It's not _free trade_ when the US and EU are not competitive, got it.

I thought they were all laughing at the Chinese brand. Will be no competition. Why are they putting tariffs on Chinese products?

Both United States and EU have now openly announced to the world that Chinese EV are more value effective than their own. Percentage of tariff represents how the respective governments evaluate the parity between them. US is most ineffecient (100%) EV sales in China will within two-three months supercede that of fossil fuels. That means the marginal cost of EV will be even lower. At the same time both quality and technology are improving rapidly. I am predicting both US and EU will have to escalate their tariff soon again.

      Good perspective.
Be honest, 48% is not such a big deal. Chinese EV cars can still make a huge impact on EU market, even with that 40% tariff. Now that the tariff is set, Chinese EV cars can make plans in exporting cars to EU. And EU will accept these cars. It is actually good for both sides. Instead of selling the Chinese EV cars, which is loaded with features and with high quality and price ratio, with "market competitive price," they are just selling at "premium price." So Chinese EV cars will simply add more features to their cars so they can sell at premium price.
This allows Chinese EV car makers not to use "competitive price" as marketing tool, but feature and quality as marketing tool. And this allows EU EV car makers some breathing room. It is a Win-Win situation.
China will apply some "gesture" tariff on some EU products. But that is about it. Back to business.

A few years ago, US and EU fought BANANAS Tariffs Wars.

Great, maybe they want missiles instead. There’s a bit of overcapacity there as well!
