I worked for CEX for 4 years so I'm pretty familiar with the ins and outs of how the stores run. Had it been tested in my shop it would not have been bought due to the spindle being missing. From the looks of it you had purchased the discounted grade which basically means if it works we buy it, also the case for unboxed grade but condition must be better. Discounted grades do not necessarily need to come with any additional version cables that would have been sold with it in its original packaging. We do not take the item apart peice by peice and check every little detail during testing as it was not a standard procedure due to the high volume of things we needed to test. Basically if we did this to all items no one would be able to sell their goods. The items come with a 2 year warranty which is alot longer than any second hand good stores offer and you have a 14 day full refund policy for any online purchases. Sometimes the items are sent to RMA which is basically our repair centre to be fixed. They take the item apart and sometimes it gets sent back fixed but with missing peices. Much to the frustration of my team. So its not always the stores fault. Alot of the time we just take the hit. I do understand your frustration though but people make mistakes and sometimes it's nothing to do with incompetents. Just poor communication between corporate and franchise. But if it was the case of it being tested in store by a member of the team. It really should have been rejected. Sorry about that buddy.
Was not discounted and the spindle was missing so did not work, I was frustrated as we were in the middle of lockdown and had to wait 6 months to get a working unit, they then would not accept it back till they checked cctv at the store it was sent from….which they did not actually have. Staff are held accountable for every item they purchase so they would have figured out what store it came from, who booked it in, who tested it and who bought it from the serial number when it gets investigated because it is a loss and a broken spindle is deffinately not gonna fly so someone needs to take the blame. So the correct staff would have been spoken too for your own piece of mind. :)
Lucky my local cex is pretty good the guys and few girls who work in there are all console geeks if that's the word to use really know there stuff so never had to return a single thing to them this is cex in Coventry city great staff very polite and always willing to have a laugh well waiting for your games or consoles
i go to the cex located at newry in northern ireland and while ive had nearly all good experiences with them, i bought a ps1 (model SCPH-5552) in november 2021 and it worked fine but the controller didnt work for around 2 days, then it suddenly just started working, pretty weird
CEX themselves shouldn't be blamed, but rather the person who checked the PS1 from the seller in the first place, oh yeah... there's nobody who checked, if you're going to buy from CEX, buy in-store and in-store only.

My fav Cex time was when I bought a few xbox one games on a tuesday - went to return them for a credit note on friday - one had the wrong disc, and due (to my error) the other two I already had (Xbox live subscription). I get told they can replace the 'wrong' title in the case no problem (very big of them), but I could go fuck with the other two as the store has a 'two day return policy.' So I should have got them in the day before. He told me it's because we don't want people treating the shop like a free rental place. I just wanted a credit note. I wasn't being a cheeky monkey getting a free rental - I'm fucking 50 years old. All very silly. My main gripe was there was nowhere in store that outlined their 'policy' nor was it on the receipt. It's clearly a whole heap of bullshit and against outlined consumer rights. So I went back and put superglue in their locks.
Ive had some interesting cases from cex, brought an old kindle, i think it was the discounted wifi model, they gave me a good condition 3g model instead, brought a megadrive a week months ago, came with an arial cable and a dodgy power brick, meaning that more often than not it doesn't work
They consistently list a PS1 Dual Analog controller for the bargain price of £6. Every now and then I order one and every time - without fail - a DualShock arrives. Ridiculous.
The only time I go to cex now is for Disney infinity characters because most are 20p and they are cool decorations. The last time I went for anything different was when I bought GTA IV, RDR 1 and Saints Row IV. Only RDR 1 works properly and even that buffers quite a bit. I get they are cheap and each game was around £5 but still they sell broken games and consoles without caring
Yes I got some Sony Xm3 headphones..great price...but the battery would last 20mins after an 8hr charge. So I took them back and they said ah yes these have been through the system so many times. I thought well the battery is totally worn out and unsellable..so why keep on trying to get rid of them. Does anyone here like cashconverters? Av had some amazin deals from them. Each shop is different tho ..some expensive some very cheap
I got a used NTSCJ PS1 about 5yrs ago with a damaged drive, I just swapped whole drive unit with a Chinese replacement - the drlive was only about £12, seems fine now 🤠👍 Bit off topic but I once saw a GAME staff member refuse a customer trading in her PS4 because it had a replacement fig8 power lead - refused her not because it was defective, but because it was not the exact one that was originally in pack... Crazy.

