True Life: Deaf Kids Shining Bright in High School

- This is a documentary highlighting 4 deaf students and their transition to a Mainstream High School setting in Western Massachusetts. This was created by the students and their Teacher of the Deaf using iMovie, and the goal was to educate their hearing peers and faculty on best communication practices, information on the technology that helps them hear, and most importantly, to prove that they are just like everybody else.

This was wonderful. I am a hearing person, but my baby brother has Down's Syndrome, and we used ASL for a long time to communicate with him. I absolutely loved it, and I have been steadily trying to learn as much as I can about ASL and Deaf culture. I don't personally know anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing, however, so it's taking a while. You guys rock! Keep educating us hearing folk! ;)
HAHA can totally relate to teachers not turning it off when leaving the classroom. I once heard my teacher trashtalking us students with another teacher because she forgot to turn it off.. lol
Haha! I heard mine in the bathroom. LOL
Fi X , my teacher forgot to give me back my FM when the bell rang. I heard a toilet flushing and figured out where she and it was. Somewhat needless to say, it was mutually uncomfortable when she came out of the restroom with me waiting.
Hi my name is Ashley wolf I was born deaf but my whole family didn't know I was deaf when I was 7 years old because my doctor didn't tell them. I know it's sound crazy and werid.. I tried to wear hearing aid since I was 7 but... To be honest it's not working for me I got a cochlear implant when I was in 8 years old. I have a cochlear implant called freedom it's pink and blue on the top and gray magnet and honestly I love to use my ci a lots because it's help me to hear and talk better plus I learned asl when I was in 8th grade and took asl class in high school, I love using asl. Using asl,cochlear implant and use my voice is amazing. I love it. I love to be in hearing and deaf world!

I feel so bad, not because I'm a hearing person, but that so many hearing people are ignorant on what it means to be deaf and to communicate with a deaf person. I wish it was different. So many hearing people are oblivious to deaf people and don't consider their needs or desires to make life go as smoothly as possible. It's like a left-handed person in a right-handed person's world (however bad that analogy may be!). Videos like this are really helpful because it teaches hearing people that communication doesn't have to be a barrier between making friends and meeting new people. Thank you so much for the video. Also l'm 16 and I wish I had friends as nice and funny as these kids!

I’m deaf in both ears and wear hearing aids and I’m eleven I struggle really bad at school and I just feel trap because no one understands how hard it is other than other deaf kids and it’s nice for me to see someone who understands you made my day thank you
This is a great video. Thank you for sharing it w/ us. It's really great to see these kids put themselves out there by entering a high school that includes hearing students, and it's just as nice to see that they're fully accepted by their peers.
OMG! This was awesome! Thank you for showing that being deaf or having a hearing loss does not take away from your humanity. I love the fact that you called Mareo out on wanting to be an animal "breeda." I almost fell off my chair laughing. Too many people want to tip-toe around anyone with a disability. We each need to be dealt with in a specific ways and it is no different with these wonderful young ladies and gentlemen. I love that fact that they are not asking for special treatment, just an understanding that you might have to repeat yourself, to look directly at them, and speak clearly. I applaud you all for taking the time to do this so that your classmates will understand how to communicate with you proficiently. Thank you for making and sharing this. You guys rock! Keep it up and I hope your journey into adulthood is full of adventure!

This is such a wonderfully warm video. I've had a hearing loss my whole life, and while it was not profound, there was still a lot that I missed,both in class and socially. I am so happy today not only with my CI but with all the assistive devices which are available in school, in the theater and at the movies. Thanks for doing such a good job on this.

I'm glad you're doing this. It is a good way for hearing people to learn about deaf/hearing students a little better and why they mainstreamed through hearing high school.

Just saw the doccumentary to make a presentation about hearing impairment, I'm studying to be an ESL teacher so this was awesome... glad to hear these kids are graduated. Just wanted to say that I loved this video. I am not deaf I am hearing but I love the deaf community and I want to be an interpreter when I grow up. I can't wait to work with amazing kids like all four of them.
These kids should still learn sign language. To be an integral part of the deaf community.
you don't need sign language to be part of the deaf community, a lot of deaf people don't know it. all you need is to understand them.
***** I think it is a beautiful language and I try to learn every language I can because when you speak to people in their native language you speak to their heart. I don't know how you can truly communicate with someone who is deaf and signs without knowing how to sign yourself. To me it shows respect and brotherhood.
TheHG12 that's a great thought and sounds awesome. you can speak to deaf without sign language if you are willing to try, you will find deaf people are very smart and patient and have be finding ways to communicate their whole lives so they will know how best to communicate to someone who doesn't know sign like maybe writing on paper or mobile phone.

