Totally agree with other comments here about building to hurricane standards. The demolished structures that were built at ground level to older codes were living on borrowed time. If you're gonna live this close to the water, you have 2 choices. Build higher and harder to Cat 5 hurricane standards ($$$) ... or build the cheapest thing you can and furnish it with the cheapest stuff there is and don't be surprised when it's all gone one day. People have to get real about where they're living with respect to the coast.
Agree 100%. Having grown up in Florida's west coast on the water in one of those 1950's concrete block homes , terrazzo floors, awning windows and tile roofs. What worked in 1958 no longer applies in 2024. That house that I grew up in was knocked down along with four other homes in order to build one massive 15,000sf house along with a 6,000sf guest house on a raised platform. That area of St. Petersburg did flood but from what I see, the new mega mansion did not. Those older homes had their limits in strength as the block walls were not reinforced but did have a poured lentil. Hard to say if the roof had hurricane clips. The real problem with that house was the low ceilings of the era and a rabbit warren of rooms, kitchen tucked out of the way which was popular in those days. In 1972 hurricane Agnes brought water out of Tampa Bay right up to the pool area and flooded the streets. Glad I live in the desert now. Would never want to live in Florida now. No more slab on grade homes in flood zones going forward. The insurance companies can see to that.
@@ChaosEarth-p8i Because they enjoy waterfront living. Without hurricanes, the ocean front is highly corrosive to buildings that require a lot of maintenance. Everyone rusts or corrodes and just rots away.
@@perryweeks9577 When I use the word "stilts" many presume that it is the old fashioned wooden phone pole type stilts. Those are there. I am referring to concrete piles driven deep into the sand 30 or more feet deep, pile caps on tops of the piles and then poured concrete columns erected on top just as they do for mid and high rise condos. Usually the pile caps are connected to each other with concrete bond beams that help hold the matrix together. This is a very robust design and has been used for many decades in this type of environment. Super expensive but works very well even in a category 5 storm with a massive storm surge. The ground floor is always designed as a garage, storage, utility and other sacrificial areas with non load bearing walls designed to break-away during the storm surge. That is how going forward the homes should be build. This will put the cost of the structure far out of the reach of the average homeowner.

These islands are fragile since a long time. The sea level rises, the beaches are eroded after every storm. But as someone who loves these islands, it's hard to watch. What will happen now? Those who lost their decades-old bungalows and can afford it, will build new, per code, elevated above base flood elevation +1 foot. Others will leave. What makes me sad is that the whole atmosphere on these islands will change and more and more 5 story mega-mansions will replace charming 'old Florida' bungalows. It's the same in Fort Myers Beach, Pass-a-Grille and many other places where homes from the 1950s survived mostly unscathed but now are ruined.
So true. The beaches will soon be for only the mega-rich. And the charm, the personality, the connections of generations who enjoyed those old beach cottages, is gone.😢
Prayers to you all. Hoping for speedy recovery. I'm looking for footage of the Sarasota County end of Manasota Key. Most of what I see is the south end of the key. Wondering how things look from around 7400 Manasota Key Rd up to the north bridge.
See how close these homes are to the water. Kudos for showing that. Note also they are at about 3-4' elevation. So when a storm SURGE comes ripping in that is 7-10' high, do the math. I live at 41' 1.5 miles from the gulf in Clearwater that took a near direct hit. Not so much as a shingle blown off. You folks considering moving to Florida need to realize that the storm of a century gave me zero damage. Now there is no way I would live on the beach including in condo. Many have ground level parking. Even a 7' storm surge puts your car in 4' of salt water. If your elevator dies and you are above the 4th floor, good luck going up and down to it.
Very wise, but remember that the old bungalows that were most affected were built by the grand parents of the current owners some 70 years ago. Nobody (re)builds like that these days, nobody is that crazy, plus it's not allowed.
These houses were never Hurricane Proof to be there. The Florida building code has to be upgraded !!! Houses has to be on concrete or metal stilts to avoid flooding,.The whole hurricane structure has to be done on concrete and reinforced CBS walls , Impact window and doors, The roof has to be primarily flat concrete roof and making the entire construction in one solid piece. Thta is a Hurricane Proof House.
Yes, cinderblock, concrete block, etc. Reinforced concrete block with columns and beams all the way around. That could be expensive but very strong to withstand hurricane winds.
Maybe mankind isn’t supposed to be there because these storms are going to be more frequent and increasing in their Category numbers. When you can feel a train coming/smell a train coming/hear a train coming - you need to get off the tracks..

what are homeowners thinking? Build a flimsy house a couple feet above sea level in a state constantly hit by big storms! If you like to gamble move to Vegas.
Most of these 'flimsy homes' have been built decades ago when the sea level was lower and the beaches were wider. Many people who lost their home now report that their grandparents had built it and that it was never flooded until Helene / Milton.
The definition of insanity is doing something that does not work or breaks, then doing the same thing over and over expecting better results. Well the people that build houses anywhere on the eastern seaboard or anywhere along the Gulf of have been and still are Insane. No house or business in any of these area’s belongs being built at any level below the high water mark of Twenty Five feet above Hight Tide Sea Level. That building code will save the vast majority of all this trash being left behind. Also all boats belong in either Man Made or natural Harbor tied up with single Line Cable Moorings. More dam boats bust loose from docks and bust down houses.
When you have cheap houses built so close to the beach, expect high tides or storms. In the current times we are living in, expect geo engineered storms.
