Just to pre warn, for some reason there is a trend of people feeling the need to tell me I’m fat.. not sure why but you will be blocked from the channel for good. Not only is it irrelevant but it’s damn rude.
The Savage Garage really people are so bored to insult someone in that way yet they watch ya great content 🧐 I’m 36 and used to be 9 stone wet through all my life now I’m 11 stone it’s called a body maturing #hench. Keep the content coming buddy you are doing a brilliant job 👍
Mate you’re better than them trolls are everywhere take it as a sign of success you’ve got a fantastic channel god knows what they say about me when I start my channel keep up the great work and keep your chin up 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 and for the record I’m 21 stone so most people are skinny to me hahahahaha
I've been spraying professionally for a few years now and learnt most of what I've learnt from the gunman on TH-cam. If you have deep scratches like that, try a 180-240 grit on a block and then work up to 320- 400 and as your using rattle can 800 wet. Once primed, use a dry guide coat (available on eBay, I use mirka) and wet sand 800 with water, this will visibly show you any imperfections including sanding scratches. You might not see or feel the scratches but there definitely there. If the surface was rough on plastics I would go 240, 320, prime, dry guide coat 400 with block and finish 800 wet but I use 2k for everything. Because you jump from hose hold sandpaper 120? then 800 your leaving deep scratches still in there. It might look good for a while( 1 month)then the paint shrinks into the sanding scratches and looks rubbish. I think that's what's happened to last job to the point its cracked the paint. 2k paints have a thicker build and if it had occurred on 2k it would leave sanding scratches once cured but not cracked paint. Bodyshops as mentioned would use a sealer, this acts as a barrier from old paint and helps to fill sanding scratches. if it was a paint reaction it would normally happen during the painting process not after. I'm more than happy to give you any advice james on paint if and when you need it.
i watch the gunman aswell great teacher i hate painting im currenlty doing my kia sedona its clear silver metalic nightmare colour to paint things look great then it just starts going patchy im now in the process of rebuilding a air compressor to try painting with a gun hopfully will get better results yeah the gunman is great shows you every trick ect
If you are going to wet sand, why not just use water. When you use the detail spray you are introducing chemicals that you don’t know how they will react to the paint?. Came out great, keep up the good videos!!
Definitely this, just water, maybe a tiny dab of washing up liquid to break surface tension. Wash with plenty of water then wipe with the panel wipe we saw. Otherwise the detail spray may contain salts or hydrocarbons that don't evaporate naturally and will "hide" in tiny scratches and eventually attack the paint. Just dust a primer coat on really really thinly to make a key, then a thicker primer coat, and then sand it back even if you think it is okay.
It's awesome to see the Astra again... such a beautiful car! Huge shout-out to you James for still uploading for our entertainment during this rough times. Anyways happy Easter to all of you and your families ❤️, stay strong and stay healthy.
I really love your Astra James, I know to most people it’s just an old Vauxhall but I love the shape of the mk4’s if you decide to sell it, I would be interested mate! Great video as always!
Another quality video mate! Until I started watching your channel a few years back I'd never even serviced a car and now I'm always out there doing jobs so thank you for the inspiration 🙌☺️
Sprayer by trade here to give my 10p. It almost looks like they are previous prep marks that have gone too deep. Painting non metal parts always has a higher chance of reacting as some materials can be porous and make certain paints and lacquers sink and go flat over time. Its always best to use a pre primer 'e' coat it adds as a sealing layer to block any old contamination and grease ready for you to start a fresh layer. Hope this helps a few folk!
I picked up a can sprayer gun just like that from Halfords a few years ago, it made a huge difference to the entire experience of spraying with rattle cans.
James great content as always. I wish I’d viewed this before spending my Sunday spraying my golf front grill turned out like a dogs breakfast. Wet sanding my heart out this afternoon. Also ignore these people who are probably sitting at their computer munching 30 Mars bars. Get a life this young man is a solid performer for us and TH-cam with excellent content. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏴
Yep the primer reacted with the original paint. I had similar reaction when using spray filling primer that cracked. I use very thin coats and leave for 10 minutes to go tacky before adding another coat. Don't sand silver or metallic paint as it will go cloudy. Spray in doors and leave to dry before applying lacquer. Did you use a plastic primer on the lacquer? Sand down to the paint. Excellent video as always.
