Haydn is the father of the symphony. His music is amazing in harmony, grace and elegance. Viva Haydn a true genius of music that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure and haunting music. Bravissimo

A festive symphony, containing one of "Papa Haydn"'s most delicious adagios.

Let’s bin the silly ‘Papà’ bit for good; its current usage derives from its early 19th century usage as a patronising, derogatory and misleading caricature of the historical man, bearing no relevant relation to the musical composer.

@MrFiddler66 (1760 ca) A shrill opening fanfare, which can be considered the first theme, is followed by a second theme exposed "piano" in the dominant of a more melodic character. These two contiguous sentences constitute the "first subject", which is then contrasted at a certain distance by a regular second subject in the minor dominant. It is therefore a movement in sonata form with three themes, of a not new type (see symphony n.4). third theme that is enunciated in imitation, no longer appearing in the reprise.

That's odd, the menuet is second instead of third.

Not too rare. A more famous, but later example would be Beethoven's 9th symphony. The scherzo comes after the first movement.

Pretty, but overall repetitive and uneventful

It’s better than that, and neither would I describe anything by Haydn as ‘pretty’.
The main point however, is that in terms of the history and development of the symphony, and Haydn’s own growth as a composer, this work is little more than a foetus.
Symphony 32 is numerically misplaced, it was written before 1761 - his Eszterhaza appointment - and is therefore a very early work; there is some relatively advanced work in the first movement development.
In short: you’re right to a degree, but need to be aware of the context.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 To my taste, considering the early date of the symphony, the slow movement is also a rather big step forward in Haydn's symphonic evolution.

You’re quite right; even though I originally explained that this symphony was a very early work, there is in fact almost nothing in Haydn that can be labelled immature.
Almost everything extant by Haydn is highly competent, professionally composed, and in the case of the symphonies, very original, inventive, and usually some way in advance of every other contemporary composer.

If this bores you, Haydn would probably be bored with your opinion.
