How to Sew a French Seam with a Split - DIY Step by Step Sewing Tutorial for a Professional Finish
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 พ.ย. 2024
- Easy to follow, step by step, clear and concise tutorial on how to sew a French Seam with a split. No need to trim any seams for a beautiful professional finish.
As most commercial patterns are made with a ⅝” seam allowance, this tutorial guides you through using that measurement.
If you want to sew with industry standards, or you are using a very fine or sheer fabric for your project, adjust your seam allowances on your pattern to ⅜”. Stitch the first seam with a ⅛” seam allowance and follow with ¼” for the second row of stitching.
It’s a very neat and clean finish for any sewing project with a split. Especially useful when you don’t own a serger or overlocker.
**Do not use this finish for thick or heavy fabrics. Those are more suited to be finished with a flat felled seam.
It’s important to be very precise with your stitching as you need to cut right into a corner that needs flipping to other side.
It doesn’t take long to master even for beginner sewists and the result is impressive!

Perfect tutorial! There is no fluff and filler to drag it out, and the tutorial itself is well narrated & the video provides a clear guide to follow! 100/10!!
Thank you so much. This is what I try to strive for so it’s so nice to hear. Thanks for watching!!😊
As a beginning sewer, this was exactly what I was looking for - and in addition to my thanks to you for showing this technique, I must also comment as so many others have, this is the clearest, most concise, easiest to watch and understand instructional video. Thank you so very much.
Thanks Charlie, So happy to hear this. I hoped that my tutorial was clear enough for everyone to follow along. Thanks so much for watching and please have a look at some of my other tutorials. Cheers!😊
This video was 4 years ago but it was what I needed to finish my scrub tops properly, thank you ❤
Glad I could help!
I've been sewing simple hems for several years and recently started trying new techniques. Your videos on the french seam and the split are great - the perfect pace and amount of detail. I'm looking forward to seeing more. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate the feedback as this is what I am striving for. Lots more to come so please have a look at some of my other videos for more helpful tips. Cheers!
Found this video and am ecstatic!!! I've recently begun to sew linen dress shirts with French seams and have side slits and this video is perfect !! You make it so easy to do and I thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
Glad you found this too😊. I love this finish as well . Please have a look at my single layer pocket tutorial as it is great for linen
I'm a sewing professional. But I hadn't seen one of these in years & needed a video to help me remember how to do it. Lol! Thanks for your concise instructions & clear video. Really helpful!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I’m really glad I was able to help and also to get professional feedback. I’m hoping that my videos will be clear for everyone🙏😊

Wish I could like this video twice. I’ve always wanted to sew clothes but thought I had to have a serger. I want to make a dress with a slit so this is exactly what I needed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!!!
Thanks so much. Glad you like it. Please also have a look at some of my other tutorials. You may like some of the flat fell seam ones and how to make skinny straps etc.. Cheers!

