  • Hi, we hope you enjoy our video of Making a Penny Table Top with Resin!
For this video we used the Polyester TruPro Water Clear Casting Resin available from
    www.fibreglassdirect.co.uk/po...
In case you missed any of the steps outlined in the video, we've written them all down.
Step 1. Tape on plastic edge leaving approx. 5mm above the glass
Step 2. Check that your table top is level
Step 3. Leave a 2mm gap between the outer layer of coins and the edge of the table
Step 4. Continue to stick coins to the table top using a small amount of super glue on each
Step 5. Weight out 1/2kg of TruPro clear casting resin, adding catalyst at a rate of 1% and mix thoroughly to avoid bubbles forming
Step 6. Brush on the resin covering all coins and voids in between and brush out any air bubbles. Leave to cure for approx. 2 hours.
Step 7. Mix another batch of resin again adding catalyst at 1% and pour over table top until it has filled level with the top edge. (Pouring the resin from a height also helps with air bubbles)
Step 8. Leave to cure for 24 hours
Step 9. Starting with 180 grit sandpaper start sanding the surface (a small amount of water will help to keep the sandpaper dust free)
Step 10. Continue sanding moving to smoother grades of sandpaper (240, 600, 1000) as you go until you reach a very smooth surface, without any scratched
Step 11. Wash the surface with a damp cloth. Dab on a small amount of Farecela Profile 300 rapid. Using a compounder dampen the mop and proceed to compound
Step 12. Moving on to Farecla 500 pre finish glaze and using a compounding pad on the mop, polish until you have reached the perfect finish
Step 13. Relax and enjoy your work of art :)

At what point do you remove the plastic mold and does the epoxy stick to it?

Can you please tell me approximately how many coins were used and how wide is the ‘table top’? I have a whisky jar of change but I don’t want to start the project until I know I can finish it, thanks

If i have some dips that would not be suitable to sand out what sort of finish do i need to get to so that i can put another coat of resin over the top? Will scratches etc notice or would the resin fill them?

That looks great and I plan on doing the same kind of penny table top. I dont have a way to create a ledge to keep the resin from dripping over the sides. I saw u used a strip of plastic or something but how did u stop that from sticking to the resin? What was that plastic strip made of? I'm really stuck because I dont want to stand there for hours wiping drips as they form. Any advice? Thanks. :)

Lovely! I do wish you would explain what the plastic edge is made from, and, how is it attached so that it doesn't drip through? Thanks.

Looks to be a strip of flexible plastic or mylar simply taped together.

I recently bought some Polyester Resin however I'm concerned with how strong it smells! Does the resin lose it's strong smell once cured?

    • @FibreGlassDirect
      @FibreGlassDirect  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Chris, yes it will. Polyester Resin does smell - it's definitely best to store and work with it in a well-ventilated area (don't forget your PPE!). The good news is the smell will go once cured. Thanks for watching!

Why did you sand and polish the epoxy finish? Was it gritty or bumpy? An epoxy finish is smooth as glass, so don't understand the extra steps. Thanks.

Hi Mary S, thank you for your comment. We actually used a Clear Polyester Resin for this project. During the curing process the styrene evaporates from the resin. This caused a ripple effect on the surface of the resin so we sanded it down to remove the ripples. Thanks for watching!

Interesting! Good to know. I'm looking to begin doing things like this.
Now what is the difference between the resin and epoxy? And what was your reasoning for using the polyester resin, simply preference?

    • @FibreGlassDirect
      @FibreGlassDirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi! We chose this really because we sell a lot of different types of polyester resin including the one shown in the video specifically for Clear Casting. We receive a lot of questions from customers on creating pieces similar to penny tables. Thanks for watching :)

I used to do auto body and paint they call this color sanding . We do that to take out all the imperfections to give it that deep gloss in the paint Even with epoxy if you want the very deep texture you can still go ahead and wet sand it like they did here and it glosses even deeper . They did a great job

    • @FibreGlassDirect

We used polyester resin in this case for our table top. It is not food safe though - so something to keep in mind.

I thought it's supposed to dry clear and flat? There should be no need to sand. All the other videos I've seen it's been pretty straight forward. Pour the epoxy, get rid of any bubbles, let dry, done.

Is there a reason you used that rather than epoxy? Wouldn't it have been easier that way? Just curious.

We simply stock a lot of Polyester Resins. We made this video in response to a lot of queries from our customers who were looking to undertake similar projects. That was really why :)

"Tape on plastic edge..." It's just plastic? Did you cut it yourself? Can it be bought? What is it exactly? Details, my friend, the devil is in the detail.

Unless you want bristles from your brush to end up in your resin, DO NOT use a cheap craft brush as shown.