Love it! I have a deaf cousin and many deaf friends... I am so proud to be able to communicate with ASL, but I also fully support the use of cochlear implants by all those who want to hear. Having said that, these kids and their teachers are so awesome. 😄

I like the fact these kids welcomed by the school the way there were. I my case, it was the opposite. When mainstreaming began, there were maybe 4-6 places in the US that offered it (this was the middle 70's). When I lived in Louisiana, the kids were not nice, even adults too. The bullying was so severe after 2 years , that the family moved. The next three places, i was the only hard of hearing/deaf in the entire 3 schools. After family left Louisiana, things became considerably better but the damage was done. Everybody spoke really well, with a couple, you can hear the common speech impairment that is prevalent
among the deaf and hard of hearing. I hope all 4 will have better resources than i did...you all will be just fine.
I wish these young people nothing but the very best for them in their future.
This video is so inspiring. I am hard-of-hearing and getting a cochlear implant on the 29th. Some people don't seem to realize that people who don't hear as well are not different. They're like everyone else, and capable of doing things like everyone else. They can be anyone they desire to be.

This was really nice to watch. I am hard of hearing and have been in mainstream schools all my life because my mother is hearing. It would have been cool to have the connection those four do, i was always the outcast. Just wanted to say i hope they pursue their dreams especially mikaila

I LOVE the children. I think they have a positive message. In addition, there are several aspects that translate to the hard of hearing population.
My daughter is a deaf adult. She had a cochlear implant at 6 , but identifies with the Deaf community and chose not to use the implant at 14. Many who call themselves HOH are actually deaf. We have always used total communication in the household and continue to do so. It is about respect for the wishes of the Deaf person. There is deaf and there is Deaf.

I am hearing person with four languages including ASL, and i would like to say that i hope in your life the good will always outway the bad.
I am going to college in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Union County which is the only school that teaches sign language Deaf studies/Eng interpreting, i am majoring in ASL English interpreting, even right now i am a Spanish interpreter. One thing i always have to correct hearing people most of the time is when they say " disable" it boils my blood because Deaf people are not disable, and this video proves that the Deaf community are capable just like we are. my passion for foreign languages and the barrier of communication between spanish speaking community has inspire me to be an professional interpreter. When i came into this country i could hear everything but if i did not understood the language what was the point of hearing? to me is feels the same now i am learning ASL i can hear you just as well.

I consider myself deaf without my hearing aids but I"m really just HOH because if things are loud enough i can hear things without my HA's. I like having my Streamer because it connect throught bluetooth and so it connects my HA's and iphone together so I can listen to music but the streamer is like an FM and blocks out background noise so I don't hear anything but the music. It annoys people around me if they see I'm wearing the streamer but don't know if it's turned on or not. like right now i don't have my HA's in and have to keep adjusting the volume on this video because it keeps changing volume.

you guys are awesome and i am learning sign launge right now and my cousin is deaf too I love u guys and an u guys do a signing video too.
My nine year old son has been bilaterally implanted since he was 4 (1st implant at year 3). He is transitioning to main stream elementary next year. I think this video was a confidence builder for him. He's excited to mainstream but I know he's worried about the unknown and assimilation. We recently had his IEP where we were discussing the transition and the FM system. Thanks for the video. There needs to be more of this stuff.

