected how I felt playing through the game :] On my first playthrough I completely missed Julia because I died (I'm assuming to the ghost shark) as soon as I tried to talk to her, so I assumed talking to her was what killed me Also Colin's Game made me so motion sick I threw up. That has never happened before or since.
@@AeonKnigh432oh is that similar in any way to hotel dusk? I never heard of the game the original comment mentioned and didn’t know about hotel dusk until I watched Ben’s video on it and really liked it
despite the fact that i played the game its fun to watch other gameplay of it cus like. i didnt have any issues with a slippery floor except for in the yellow room which was less of an issue of sliding more of an issue of precision which is the challenge of the room in an of itself, i also didnt have any issues with the buttons not pressing or pressing the wrong button, the only issue i had was simply not knowing what to do to proceed, specifically for like the first time in the room before colins game where you have to turn off the colored tvs. also the red room which i couldnt get until i restarted the game and then just pressed left twice each section and it suddenly worked
also the orange room, its not breaking the established rules, if you look at the platforms closely youll see that the ones it says you can step on are drawn to be kind of 3d, while the ones youd die on are just flat squares, the two youre supposed to step on to get to the orange paint bucket are also 3d
Even though this wasn't maybe the best for you (agree with a lot of your critiques with it, had the same issues where I also had to put up a guide), still happy that you even did this game!!
I was wondering, since you cover horror games, if you ever heard of the South Korea game called White Day? By far, it always felt the spookiest game I ever laid eyes one (though playing it can be annoying because of the janitor). But the scares, the ghosts and the history of them, and the story - great stuff.
I actually remember avoiding this game, not for any reasons just because everytime I saw it I just wanted to watch a horror game, and every thumbnail I saw made me thing "ok this is probably not a horror game and probably really goofy" I was half-wrong as I see now.
I really want to watch this but one minute in I realize I love the style. Its in my backlog but am gonna start it tonight and then come back to this video after finishing it! Ttyd remake is going on the backburner! Edit: back after finishing and I will say I had less trouble with the accidental deaths, however that could be chalked up to the switch version being a bit tighter in controls. Either way the game gave me lots of great scares!
I understand the frustration with the puzzles, but I feel like 90% of puzzles require some sort of trial and error in order to solve them. Portal, for example, is filled to the brim with puzzles. The puzzles themselves require the logic of the game's mechanics in order to progress--however, the player still requires to mess around a bit in order to find the logical solution (trial and error). I feel like the need to mess around to find the solution is the equivalent to what a puzzle is.
The door at the end being a push instead of pull as revealed by Benny was hilarious ngl

Seems like there's intentional time shenanigans, since you keep the letter through playthroughs
Day 88 of reqeuting you to play Oneshot and your turn to die death game by majority.
I'm joining the bandwagon for Oneshot, it's definitely a must for Ben
I hate comments like this
YTTD would be so fire 👍👍
honestly im suprised you hadnt done this video sooner but i guess not that many people know about it and its only really blown up cause of another crab's treasure
nice vid though
Great review, really reflected how I felt playing through the game :] On my first playthrough I completely missed Julia because I died (I'm assuming to the ghost shark) as soon as I tried to talk to her, so I assumed talking to her was what killed me
Also Colin's Game made me so motion sick I threw up. That has never happened before or since.
Will you play the Last Window The Secret of Cape West pls 😢
Probably at some point, especially because the Hotel Dusk video performed (relatively) well, view-count wise
@@AeonKnigh432oh is that similar in any way to hotel dusk? I never heard of the game the original comment mentioned and didn’t know about hotel dusk until I watched Ben’s video on it and really liked it
@@peckneckanimations It's literally Hotel Dusk's sequel, released only in Japan and the UK.
@@windego999 god I look like an idiot now haha
But I hope he covers it bc the hotel dusk video has a special place in my heart
started this game a while ago, gonna go try and finish it blind before watching the rest of the video, but this looks great!
You should play cassette beasts.
I think you'd like 8:11 on itchio. Never really seen anyone talk about it
20:53 (Bad ending spoiler in the video)
NO WAY, SHENANIGANSEN?!
26:18 😨
Ghost trick OST in the background of commentary on a ghost game ok I see you
I think this game sounds neat!
yume nikki: ghost train edition

“Bonk heheheheh :) UAHSHGA” 3:12
Hey Ben! I know your probably on with a new project but I think you would love this game called “horns of fear” that I think you should try out!
despite the fact that i played the game its fun to watch other gameplay of it cus like. i didnt have any issues with a slippery floor except for in the yellow room which was less of an issue of sliding more of an issue of precision which is the challenge of the room in an of itself, i also didnt have any issues with the buttons not pressing or pressing the wrong button, the only issue i had was simply not knowing what to do to proceed, specifically for like the first time in the room before colins game where you have to turn off the colored tvs. also the red room which i couldnt get until i restarted the game and then just pressed left twice each section and it suddenly worked
also the orange room, its not breaking the established rules, if you look at the platforms closely youll see that the ones it says you can step on are drawn to be kind of 3d, while the ones youd die on are just flat squares, the two youre supposed to step on to get to the orange paint bucket are also 3d
YES
YES
YES BEN LETSGOOOOOO
Even though this wasn't maybe the best for you (agree with a lot of your critiques with it, had the same issues where I also had to put up a guide), still happy that you even did this game!!
16:55 am I the only person who thinks Benson looks like Charlie from batim?
I was wondering, since you cover horror games, if you ever heard of the South Korea game called White Day? By far, it always felt the spookiest game I ever laid eyes one (though playing it can be annoying because of the janitor). But the scares, the ghosts and the history of them, and the story - great stuff.
I actually remember avoiding this game, not for any reasons just because everytime I saw it I just wanted to watch a horror game, and every thumbnail I saw made me thing "ok this is probably not a horror game and probably really goofy" I was half-wrong as I see now.
19:20 you cant see thepath
Benson me frfr🗣🗣🔥🔥
Wdym this game Is almost 3 years old?!? where did time go?!?
I really want to watch this but one minute in I realize I love the style. Its in my backlog but am gonna start it tonight and then come back to this video after finishing it! Ttyd remake is going on the backburner!
Edit: back after finishing and I will say I had less trouble with the accidental deaths, however that could be chalked up to the switch version being a bit tighter in controls. Either way the game gave me lots of great scares!
*claimes to love it*
*mostly talks about negatives*
" I love a game with a distinct art style."
Pls play Hylics, pls play Hylics. 🙏
(Only if u feel like it)
I understand the frustration with the puzzles, but I feel like 90% of puzzles require some sort of trial and error in order to solve them.
WHERE WAS THIS VIDEO WHEN WE TRIED TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE ELEANOR MAKESHIP PLUSHIE 😫
3:13 moments before disaster 😂
14:04 this is cursed
