Actually the Great Wall did a great job in the Ming dynasty It only fell because the Manchu people negotiated and bribed the guards to let them pass, they didn't conquer it
I've recently watched a video talk about a great Chinese diaspora. It was originated from the collapse of Ming dynasty when two factions fought for their right to the throne, while one was too weak so they invited the Manchu to help them and little they known the Manchu were eyeing at China for a very long time. This was an invitation to their delight and an open opportunity to fulfill their age old wishes in which they have succeed resulting the later Qing dynasty. This was not an invasion at first but an invitation by the foolish and the power hungry which lead to the fall of Ming and the great many Chinese descendants were scattered all over the world after this event.
The Great Wall still did it's job preventing what they called the barbarians from invading the country. It was the corruption and the broken system within it's governing that lost it's country.

当国家整体机能没太大问题的时候长城还是有用的，它能在战术上极大限制游牧军队的发挥。但如果国家本身就很衰弱了，没办法组织像样的抵抗，长城的效果就很微弱了