I really like this project. I am a Itinerant teacher of the D/HH in Florida. I am always looking for new ways to document and encourage my students to show their teachers/parents what they know about themselves, using the FM's, and self advocating with peers. I wonder what curriculum you use? How are the students doing now that they have been mainstreamed for a few years? What are their continual challenges?
Keep up the great work! I plan on showing some of my older students this video. It will be interesting their reactions.
I'm 9 year old i could it hear when i was born i feel happy when i see someone wereing them like me were i live people tell me why you have that on your ear they make fun of me were i live people don't have that on there ear i feel very sad I'm crying what I'm putting 😔😞😥😪😢

Ohhh I'm LOVING this video! I wear bilateral (meaning 2) Over the Ear (OTE) hearing aids and I've been mainstreamed my whole life, but I was always the only one in the school, that was deaf. The biggest thing that I LOVE about this video, and yet hearing people don't understand, is that we "the deaf people" can have fun with our own inability to hear. I tend to brag that I have one of the rarest genetic disorders in the world "Brocio Ocio Facial Syndrome." Yes I said "BRAG" I mean come on, I still can't say I was the first baby to fail the hearing screening at the hospital but I have to imagine the look on the Audiologists face. ROFL Priceless! "Of course I'll give you my phone number, just ... don't bother trying to call me, I won't be able to hear you." Oh and my favorite, you should have taken part of the video during the Fire drill, OH I LOVE WATCHING THE HEARING KIDS SUFFER! BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Yeah I know, I'm a evil deaf kid like that, but what can I say? There are times when I love being deaf, just as much as hearing. XD
Oh and I almost forgot, when I was in kindergarten I had trouble spelling... well I still do but that's not the point. I went to my teacher and asked, "How are you supposed to be able to spell?" My teacher replied, "Just spell the words like they sound." ... ... ... YOU SAID THAT TO A DEAF KID!!!!!! ROFL XD
I had a friend who had an FM in school, our teacher used it and I was the only student who was allowed to use it.
I also used the FM in school my last year of HS since I found out I have APD I can hear but I can't always make out what is said so I also use hearing aids to hear clearer
Great video! It was great to see that they're speaking and I see they aren't sign language. I'm deaf too. I wore hearing aid and cochlear. I don't do Auslan because I prefer to hear and speak. It is not about losing our identity. It's who we are and how we actual sound like. Some speak really perfect but some do not as they have not speak clearly (if they have to correct their speech by themselves) if they got family member who take their free time to teach them how to speak for instance; syllable, correction, use voice box instead of speaking through their nasal. Everyone are different from one another so sign language or not, nobody force us to wore hearing aid or do Auslan. We do as we can to feel comfortable. Sometimes, as a young child, cochlear should wait until a child is free to choose whether to stay deaf or get cochlear. Obviously, parents robbed child's choice and life for getting it without a permission. Sometimes, all do feel insecure about wearing hearing aid and cochlear. Sometimes, all chose not to wear it at all. We all are pretty good at masking our true feeling about being Deaf. We all wish we weren't deaf to start with, but we come a long way to accept our deafness and accept who we are. We are just normal people with hearing loss.

One day soon I'll have to have to have a hearing aide because I've had about 4 surgeries for both of my ears and my right ear is far worse than my left and this makes it very hard for me to sing, which ive been in choir for a long time

When they graduate from high school, they may eventually choose to use sign language. I was in their shoes before-attending regular schools all my life, then I discovered Gallaudet University. I am so thankful that I can sign. Too tiring at my age to lip read all day. I work with the Deafblind, use sign language interpreters and everyone who associates with me can sign. It's a better place for me!

Andrea:It is great to see kids having fun talking about their hearing loss and aids or implants. That has never been a fun topic for me because hearing people don't understand.
Sarabeth: What a great video. What happy kids and I love that they are open about their hearing aids, the fm systems and all of it. They will be well adjusted adults. We have a wonderful Deaf/HOH teacher that comes to our school twice a week. I know she checks on my son in kindergarten(borderline hearing loss at this point). I know she really tries to teach the kids especially the older ones, be proud of who you are. Great words that I need to hear also. Don't be so proud you can't ask for assistance or just to point out I am HOH. I have trouble with that part. Bravo to these kids.
I also posted this on my FB page: These kids are from the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech in Massachusetts. There are five such schools up and down the East Coast and we have one here in Jacksonville. They were a huge presence in our Walk4Hearing. Below is a youtube video of them singing the National Anthem at our Walk. Everyone was blown away by their performance.

