I heard that there was some audio edited out of this - when Satriani sat down to play, somebody yelled "Try topping that one Satriani" - I think it was after SRV finished "Pride and Joy".
That was my takeaway, too! To play that fast and fluid on a big old Guild 12 string, is so much more difficult than he makes it look. An incredible player...
Stevie Ray was and still is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived i got to see him in concert his last performance in Memphis Tennessee Mud Island theatre its was AWESOME when he was killed in that helicopter crash i was in high school my ag teacher liked him as well he knew i loved Stevie Ray he let me and the whole class sit outside by my truck the whole 2 hours of class and jam out to Stevie Ray i miss him
I wish to God that there were more high school teachers that could act like human beings when they interact with their students. Maybe I wouldn't have hated it so much. Props to that teacher.
All guitarists have those days where we find the flow and suddenly we're amazing, SRV lived in that flow his whole life. Off this performance I'd challenge anyone to find me a better candidate for the greatest guitarist ever.
Pride & Joy was the tune Stevie performing at MTV unplugged and it was the first for me to see him play 🙏🎵☮️❤️. BTW . . Joe didn't get the chance to sit in with Stevie.
I remember I was watching this on the TV, I really felt sorry for Satriani, no way he could match this performance by SRV. Technically Joe is great, but the energy and emotion coming from SRV's playing is almost impossible to match.
Dennis Niemeijer Hi, that’s not what I thought when I saw it on tv. I had been playing a while and worshiped both of them. I thought both of them showed a different, but fantastic new side of themselves. A twelve string guild and a banjo. The guy who composed and played the album surfing with a banjo and an egg. I have no idea how the hands of the giant didn’t snap the gentile neck on the guild. It was perfect. In fact I gave it to Joe for the banjo.
Donald Fontes Satriani’s performance on this particular occasion wasn’t even in the same universe as SRV. The crowd knew it then and it’s easy to see all these years later. “Waterfall, nothing can harm me at all.”...Really?
I never got to see Stevie live because he was gone by the time i would have been old enough to. But he is favorite guitarist to this day. No one, and i mean no one, can play like him.
I am still crying. Swapped licks with him, just before he entered the 'Cobras '. He worked , like Hendrix to get there. Not a condescending bone in his body.
i love hearing the stories of how stevie fed off peoples energy and its so true because you can see him smile everytime the crowd cheats after he hits one of those crazy licks.
I love that you can tell he’s defaulting to playing electric, moving up the scale to a point where he’d bend into the next transition and then watch his mind say oh shit as he readjusts
God I miss this era in the 90s and these now legendary shows... Every one of them with fantastic BUT SRVs performance was iconic!! I had to come back to edit my original to say to anyone who works or has any kind of connection into the music industry of today as of 2020 If you guys can't deliver talent like this anymore why does your industry even exist... The talent is out there.. We all know it's out there cause we see it all over TH-cam and other media platforms.. Bands, singers and songwriters who have the talent and have truly earned the right to carry the torch forward from all the greats like SRV and bands of the 50s 60s 70s onward but you continue to push garbage year in and yr out while true music fans wait for something anything to come forward but you guys are deliberately holding them back and not giving them any kind of outlet to bring us their talent.. Why is this being done, I only went on this little rant to pay respect to SRV because he would be heartbroken if he ever saw the state of the music industry today.. And you guys in the industry should all hang your heads in shit for what you have done.. OK I've said my peace.. Long Live SRV & ALL THE GREATS!! God Bless
If you're familiar with the tribute band Texas Flood, tell me what's your thoughts on "imitation is an extreme form of flattery" (as I believe it's said).
You can thank Quincy Jones for ruining MTV...check out Billy Strings , a phenomenal young guitar player, incredible talent, right up there with Anyone. th-cam.com/video/tGgBMAaO3jE/w-d-xo.html
What kind of sorcery, witchcraft type of magic is this? I was waiting for the fretboard/neck of the guitar to start smoking when SRV was tearing it up! Jesus Christ... so, that's how you're supposed to use that thing?!?!😅🎉❤
So yeah, open up the show with Rude Mood and bomb the entire fkin block up in the air, why not? Joe grab that Kevlar armor and get inside a bunker, cause the Hurricane is here!!!!
Man I love the watch and all, but after hearing stevie do pride and joy, and catch decides to sing for whatever reason, I cate even handle the last song. Its like a hiighschool talent show, there's 2 acts left, and one guy surprises everyone by killing it, and then the guy that closes is like the quality act they expected at a high school talent show. if this was my only exposure to watch I would have a very different opinion of him. Its not fair that he went on after SRV but he also sings like a teenager trying to sound deep when they are singing for their girlfriend after a long speech about how they're gonna be a big deal one day
Wow, people are dumb. Joe and Stevie played totally different styles and songs that day. Listen to a Joe record or see a live Joe show. Then come back.
I remember watching this live and Jules Sheer was such an ahole to Stevie. He kept dismissing him and propping up Joe. It was clear who was the real talent and it wasn’t Joe. Re-watching this video I forgot about the part where Tools Sheer ( that’s not a spell check issue either) played with his buddy Joe. Not surprised why he dissed Stevie. RIP Stevie Ray you were the greatest!!!
Yeah k guys can we just say that satriani wasn't actually that good compared to historical guitar players. He's no Srv or hendrix or page or Clapton or Rhodes or van halen He's no Zack wilde, jack white or even Glen Frye. Sach is good he's just not amazing. Please stop mistaking composition for instrumental talent.
I always felt bad for Joe having to follow Stevie Ray Vaughan. Total nightmare for any guitarist but in a good way. 👍
I heard that there was some audio edited out of this - when Satriani sat down to play, somebody yelled "Try topping that one Satriani" - I think it was after SRV finished "Pride and Joy".

Have you heard Leo Kottke play 12 string 👍
imagine what halls he would fill up today clapton is top but SRV is the shit...
Me: I never knew Joe sang.
My nephew: I never knew he had hair.

🤣
He lost his hair when he heard Stevie play.

I wonder how many people have picked up a guitar because of him.Always has and always will be my favourite guitar players
Just shows who needs effects and who doesn’t !! RIP Stevie Ray
it's unbelievable how Stevie Made Satriani look like a standard singer songwriter. wow.
He really did, practically ridiculous really.
Only Stevie could manhandle a 12 string like that!
SRV demonstrating what his big brother meant when he said "he never plays anything the same way once."
All guitarists have those days where we find the flow and suddenly we're amazing, SRV lived in that flow his whole life. Off this performance I'd challenge anyone to find me a better candidate for the greatest guitarist ever.
Mike Love. Brothers inspired by srv and others. Plays and sings like an angel. A must listen/see.

Srv, awesome as always!!
That first vocal song Joe played should be released on the country stations. I bet it would be a hit!
Two pure legends! Epic

Love Joe and Stevie 2 of my favorite all-time guitar heros. Bet they never told Joe he had to go on after Stevie tho lol. They wrong for that

Sorry Kurt and others.. Srv killed it
They all killed it
all time favorite guitar guy
Would have been an incredible show to be at; SRV and Joe in such an intimate environment.
Great sound!

I hope the people who attended that wouldn’t shut up read this
'Love that Jules Shear guy. Is he real or did they get someone from SCTV to come in and act like a tool.
"Stevie has to catch an airplane." Fuck airplanes!!! 😞
Fun fact: Steve played that gutiar so hard he actually cracked the neck on it.
There was no matching SRV's raw talent and intensity in this performance, but Satriani's banjo tune was pretty sick too.
A FUCKING 12 STRING!
18:21 - A left-handed guitar on MTV Unplugged. Foreshadowing? 🤔
