    I thought the fact about seeing Las Vegas on a clear day was super interesting. But if you google a horizon calculator, at 14,252ft the horizon is only 143 miles, and Las Vegas is about 200 miles away.

      Thanks man! Ya know, I haven't put much thought into the CO 14ers yet. 58 is a lot more than 15! But, definitely a possibility in the future. For the moment though, I'm rehabbing my knee to finish these bad boys here in CA =)

      You must have only hiked one. That is the lamest scenery. Can not come close to the eastern sierras

    For a well conditioned elevation acclimated slower hiker, I can probably do the entire 14 mile hike 8 hours. Maybe 9 hours.
    Start at 0500. End no later than 1500 barring any major issues.

    If you want a real challenge for White Mt. try climbing it off the valley floor. Turn right on White Mt.
    Ranch rd and follow to the end.
    Start climbing, bring plenty of water!

      It was a thought at one point, but I remember there was much less beta from that direction. I bet it is much more difficult with all that elevation gain!

    Is Campito (the wild solitary horse) still alive? Last time I went I did not see him? BTW, do NOT take any of the appealing side roads straight down to the Owens Valley or Deep Springs unless in strong a 4 WD convoy.. The shale is well known to shred tires. The cost to your VISA for assistance out of Bishop will cripple your credit card.

    We came up via Silver Canyon. My friend had a Toyota Tacoma and a key to the gate. We got up to a point that we were only going about 4 miles per hour with the gas pedal fully depressed. I chickened out when the road narrowed with a steep drop off and we found a flat spot to park. We walked up the last mile or so. Got some nice photos of the sheep at 13,200'. When you think about it, you are looking across and DOWN on the Sierra from White Mountain Peak. I don't remember if you can see as far south as Mt. Williamson.

      @@outerskirtshiking8141 It think it was the gas/O2 mixture with not enough O2. Just think, two of the highest 3 mountains in CA have buildings on top. My friend helps the CA DFW with sheep counts. These sheep are desert sheep and different than the bighorn sheep in the Sierra Nevada. The SNBS are listed as endangered and there are only about 500 of them spread along the Sierra Crest in small groups.

    1:08 Campito! Was there two days ago. Campito moves near the water through as the sun sets. We saw him from literally a few feet away from our car. He's an old horse up close; I don't think that he has many years left.

      Woah, sounds like he's been around a while. At the moment I just thought - cool, a random horse

    • @allanfifield8256
      @allanfifield8256 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@outerskirtshiking8141 Campito is no random horse; He's a legend! No one knows where he originally came from (although there are theories.) He disappears in the winter for months to no-one knows (although there are theories.) He could find other horses to be with, but is resolutely solitude. He does not seem to like other horses as he could find a wild band to join but does not. He may have associated with two other horses who appeared with him a long time ago and then the those two other horses disappeared. (It's unclear if this is really true.) My theory is that someone in the Owens Valley turned three horses loose because they could not afford to feed them. 2 died, 1 survived.

    Maybe you've already resolved this issue, but you and your cohorts should get more capable vehicles. Maybe not 4X4 or AWD ,but definitely higher ground clearance. Thanks for showing a fat old man a place he will never go , although we are planning a trip to the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in our little motorhome very soon. Happy Trails

      I agree, higher ground clearance is key on that road. Maybe some super meaty tires too for those rocks..
      I actually drive a 4wd SUV, but my buddy Hevi, he was just making things work with what he had :)

    I really like your videos, but you should know it's illegal to fly your drone in wilderness areas because it disturbs wildlife (and is not courteous to other hikers).

    • @outerskirtshiking8141
      @outerskirtshiking8141  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Matthew.
      Yes this is the only time I've used a drone on these trips. I wasn't too sure at the moment, and thought it could be fine since White Mountain Peak was all the way out there by itself. Also, we were the only people on the trail that day.
      Here's a cut from the Forest Service page:
      Recreational use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) is allowed on White Mountain National Forest lands as long as the landing of the drone does not occur within 1/4 miles of a Forest Protection Area, alpine zone, or area otherwise listed in Exhibit B of Forest Order R9-22-19-01.
      I don't remember seeing a no drone sign back then but, you're right - we should always be courteous to other hikers on the trail regardless. One of the reasons many of us go out there is for the solitude and to get away from the ruckus :)
      For sure they're not allowed at other, busier places though, like Mt Whitney - or just the Inyo National Forest in general.
