Love that walnut, the king of furniture woods, seconded by cherry.
I like the way you described rough sawed as smooth. Reminds me of a used car salesman who said rusted cars were recently painted.
My two most favorite woods for carving and turning.
Eastern Black Walnut has such a lovely smell to it when being cut on the table saw.

Excellent job ladies, Walnut and Cherry are really beautiful woods for woodworking, I know some lucky person will appreciate your handywork.
I loved the walnut footage the most.
Especially in hardwoods do not hesitate to cut shorter lengths. Hardwood projects often make good use of 4 to 6 footers,, and when you have a 'banana' log,, cherry,, walnut, etc,, cut the log into shorter lengths before you begin. You will yield more board feet. Sometimes, substantially more board feet. Structural stuff may be less valuable in 6 and 8 foot lengths,, but not furniture grade hardwoods. And yes. your solar kiln may be the perfect place to sticker and stack the walnut and cherry.
You could also use a different type of mill that uses a circular saw blade that can angle 90 degrees instead of a bandsaw so you can cut more narrow short boards first.
I own a sawmill and it is a lot of fun watching your team working as hard as you do. I have 100 % respect for the skill that you have acquired and your awesome work ethics
Cherry and Walnut are two woods that feel amazing once they have a nice boiled linseed oil and beeswax finish put on them......just gives them that butter soft texture you cant help but to put your hand on.

I like the colored ends identification,red cedar is beautiful,black walnut is big$ I can't believe the Woodmizer I run dont have the rectangle pad -slab and board return, I like it good job,bummer steel in it ,bust a blade or dull it at the least we get ours resharpened if possible,even dirt in bark can be devastating,yard trees are the worst for steel almost need magnet or xray ✌!

Hello, George here. When I was a kid in central Ohio, a tornado nocked over a line of really old wild black cherry trees. My dad cut the trunks into log sections to trailer to the mill. The chief sawyer looked them over and said he would not saw one of them. He said there was a stone inside the log. While the mill was working on the other logs dad cut that one open with the chainsaw. sure enough, right where the man said, there was a granite stone about the size of a softball. We had lots of black cherry lumber from all those logs. I was amazed that that old sawyer could see that that stone was in there. Dad said some old farmer probably set a stone in the fork of the tree when it was small. I really enjoy your videos. thank you so much for providing them. Smiling, George.

Painting your end cuts also seals them too, not just identity. That was a black walnut btw and that was nice, super expensive. Almost driven extinct by their use for rifle stocks over the WW1-WW2 period Sucks there was metal in the Cherry, but that is still nice lumber.
Watching your channel brings back memories of my grandparents farm in the mountains of WV. I used to love spending my summers there.
You ladies do an awesome job are used to work in my stepfather’s Sawmill and we used to Cut a lot of hardwood sometimes we would cut pine and red cedar where is the love working in my stepfather’s mill is in the forestry Broadus out So keep up the good work girls love it have a great one and God bless

As a woodworker Walnut is my favourite wood for many reasons. Smells great off the saw, finishes beautifully with no need of stain, and works very well, neither too hard nor too soft.

One thing to consider with woods like walnut and cherry or hard maple and many others that are used for cabinets or furniture is that width is premium but also shorts are very easy to sell. A nice four foot or six foot board can be a premium priced sale. I know it is extra storage space and maybe a little more work to fit in the kiln, but you can get so much more per board foot on shorts they can be worth the trouble most of the time. So those weird flitches that are narrow on both ends but wide for four foot in the middle can be cut out with the cross cut saw and then run through the edger. Just a thought.
Also a long four inch wide board still has a market also. Look hard at getting every board foot out of those hardwoods to max the profit. Shame to see them burn as firewood.
In truth, a clear face is usually more of a premium than a wider board with a defect in it. That would be called sawing for grade as opposed to simply cutting through and through.
My heart sank a little when you said you hit metal that never does a wood sawing blade any good.
It was cool to see you see you mill a couple of hardwood logs and show how it's done. The woodgrain in the walnut log is so beautiful to see. I'm a low budget woodworker, so often I've turned to the repurposing of pallet wood or wooden crates to make something.

Good idea to color code the lumber, very smart idea . Love the way you keep the lumber yard clean and try to use all of the wood product . Lumber, fire wood and saw dust . Business model every one could use in any business! Good job girls .

I imagined I could smell the cherry sawdust, when you made that first cut. One of my favorites. Iron/steel inclusions always leave a bluish streak. Character marks. Nice work saving what you could.

I am sure that there could be a metal sensor installed ahead of the blade that would stop the machines forward motion if there was metal in the wood.

Nice watching you guys cut on nicer wood, I hope you guys saved the off fall/ "flitches" someone might like those for decorative creations and or Crafts. Smells good and is Beautiful. That kind of wood is harder to come by. Those pieces can always be dried out.

Glade to see you milling some hardwood. I've cut millions of board feet of construction grade softwoods on my mills over the years But Woodmizers absolutely shine when it comes to getting the most dollar added value out of a mid to high grade hardwood log.

do you ever see really flamed or curly type of woods often? figured maple etc.... guitar necks and bodies look great using those woods/grains. you people do great work. peace
A bent tooth on your saw will cause marking. If you can find it and straighten it with a crescent wrench it might save you a saw change. And yes, the lumber is beautiful too. 🙂
Cherry and Walnut are certain 2 of the most beautiful woods to mill up.

That is some awesome wood. Doors , tables , cabinets I love working with different types of wood. Milled up some Liquid Amber and Canary Pine last winter and have been working it now. Addiction.