That actually turned out pretty great. Is hard to get a good finish without like a a proper gun and a paint booth. For doing it in your garden with some cans I think that's as good as it gets and it's more than fine if you ask me.
Takes me back to my youth(early 80's) when the whole colour coding craziness came along. My mk 5 cortina got the full works, spoiler, wheel trims, bumper plastics,Hella fogs in a painted grill.mirror backs and door mouldings We didn't understand the need for a flexible undercoat and just rattle caned it. Turned out to be an almost monthly thing, until I sold it to get a " grown up " rover sd1
Good job mate. Paint has got to be one of the more trickier things to get right so very impresive results considering the set up. You are one of the people on YT who really gave me the push to get cracking with my project. Love what you're doing with the mondeo. Would love to see you work on some old school fords one day. Keep up the good work!
Tip: after applying primer coat, sand a little bit the primer with 800 grip, but just to give a smooth "face" to primer don't go deep to the last paint. And then just wipe with a clean towel, no water no chimecals, dry clean towel. And enjoy painting. - it helps with economy of paint. - helps with cleaner base coat and clear coat. You done such a beautifull job. Keep going. Love your vids!
Hi mate nice to see you back its been a while, also glad to see that lock down is not only affecting me lol its got to you too, poor old food cupboards are suffering, keep up the good work..........my wife is a NHS nurse she looks forward to a 8pm Thursday when she is not working (on a covid 19 ward)
Alright. Please could you do the cruise control upgrade to your astra. I'm very keen to do it to mine. Also maybe the trip computer upgrade but I think that one is harder
Just a tip with sanding you want to ideally go up in grits gradually so 40 - 120 - 240 - 320. 320 is good for primer to stick. Wet sand the primer with 600 then apply base let it cure then apply clear. If needed wet sand the clear with 1500 - 3000 - 5000, compound then polish
Great video mate thanks for the lockdown content very selfless of you to go out of your way to film and produce this, stay safe and looking forward to more! Been here since the Corsa 1.8 swap lol
I always wet sand with detergent then prime anything that’s not metal with plastic primer.t-cut is ok to use before paint or white spirit in my experience!
Great video mate. Honestly don't let people like that get you down. Their just not happy with themselves so they feel the need to be horrible to other people. Keep up the good videos mate, you'll be the one to come out on top in the end 💪
Hi bud, the old blue paint can be covered to prevent that type of reaction happening with a body shop sealer. Great work. I’m going to try the products you used when I’m next spraying bits for my car. 2K stuff is generally better.
Good video James, I really enjoy your step by step approach, and your honesty with trying certain ways to tackle your jobs. You work in real time and reality, if you do not get right, or you are not happy with what you see, you have another go at it. This is called life. Best wishes from Montreal, Canada.
Nice job James , as you say you learn along the way , but at least you give it your best , and you are to be congratulated for that . Don't listen to critics who bad mouth , always look forward to your content , keep em coming , Chris
Well at least something interesting to watch during this lockdown. You are one of the few youtubers I am subscribed to that when I get a notification I know it will be an interesting video. No matter what it is about
Hey bud I love watching your videos even if they dont relate to the cars I have and your tutorials are always in depth of what needs to be done, could you help me out on a video I cant find on your channel. I know this isn't a question for this video but do you have a video or know of a good video to adjust the break cable on the rear drums for a mk4 04 plate astra please?
Hey mate, i want to fit that spoiler on my regular astra g, but i dont know which exactly bolts are that to buy them and fix it, please answer me, i just ordered spoiler :)
To be honest, I`m the same with painting. It never seems to come out as expected. I tried to paint a spoiler for my Mondeo, so far it`s taken about 6 cans of paint. Unfortunately I can`t do anything at the moment with it as it`s at my son`s work. They are on shut down so there it sits. We ( my son and I ) could have had another go at it during the warm weather. Nice job though on the Astra. Keep safe and keep the videos coming.
Good to see another upload James, keep up the good work. When we are all out of isolation we should have a Savage Garage meet. Ignore the haters dude, it actually looks like you’ve been putting in the gym time and getting hench 👍
I swear by Wurth cleatcoat. Its not 2k but its petrol proof and non yellowing. Put the can in some very warm water and it will be touch dry seconds after you spray it. You can go nuts and put really nice thick coats on without running.