Sold a brand new camera to them in box unused sealed they said they can only giive me B grade value reluctantly i said OK So i ordered a Grade A camera from them it arrived scratched with all the labels removed clearly well used When i complained they said prove it 😆 Never used them again CRAZY
I've been pretty lucky with CEX central London stores since the late 1990s... I've bought a few 2nd hand DSLR cameras... I did test the cameras in-store and took my lenses to try out. Only gripes I had was buying 2nd hand PS1 games in the late 1990s and forgetting to check for scratches on the disc before you leave the store. I had a 18-200mm Canon manual zoom lens, I went to sell it to cex and they rejected it...because they said the servo zoom motor is broken.... I said its a manual zoom.... They don't have servos... Only auto focus.....manager thought I was lying😆.
It’s a crt screen, it’s not flickering, it just shows up like that on camera - modern lcd and plasma don’t but they make retro games look sh#t. Cheers for watching
I was able to fine one at garage sale. Someone had spilled soda down inside and when disconnecting the power cable for the Lazer it broke clean off the board... sigh. But I was able to solder it back on.
A tip I read to deal with the overheating issue of the PS1 was to turn it upside down. Sony replaced my PS1 console for free, twice, with reconditioned ones.
I'm am super surprised that it shipped with a cheap 3rd party av cable,the playstation 1 av cable is one of the most common gaming cables ever it shipped with the ps1,ps2 and even with most ps3s theres literally millions out there
I think he means the RF modulator cable with the little box that plugs into the composite and sound RCA connectors, plus the 3.5mm jack in between that provides DC, which he mentions. Specific to early PS1.
Unlucky , I got a CPU X7900 for £380 ,retail at the time was just under £1000 .It was still in the sealed retail box , and turned out to be a golden chip ,Standard clock 3.3 gig , overclocked 4.9 on all ten cores ,at 80 degrees C . I took a chance and won big style , no complaints at CEX .

1:05 CeX obviously doesn't want to waste money, so they spent less money on a cheaper (even though worse) cable and made the profit off you buying it. My local CeX store has a PS1 for £35, so you should be careful when buying stuff like this from CeX or online like eBay.
Emulation is never as good as playing on the original hardware , but for simplicity and ease I can where you are coming from. I will stick with consoles.

I bought a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Mega Drive from CEX for £6.00 new in box with the manual, pretty good deal considering it’s only got a couple blemishes here and there.
Sometimes they give great service and the stuff turns up fine, just depends where is comes from and where was checked. I’ve had some absolutely great stuff as well as some questionable items.
Ah yes, here in the States we had and still have Gamestop to try and screw us over. In 2007, I purchased a PS2 with two controllers from them, refurbished. I got a three hundred cockroach body filled system with a broken controller that had been smeared with.. I really hope it was butter. I honestly thought someone was playing a prank on me. They weren't, it was so bad, they wouldn't allow me back in store to return it. The smell from the decaying roach bodies was too toxic and pungent. I ended up with a 500$ USD refund gift card in exchange for not telling anyone about how bad the service was. Got a X360 instead, to this day, I pause before I take any electronics apart, due to the legitimate PTSD from that day.

