The Philippines set aside the pain of Asia's financial crisis on Friday (12/06) to toast 100 years of Independence from Spain. At least two million people jammed a seaside park and cultural centre in downtown Manila to watch a parade of 54 floats and military and civilian brass bands, police said. A massive fireworks display was due to follow along with a night of street dancing. President Fidel Ramos stepped onto the balcony of a restored house in the town of Kawit, south of Manila, to re-enact revolutionary leader General Emilio Aguinaldo's waving of the
Filipino tricolor in defiance of colonial power Spain on June 12, 1898.