Priming may not be required if the paint you buy for painting plastic is designed to work without one, but it doesn't hurt to have the smooth foundation. You definitely need a primer designed specifically for plastic if you're using regular spray paint. ... Let the primer dry completely before moving on to the paint
Wish I could take my spoiler off to repaint it... that thing has been tiger sealed on so it will outlive the car. Nice video mate every few months I see you again in my recommendations, I remember project SXI days lol
One tip I got for you James is to when painting always do as longest moves as possible. You always use a lot of just quick sprays and its not good. You should always try to spray the longest way possible and start spraying before you reach the thing you paint.. Like Don´t start spraying when you´re above the thing.. It´s hard to explain but the main thing is LONG SPRAY MOVES. It will create nice and even layer. Cheers mate
I have a similar issue with paint cracking on my 5 door mk4, is your gsi spoiler made of abs plastic or is it fiberglass? I ask as with my fiberglass one its caused by the material expanding and contracting with the heat
Great result James, it looks amazing, especially considering that you did this without the benefit of a sterile spray booth and professional equipment, you’ve made it look a thousand times better!!.
Currently rubbing down vectra alloys for my van and was thinking earlier, that al need to get some savage garage on for painting pointers. And then......... BANG!!!! Painting video uploaded 🖖🙂👍
Next time I’d probably try a bit of etch or high build primer. Good few coats. Wet sand. Few more coats and wet sand again. Usually gets most imperfections out. Also just use water when wet sanding as most quick detailers will have some sort of hydrophobic properties which can react with the primer and/or paint if not completely degreased. Well done though looks loads better now
I’m not expert James and I do agree it seems like the primer reacted but I was also wondering if there is any chance of aero friction helping in doing that 👍
As for painting from a can, unfortunately the work will disappear after 2 years ... but you can always ask the painting company to buy colorless cans with a hardener (they are more vital) and to choose the right base ... for sandpaper gradation you start at 120 and always finish 800 wet .. on such a piece as much as it is taking time for the element at friction is about an hour for gradation .. as for the painting on the air, the trick is to paint up (it was on the table) and in another place than it was lapped in .. you must always cover the painted element if you paint outdoors or create some makeshift protection because it will be a waste of time later (here I mean cardboard or some container ... you can combine art is free) but the work went well as well for such conditions, best regards
Nothing to do with the car but is that artificial grass? Really want that in my garden but its so bumpy would need digging out loads levelling to get it slot on. Astra looks great I had mk4 coupe one of my favourite cars I had.
Mate, honestly we all love the content you create. Mad respect, I've gained so much confidence working on my car as a result of your videos. Out of all of the well known UK car TH-camr's out there the thing I like about your channel the most is that you do the job properly (I don't mean for that to sound disrespectful to the other TH-camr's). p.s I've gained 14l.b in weight since we have been in lockdown 🤣 nothing else to do other than eat, drink and watch TH-cam 🤣🤣🤣
Hiya. Is that lacquer a 1k lacquer just advertised as giving a 2k quality finish? Or did you have to release a hardener into the can like the proxl 2k aerosols. Advert on ebay says its pre catalysed but surely that cant mean its already got the hardener mixed in with the lacquer because it would just harden up in the can lol
I would just use water as a lubricant , if there was any silicone in chemicals you use , the paint will react. I don’t think there is any reason to use anything other than water , and it’s in the tap 😀
I don’t know why it didn’t come to me it’s called adhesion premotor it just to help the primer or under stick I believe that you can use it under the base coat as well there must be a professional that’s watching these comments and laughing at me trying to explain as you can see I’m not an expert at all
I had this happen too. It looked great for months, then just started deteriorating like this. It was a brand new, bare spoiler. Hopefully someone will have an answer.
trigger on base coat you didn't use after primer saying will use again .tip run full lenth of job when spraying not your 10" back and fourth thats why paint not even. make sure continuous one end to other tno more short back and fourth spraying 2 wet sanding water only prob detail spray didnt help as detial sprays have waxes in them
Chris fix made a video that shows how to get a good finish on your paint. It shows all the levels of sand paper for wet sanding and how to blend the paint
It's great you painted it then because in Lowestoft its training now. Back to the paint rub it down with a scotch rite pad then wipe clean then plastic primer then the colour hope this helps all the best mate
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. Cheeky sneak peek of your new car in the Instagram live 😏. You're such an amazing genuine guy and I love it how you do everything yourself and you're not in it for the money!