They definitely sent out a questionable unit but the cable is correct. You say it should be a special cable with a DC out but that is wrong. The first Playstation model only came with cheap rca cables. My TV at the time didn't have rca inputs so I had to buy an rf converter for the Playstation. The rf converter was a little box that used the power port on the Playstation along with the yellow and white rca ports. Later revisions of the rf converter used a multiport plug instead of rca Jack's. If I were you I'd be concerned about the system overheating and not working properly. The first model design were the systems known for having that problem.
Actually , the first uk versions had Official Sony RFU Adaptor AV Cable Lead Included as the rear had the dual audio and the additional port. Sounds like you got the later edition that just took audio and video and need the rf box bought separately, of course there were dozens of revisions so may just have been the uk version or I got an odd version, it’s so hard to confirm all of the versions, bundles ect there were :) I’ve got several boxed ps1 models and use the later revision to actually game on as it’s the best version. @@retrogameunboxing3452 I missed the UK part when watching this. I'm in N. America. I got a Playstation at launch and it came with just the rca cables and the rf adaptor was sold separately. The overheating problem started to become popular less than a year after and then we got the revised design where they took the rca ports off and went with the multi-port on all versions after that. My system overheated and messed up about 6 to 7 months later when I got the first Resident Evil. Sony told me they'd fix it for free but I would have to pay to send it to them to fix it and pay to have it shipped back plus insurance. That was going to cost $89.00 at the time so I just went out and bought a new Playstation,switched consoles in the box and returned it to the store as defective. I accidentally left Telken in the old system and to this day I still have the empty case for the game.lol

I stopped going after i was barred from trading in because of a neo geo pocket i traded in being flagged for being stolen, even after i’d shown proof of purchase on my ebay account and went through their entire support system they didn’t revoke it, i’ve also bought a mega drive from there which had the complete wrong cables and a ps2 with a completely bust controller, both of which they refused to make right, can’t say ill be buying from them again 🤣

U can also get a drive spindle for 50 pence on line or the full drive for about a tenner as I've just done 3 of my PS1.s

Indeed, I consistently order ps1 games and get “value label “ “platinum editions” ect instead of the pictured original black version .

im from Spain and i remember the time GameStop was still around in this country, that was when i was still a little kid. nowadays, the chain isn't there anymore, as they had failed, and closed all their franchises in the country, for good. i noticed that since they closed down the only franchise they had in Cordoba, at a mall.

They definitely sent out a questionable unit but the cable is correct. You say it should be a special cable with a DC out but that is wrong.
The first Playstation model only came with cheap rca cables. My TV at the time didn't have rca inputs so I had to buy an rf converter for the Playstation. The rf converter was a little box that used the power port on the Playstation along with the yellow and white rca ports. Later revisions of the rf converter used a multiport plug instead of rca Jack's.
If I were you I'd be concerned about the system overheating and not working properly. The first model design were the systems known for having that problem.
Actually , the first uk versions had Official Sony RFU Adaptor AV Cable Lead Included as the rear had the dual audio and the additional port. Sounds like you got the later edition that just took audio and video and need the rf box bought separately, of course there were dozens of revisions so may just have been the uk version or I got an odd version, it’s so hard to confirm all of the versions, bundles ect there were :) I’ve got several boxed ps1 models and use the later revision to actually game on as it’s the best version. @@retrogameunboxing3452 I missed the UK part when watching this. I'm in N. America. I got a Playstation at launch and it came with just the rca cables and the rf adaptor was sold separately.
The overheating problem started to become popular less than a year after and then we got the revised design where they took the rca ports off and went with the multi-port on all versions after that.
My system overheated and messed up about 6 to 7 months later when I got the first Resident Evil. Sony told me they'd fix it for free but I would have to pay to send it to them to fix it and pay to have it shipped back plus insurance. That was going to cost $89.00 at the time so I just went out and bought a new Playstation,switched consoles in the box and returned it to the store as defective.
I accidentally left Telken in the old system and to this day I still have the empty case for the game.lol

I stopped going after i was barred from trading in because of a neo geo pocket i traded in being flagged for being stolen, even after i’d shown proof of purchase on my ebay account and went through their entire support system they didn’t revoke it, i’ve also bought a mega drive from there which had the complete wrong cables and a ps2 with a completely bust controller, both of which they refused to make right, can’t say ill be buying from them again 🤣

Lol, it’s a shop we have in the uk that is usually located between a chicken shop and a bookmakers , it sells dvd box sets and games that people who need to pay their dealer sell there stuff to :)
