When you say ridiculous stuff like "Neil Peart was the worst lyricist", people won't realise you mean the opposite, even though only a lunatic could believe something like that. Also, you do realise that something can be good without having to compare with something else, right? YYZ or La Villa Strangiato alone, in my opinion and I'm sure plenty of other people's, are enough to qualify as proof of drumming brilliance.
@Chris Alan Woah friend, you forgot to add /s to that. Red Barchetta. Limelight. Losing It. Red Sector A. Afterimage. Entre Nous. Marathon. Manhattan Project. Time Stand Still. The Pass. Bravado. Ghost Rider. Far Cry. The Wreckers. The Garden. Headlong Flight. Fly by Night. Circumstances. The Spirit of Radio. Natural Science. I could go on all day - Neil's ability to create a genuine mood through words was astonishing. I will stand by all of these songs and more purely on lyrical strength (even though they have plenty of musical worth too). Also, Primus generally have okay to sometimes even great lyrics - I was just referencing the 'Primus sucks' slogan.
@Chris Alan Er, no. First of all, I'm most certainly not right-wing - there's a reason I glazed over a lot of Neil's Randite phase. And the song isn't particularly right-wing, any more than any other dystopian fiction. But the real reason I put it there was that it's probably his best story song. Every line builds the narrative or the excitement perfectly with the music. I would actually call this my favourite Rush song. Some things are easier to count in odd times than in 4/4. For example, if you're playing a pattern of 7 eighth notes, it's easier to keep track of things when "1" is called "1" as it would be in 7/8, instead of having it shift every measure like it would if you counted in 4/4. Compound/odd meters are just a tool to make things easier to think about.
I love the melodic sounds with the heavy undertones. Doesn’t really matter what genre to me as long as I can enjoy what the artist is doing. A great song is a great song 🤘

What I feel, truly makes a song "progressive", is it's composer's willingness to step outside the conventional norms. It could be the time signature, or layering different times on one another (King Crimson and Meshuggah are masters of this), using exotic chord voicings/scales, and even chord stacking are all tools we can draw from. I’m kind of new of a guitar player for about 3 years or 4 so far but I don’t play rock at all, I like to learn techniques and songs from Polyphia, and Ichika etc.
I’m a young guitar player, all other young guitarists I personally know seem to really dislike polyphia (including myself) our opinion was that we wanted to pick up guitar because we loved rock and metal and hated pop and rap not because we wanted to make music that sounds like them. We don’t need pop on guitar or a return to an old style of rock and metal that hasn’t been on the charts for 40 years, we need something new and loud that actually sounds different, we need the new alternative rock of the 90s when grunge came in with a new loud sound that still sounded different yet was also catchy (I’m not saying alternative rock needs to come back, I’m saying we need a new thing like it where it was new and sounded really different yet was still rock). I want something actually new.
@@leekthatsall4443 this is the kind of answer I was looking for, I find it really interesting. I’m 28 and I grew up with post grunge and nu metal, listening to the grunge/alt heritage. I was the singer/guitarist in a local post grunge band but never made it far and now I feel old thinking what kind of music does inspire new young people to pick up an instrument and play :D so thank you.
Oh man... Muting the low B all the time gets old. And, picking precisely takes more time... I switch between 6 and 7 strings every couple of songs with an intentional choice of key signature; per what guitar is next. The obvious starters: E major: 6 string. B minor: 7 string Low D: 7 string (Low B third fret) .... Key of A: back to the 6 shooter... It grew on me. If you play Seven Dust or Slipknot etc the 7 string is a way to avoid detuning ...
For me, it just depends on the tuning I'm in or the song. For example, I usually play any song by Carcass, At The Gates, or Soilwork on my 7 string because they already time to B standard on 6s.
What is you played is a genre of today though. What comes in the future will be very different ;) Your channel is the only guitar channel I still subscribe to by the way. Outstanding work!
Thanks for the info. The Prog Rock examples using more diatonic chords or passing chords almost sounds like Classical music, which makes sense if they're diatonic. On the surface most listeners would not consider those two styles of music remotely similar, but they are first cousins!
I enjoy your channel, and I'm even modifying one of my spare Fender necks to be 1/2 fretless, based on your PRS video (looks like fun!). However, progressive/technical/metal guitar playing is hopefully on its way out. I know it's still popular with a lot of millennials, but I'd still rather listen to David Gilmour, Stevie Ray, or any number of other really great guitarist play with feeling, than most of the semi-souless stuff I'm hearing these days. They sang with their fingers 🎸🎸🎸
Every genre is the genre of the future. Music evolves as styles and genres are cross-pollinated and conventions are dropped. Progressive metal is such an important genre because so many different bands incorporate so many different elements to create something perpetually new. It has always heralded creative freedom over constriction. We can apply this to all genres. We can add neo-soul playing to acoustic singer-songwriter stuff, and we can add linear jazz grooves and sprawling synth pads to folk. The next time you’re writing something, try to add something new that you’ve come across to the style you’ve already developed; you may end up doing something that has never been done before!
(Uh this is kinda a novel about how I went from absolutely no motivation to having nothing but motivation to want to play) I'm not a guitarist but. I decided I think in about February last year, after I had been playing my bass every once in awhile since I got it in 2018, what happened was I had just stopped really playing. I never really played with my amp because I would get anxious, I just decided one day after picking it up that I was gonna play every day for at least 2 hours. I have done that every day unless I couldn't. Then during the summer time I decided I wanted gear that would be better for me. So I spent all summer getting 4 new pieces of gear. And during that period of time I realized that while the chances of being able to play bass and make metal as a job are slim. I should at least try, because Maybe one day I'll learn how to actually write, get a band, tour and maybe be able to do something like this for my job. I know that it'll never happen but you never know. But I'm not stupid, I would never put my entire life and career on something that has a 99.999999% chance of failing. But I can hope, that just maybe I can.
This video makes me wonder if my songs are considered progressive symphonic rock because I do a lot of this stuff but with pads and electronic backing stuff
In my unasked for opinion, I would say the future of guitar music would be Neo-Soul and RNB.. of course, Blues power will never diminish but guitar has a great place in Soul and RNB music due to the guitar being a highly expressive instrument...