Similar thing happened to me when painting my wing mirror covers. Used a different brand of basecoat to the primer I had used and it reacted like this. Keep up the good work!
95% of painting, is in the prep work. The more time you put into that, the better the outcome. Yes, if you're painting outside you are going to get little pits in your paint, nothing you can do, apart from spray in a booth or at least dedicated clean space. For what its worth, the results you get from doing it outside, are still far better than some "Proffesionals" you see.
Just to pre warn, for some reason there is a trend of people feeling the need to tell me I’m fat.. not sure why but you will be blocked from the channel for good. Not only is it irrelevant but it’s damn rude.

Anyways happy Easter to all of you and your families ❤️, stay strong and stay healthy.
Had this paint issue on a door handle I painted. Apparently it was the gases escaping from the base coat that caused the cracking/crazing 🤔
I really love your Astra James, I know to most people it’s just an old Vauxhall but I love the shape of the mk4’s if you decide to sell it, I would be interested mate! Great video as always!

I almost forgot... I made my cover from the 60 inch TV box .. I just had to increase it in terms of packaging (additional cartons plus painting tape)
Nothing to do with the car but is that artificial grass? Really want that in my garden but its so bumpy would need digging out loads levelling to get it slot on. Astra looks great I had mk4 coupe one of my favourite cars I had.
chris else yep did it all myself levelled the group and put sand down, flattened that, weed fabric then the grass 😬
Small tip would be to warm up cans when shaking them up before you spray.
There’s a spray that you put on plastic I can’t remember what it is called but it’s to promote adhesion might have been some help
mark powell plasticoat
No adhesion promoter is what he's talking about
I don’t know why it didn’t come to me it’s called adhesion premotor it just to help the primer or under stick I believe that you can use it under the base coat as well there must be a professional that’s watching these comments and laughing at me trying to explain as you can see I’m not an expert at all
Plastic primer.. Simple as that!
I had this happen too. It looked great for months, then just started deteriorating like this. It was a brand new, bare spoiler. Hopefully someone will have an answer.
Rob Lubelski that’s happened to once, it was plastic primer too thick and not allowing 24 hours between painting on the primer
Wonder if was cheap paint when u painted it ?? It’s like the paint has shrunk
I really fancy 1 of these astras. used to have an estate 1.6. Drank fuel but I'd take it again in a heart beat
trigger on base coat you didn't use after primer saying will use again .tip run full lenth of job when spraying not your 10" back and fourth thats why paint not even. make sure continuous one end to other tno more short back and fourth spraying 2 wet sanding water only prob detail spray didnt help as detial sprays have waxes in them
Great work mate, love your videos. can i ask why you’re selling the astra?
Thanks for another vid..appreciated during the 'lockdown'.... 🚗🚗🚗🚗
I’m not a professional but did you use plastic primer think there is more flex or give in it if that makes sense 😂🤣
Nice job James, the spoiler looks new again
Just started watching and gotta say, I love your videos mate!
Chris fix made a video that shows how to get a good finish on your paint. It shows all the levels of sand paper for wet sanding and how to blend the paint
i may be interested in buying the astra if the price is right, ive requested to follow you on instagram a week ago but nothing so im commenting here
Still to this day, one of the best looking cars on the road.
Is it still lookin good after few months?
keep up good videos.
It's great you painted it then because in Lowestoft its training now. Back to the paint rub it down with a scotch rite pad then wipe clean then plastic primer then the colour hope this helps all the best mate
By the looks of it you haven’t used a plastic adhesion promoter.
Does the detail spray contain a wax? You’d need to remove that before spraying, silicon really messes up spray paint.
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. Cheeky sneak peek of your new car in the Instagram live 😏. You're such an amazing genuine guy and I love it how you do everything yourself and you're not in it for the money!
Great video as usual , loving the humour... any news on the welding or have you abandoned it?
Similar thing happened to me when painting my wing mirror covers. Used a different brand of basecoat to the primer I had used and it reacted like this. Keep up the good work!
95% of painting, is in the prep work. The more time you put into that, the better the outcome. Yes, if you're painting outside you are going to get little pits in your paint, nothing you can do, apart from spray in a booth or at least dedicated clean space. For what its worth, the results you get from doing it outside, are still far better than some "Proffesionals" you see.
Good video, I had a standard Astra g from 2004 to 2010 very nice car for what I paid for it, great honest video