Wonderful video and I think some deaf understand hearing people but don't get me wrong that idk if deaf can't hear because deaf can't hear and well for me I'm hard of hearing but I'm Trying to mastered Deaf sight plus I take ASL for hearing people understand deaf students so good luck for deaf student that need to help translate to the hearing people.
Note: For classrooms that have free seatings, always try to get the front. I get really annoyed because some people would go class early just to snatch the front seats. Not that I can really do anything about it though..
On a side note, that seems really fun.. I've been wearing the hearing aids since young and now in college, I still struggle to listen to teachers in class. I never told my friends but my teachers know. Even now, I'm still afraid to tell people around me because I'm scared that people would talk about me. I was mocked several times in school (I go to mainstream school since pre school) and especially by my own family, especially my brother when i was young. The trauma stayed with me as I grew up...
I never had a classmate who is hearing impaired either. People would think I'm ignoring them, don't wish to have a conversation with them(because i can't lipread their lips!!) and I'm perceived as a 'blur' person. I worry about finding jobs in the future because I know how cruel some people can be. Despite all that, I'm having fun in college now because my friends love me for who I am, despite me being unaware of what's going on usually. I rely on them for lots of information. I feel like i'd be stronger and courageous if i had someone hearing impaired by my side :)
i know what its like i been on the recieving side of that for a long time. i do get why you don't tell people about it, i don't tell people right away either. i always like people to get to know me first then when i tell them its usually fine. most people just need education on dealing with people like us. as for getting work, there is something out there for you. its just about finding the right employer for the kind of work your interested in, i have been from job to job because employers just don't want to learn about what i need from them but thats there loss. there are a lot of unique skills that others don't and sometimes these unique skills can do a lot in the work place, i know i have made use of my ability to read body language in order to understand what type of person that come in and how to deal with them best. glad you are having fun at college with great friends thats whats important having fun. also don't be afraid to ask for help these friends of yours can help you in day to day life, thats what friends do
NiteOwl Thank you so much for this comforting reply. :) So far, I don't have any dreams or any idea or what to work as in the future but I know things certainly won't be easy. I'll come a long way but I will still somehow deal with it. That's certainly a nice skill you have gained. I used to observe people a lot from the sidelines. Until i decided I wanted to be part of the non-observers and have fun while I could, so I started observing people less.
Yes I'm so grateful for my friends because they've been there for me for about 2 years now. Though they don't know about it, we treasure one another, so I can say we're genuine friends. It's not that I'm afraid of telling them or anything, but because I don't want them to think so much. There are always cases like when you can't hear, they will be like "oh, i forgot you can't hear well". Those words will hurt you even though you know they didn't have that intention.
For instance, my dad once told me to cook rice and I cooked the wrong amount of cups, so he said "Nevermind, it's ok. because you can't hear well". I got mad and told him not to say it like that because it really hurts me. Simply because I can't hear well, and I make mistakes because I can't hear the right thing. You know how you'd feel useless at that moment? I mean, even my dad does that, my high school friend did that too and I don't think anybody is an exception. Sometimes it's better to leave it be and let people assume about you than telling them the truth. It makes things a little easier as well as we won't become sensitive between one another.. :)

I am profoundly deaf but my I was born deaf and I wear a cochlear implant on one side of my head and it's really hard to understand sometimes and I fo hate people talking in another language through my transmitter but I'm starting to get use to it and there's a hearing aid that I really love which is the rondo and I love it 😁😁😁😁😊😊😊😊

Why can't they learn both ASL and speak(bilingual)? it's more effective and well accessible communication for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I am deaf, of course born deaf. I use ASL but unfortunately, I am not oral speaker. I think all of these kids speak pretty good and make good communciate with the hearing people and possible get a good job that easy because the most of the deaf people who don't do oral speaking have a hell hard time finding a job, sometime never found a job in a lifetime. All they have to do is to keep struggling, trying to survive on, and not to give up forever. Hearing people really have a hard time to accept the deaf people especially deaf culture living on the earth. I have fought to get a job and did got it and I don't think I would be able to change my job or quit my job even I hate my job for another job or I will get stuck on collecting small SSI, SSDI or SSA check forever, not enough money to cover up the cost of living. Not an easy life. Hearing people have EASY life, able to make more money easy and can afford ANYTHING, really can do anything. Wonderful video.

I love how many ASSSUMED these kids do not know ASL or anything about them. I happen to know one girl as her parents are BOTH deaf, Yes she does sign and is fluent in ASL, for this video she uses her voice.
