You're comparing nice ocarinas with plastic student recorders and whatever the heck that orange one is. Alto is also a more popular choice for solo recorder.
Thank you for the comparison. Despite the quality of the product, ocarina have cleaner / solid transition between notes. On recorder, i can hear "redundant" sounds. Our fingers and breath must be very precise / sync to avoid those "imperfection" - unless it's intentional. So with oracrina i think beginners could sound "better", while with recorder one might need more practice - yet it can produce more variety of sounds, such as bending. Both have their own unique sound.
I might be biased in my own taste, but I prefer the tone of any of those ocarinas to the recorders used. Though it was eye opening to see a recorder actually played competently. Good video demonstration!
No wonder American kids are so traumatized by the recorder. Most might be playing that dollar store version. And then growing up to be vocal about their hatred and thus forever sullying the reputation of an otherwise very beautiful instrument. 'Tis sad indeed.
I sucked at music class in school and couldn't get anything done. I played Zelda and purchased an Ocarina thinking that it makes a nice deco, but I quickly managed to get a recognisable tune out of it. It doesn't make me a musician, but it hit me thinking what I learned in an hour at home was worth more than the entire course in school...
th-cam.com/video/BRkkRDQjzjI/w-d-xo.html This is an actual professional recorder player with a degree in historical woodwinds. When the comparison is fair, recorder far outshines ocarina.
Recorders have a more solid and less windy sound. They also crack very easily. Ocarinas sound more windy but they also sound sweeter, softer and calm. You'll easily know it's a wind instrument. It's more relaxing to hear music from Ocarina.
We had to use the recorder at school when I was a kid. I always had the issue you have with the lower notes too, they kinda crack... Even the difference between the best recorder you had and the cheapest ocarina is jaw dropping...
Ocarina's are my favorites me personally i prefer 4 holed ocarinas because get this even with less holes ocarinas sound good and i think they have a very natural sound and a nice echo
Low quality or cheap recorders won't be good at all, I have tried the green Yamaha and it doesn't offer me a good sound... but I have a better experience with my higher quality recorders:) For me both instruments are wonderful so it's hard for me to say which one is better...
Wooden recorders are better, this is not doing the recorder any kind of service in my opinion, sorry. You did great on the ocarina, but the recorder-part was a bit of a swing and a miss.
Before I started playing the ocarina, I never realized that there was such a huge difference between certain instruments. I mean, I know you always get what you pay for, but I never realized just how bad a dollar store recorder could sound. They should all have the same, basic design. But apparently, there's a lot less quality when you pay less. Kind of like those really cheap Zelda replicas on Amazon. Even though they're ceramic, they're extremely hit and miss on quality. Even the one I purchased is a plastic Ocarina of Time replica from Songbird Ocarina which cost almost twice the amount as some of those bad replicas on Amazon, but the sound is much better and more spot on. All that being said, I much prefer the ocarina to the recorder. The ocarina has a much softer and sweeter tone to it. The recorder sounds a lot harsher and much more flute-like in comparison. Of course, one factor could be that it's being recorded (no pun intended) at a closer range, which could also distort the sound a bit more. But I'd still take the ocarina any day of the week. But I have a harder time with the transverse style because my wrists just don't seem to want to turn that much, but perhaps one with the mouthpiece that branches off more to the side would be easier for me to play. But for now, I'll stick to my modified pendant Kokiri Edition which I play almost on a nightly basis. :)
Yikes, those have got to be some of the worst recorders I've ever heard! Even getting a decent-quality plastic Yamaha instead of the cheap ones will really improve the sound.
Well, what do you expect using some of the worst plastic recorders ive seen? Many plastic recorders have good sound. These ones, not so much. That orange one needs to go in the garbage. Also, most people dont just play soprano recorder.
That orange recorder is a crime against music.
That orange recorder MUST be what plays on elevators in Hell! Horrid!
Just imagine The Girl From Ipanema played on that recorder! Ouch!

Great video!! I love ocarina personally
I love them both for different reasons. Thank you for your support!

You can hear the difference in the Recorders but to me all the Ocarinas sound the same.
Amazing class. Youre awesome player. Thank you😊

Actually anything sounds better than recorder.

Go for the yamaha recorder anyday over the dollar store one
1:49 flute, 3:13 ocarina.

I truly believe that both have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Yeah just the slight higher priced Yamaha version is still very inexpensive and a miles better
Ocarina search strawberry ocarina now you tell me

As a recorder player I’m kinda biased my favorite song to play is little fugue on recorder
For me the verdict is: NOcarina :-)
People in the comments are so weird, they just like that ocarinas are quiter than recorders

Use of wooden one wooden ones are better
recorders sound awful compared to ocarina

You're Right. These are the recorders at my school.