He legit just got ANOTHER PRS guitar...

Hes a prs artist
@@Slypooch yeah but he gets 1 every week
I just can't mesh with a 7 string. But respect others that can.
Oh man... Muting the low B all the time gets old.
And, picking precisely takes more time...
I switch between 6 and 7 strings every couple of songs with an intentional choice of key signature; per what guitar is next.
The obvious starters:
E major: 6 string.
B minor: 7 string
Low D: 7 string (Low B third fret)
Cool stuff Tyler...Really loved the ending shakes😂...brilliant🤘
$5000 guitar pedal just casually sitting over his right shoulder lol. Killer solo during the clean part at the end. Organic af!!
I wasn’t expecting this :0
Dude that totally rocked. Last 5 seconds was killer. :)
wow, great video and badass intro! Love that green prs
Grunge/post grunge. Seeing a lot of it with artists new albums and new artists all together. Let's hope.
I think there will be a genre that is a mix of pop and soft rock, with some eruption thrown somewhere in there for some additional awesomeness
That would be awesome to get Tosin on your channel!
Man that guitar tone is awesome.
Very nice performance section.
Lol you were really proud of that solo at the end huh 😂 great stuff as always, man
Hope you guys have a nice day!
Great playing, great lesson, and a great jacket! I miss my old one. Where'd you get yours?
Unbelievable guitar piece at the end of the video
The lead playing on this track was really really enjoyable.
What a great song. Great sound.
So glad you're giving this genre attention, love the almost "vocal" guitar melodies of polyphia
For sure that is my favorite solo I've seen from you! Amazing stuff man! 🤘🏻 solo tabs availiable anywhere?
I know this joke is old and all, but Lil Wayne is the future of guitar
Haha.
Well you are correct, the joke is old
Joke is so old that it has no future
Loved the beginning riff
I GOT IT RIGHT, 4/4!! YOU CANT TRICK ME WITH YOUR FLUID BAR TRANSITIONS
Great video would love to see a collaboration with Bernth you guys are the best on TH-cam
I have always admired Jim Matheos of Fate's Warning. Great player !!!
I really dont know whats coming, something nobody expects would be pretty cool.
My heart would love a reborn of the thrashy 80's as well.
not going to lie, that tone bro got me, one of the best metal tones ive ever heard
Sick jam, I loved every note!
That melody at the start, it had an unleash the archers vibe
This video makes me wonder if my songs are considered progressive symphonic rock because I do a lot of this stuff but with pads and electronic backing stuff
In my unasked for opinion, I would say the future of guitar music would be Neo-Soul and RNB.. of course, Blues power will never diminish but guitar has a great place in Soul and RNB music due to the guitar being a highly expressive instrument...
That's already here. Not the future.

This tone and playing style immediately gave me TheDooo vibes.
Wicked! Tyler how would you feel about sharing the backing track with us?
