And the fact that she did it for 500 years, including her never ending run from an immortal hybrid without anyone to have her back & support her only solidifies her strength of character. And she did all this without turning her humanity off. She was doing what everyone would do, if the situation demands. If Elena had no one to look after her, she also would have turned just like her had the circumstances been similar.

Elena is a person who literally turned off her humanity only bcz Jeremy died while on the other hand Katherine's whole family were killed and still managed to live with it....