Let me know what you think. Have a great day!!😊🙏
This tutorial was just what I needed for my 18th Century adjustable petticoat!! I was wandering for quite a while how I could finish the side seams with the slit at the top.
This is it!! Thank you so much! You saved my project!!🎉❤
Glad it was helpful!
You are a great teacher! I’m not a good sewer but trying to learn a bit more each day. This is so well and clear demo.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I dislike how most commercial patterns ignore how to properly finish a garment. This is a beautiful finish and I can't wait to try it out on a shirt I am working on.
I agree. Some of those instructions are a bit sus…. Thanks for watching😊
Throwing this into the side of a skirt for a zipper. It's so clean, and the edge will be so finished. Thank you for your clear, concise instructions!
Great! Thanks for watching😊
Excellent!!!!Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I was sewing a pocket with french seams and had no idea how to go from the french seam to finishing the hand opening of the pocket. Luckily I found your video and was able to apply the same principles to my use case :) My first pocket was beyond saving, but the second one looks so neat now :D
Great! Here is my other video that might help in the future.😊
Thanks so much - I want to do this on a dress I'm making and couldn't figure it out myself
Great video that gets straight to the point and shows all the steps so clearly
Thank you!
I love your basic tips, I've sewn for 56 years but can always learn something new. I have made side vents in retail clothes often. Especially if a but tight on tummy. Also if I'm shortening pants to Capri length the side vent looks nicer and your pants not just chopped off. I may refer some beginners in my upcycle groups to your channel.
Yes please do share my tutorials. It helps my channel. I hope my method is nice and easy for you. Cheers!
Brilliant! I was halfway through making a French Seam before I realised I needed something like this and didn't even know if it was possible. Just what I needed!
Glad I could help!
This technique is so neat with no raw edges. The next time I'll know what to do for a professional finish. Thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome. It's a really great finish. You just need to be precise. Have fun!
Great tutorial. Particularly helpful to show me how to work with the opening and the French seam as I’m putting an invisible zipper in. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
This is the best tutorial I have seen for that technique, thank you
You're very welcome!
Thank you so much. I followed your step by step instructions on splits at the bottom of a silk Kaftan I'm making. Because it's silk and I'm french seaming the sides I had no idea how I was going to perfectly intergrate the french seams into the splits until I found your instructional video. Worked out perfectly. You are a star xx
Wonderful! I’m so glad to hear it worked out for you. I’m sure that it looks fantastic. It’s a really beautiful finish especially for silk. Please have a look at some of my other tutorials. Thanks for watching😊
I really appreciate your tutorial. So clear and your voice is easy on the ear. I'm so glad I've come across your tutorials
Thank you so much!
I have been sewing for so many years but this is absolutely amazing
thank you😊
Thank you so much for this instructional video, I'm embarrassed to say how many times I watched it before attempting to sew on my first garment (a cotton/linen blend shirt for my son). Happy to report, it worked perfectly and I sewed the underarm of the short sleeves at the same time as the sides and split with the french seams. Now I just have to garner the courage to do the last step in this make-buttonholes! Think I need a glass of wine first.
Thanks for sharing! Glad to hear this. May I suggest doing a couple of test buttonholes on some scrap to find the best settings for your fabric and style. Better to throw out scraps than have to try and unpick anything. 😊
This is one of the best presented and most useful sewing videos I've ever seen. I had no idea that this was possible. When I've sewn slits before I've just serged my edges and sewn a straight seam, kind of fudging the bottom part turn under. I sew with a lot of linens and I will use this today on a garment I'm going to make. What a brilliant video and what a great way to upgrade my skills. Thank you.
You are very welcomed. So glad you found this useful. I think this is such a nice finish for sheer and lightweight garments. I really wanted to make a tutorial that wouldn’t seem intimidating even for beginners. If you sew a lot with linens, you may also like my tutorial on a single layer pocket. It’s not a patch pocket as the bag is under the top layer. It is also a beautiful finish for lightweight fabrics. Thanks for watching😊
@@NotchesSewing Yes I will watch the single layer pocket one too. I've actually pinned your TH-cam page to my browser so I don't lose it and can refer to many of your excellent videos. I'm not happy with the pockets I put into side seams . A single layer one sounds much more elegant. Thank you very much.
This is brilliant. I don't know how TH-cam knew I needed this video!
Thanks Yeon! I really wanted to make a clear step by step tutorial so people wouldn’t be “afraid” of attempting this . I hope this helps. Please support my channel by sharing and checking out some of my other videos🙏😊
argh! i wish i'd found this four weeks ago. profoundly helpful, and as far as i can tell the only video covering this particular combination of french seam and side split.
thank you for providing such an excellent and precise tutorial!
Yes I had researched before I made this video and as far as I I know, this is the only video tutorial on this finish. Thanks for watching. What did you make 4 weeks ago?
@@NotchesSewing I decided to get on board the pandemic internet fad of making a 1600s pirate shirt. only, in my infinite ridiculousness, I decided to make it a learning process for French seams as it had every element you'd hate to do, cuffs, collar, neck split, side splits, and inserted sleeves... and then I chose jersey fabric... because apparently i hate myself =D
honestly though, it came out so comfy and cozy, and great for summer heat. I'm making another one hopefully with some learning picked up from the previous, and now from you!
Jersey !!to learn French seams??!!! what a challenge for yourself.😃. A pirate shirt is beautiful though. Do it with lightweight linen this time. I do have videos for french seams and also true flat felled seams ( and with pockets) if you want more challenge. Always test out on scraps if you can so if you bugger it up, there’s no unpicking. Just toss it and you know what not to do for the good project. Thanks again for watching. Please have a look at some of my other videos. I have some good tips and tricks. Cheers!
You’re video has just saved me. I am wanting to do a split hem for my graded design project in college and I had no idea where to start. Thank you so much 🙌🏼🙏🏼
Cool! Glad it helped. Please let me know what grade you get😀
Great video! I knew what I wanted to do, but wasn’t sure how to do it, since I’m working without a pattern. This is perfect! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely beautiful work! Thank you for this tutorial, it will bring a professional look and feel to my dress!
Glad it was helpful!
This was exactly what I needed to learn about sewing a vent in a French seam! Easy to see each step, and the verbal explanations as you did each step were immensely helpful! Thanks so much. And I’m now a subscriber! 😃
You are so welcome! Thanks for subscribing🙏
Crisp, concise commentary. Very good.
Glad you liked it!
I did it! Thank you. You are a gifted teacher.
Thank you😊
you are a life saver! having to fix some shirts and now i know how to do it!!!
most welcome😊
Exquisite! My goodness this was wonderful as I plan to make a pair of capris and I’ve always admired this feature.
Thanks Karen. I think you’ll love the results. Have fun!
Thank you so much! So clear so neat and tidy…
Thank you😬

Omg thank you soooo much!!! I am going to sew a dress with french side seams but I really wanted a slit and this is just sooo perfect
You are so welcome! You may even want to add a small piece of ribbon across the top of the split on the inside to give it more strength. You don’t want it to split when you get in and out of car etc..

I was stuck on this part of my blouse project and this video saved me:) Thank you so much for this helpful video!
You are so welcome! Thanks fo watching and taking the time to let me know. Were you using a commercial pattern or your own?
I refer back to this video often. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Glad you like it. I love this finish 😊
I can't thank you enough for this! I've been looking for a tutorial on this for years! French seams are my favourite for frail, airy fabrics and it's been a mystery for me how to tackle the issue! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Glad I could help! Try it out on some scrap before cutting the good delicate fabric. I love this finish as well especially for very fine fabrics. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Please share and check out some of my other videos. Cheers and have a great day!
@@NotchesSewing it goes without saying that I've watched all your videos and subscribed! Keep it up! We need people with your knowledge! Greetings from Greece!
Thank you! I’ve got a Greek hubby!
@@NotchesSewing that's brilliant! I hope he cooks too lol 🤣
He tries…….🤣
This is an excellent video. It’s clear and makes sewing splits so easy! Thank you!
You are so welcome! So glad to hear this as I challenged myself to make tutorial that everyone would understand as this is not simple to do at first glance. Cheers!
I'm so braindead and could not have fathomed how to do this without your guidance. Delightfully simple to achieve with the help of this video.
Isabella you are not braindead! This is not a simple task for many sewers. I’m so glad you found this helpful.

Saw this method in Threads magazine. Love that you did a video for it. I keep a reference notebook for things like this so I'm definitely additing your video to my reference list. Thank you so much. Love a visual.
Thanks so much for letting me know. I went and had a look at the magazine article. The method is pretty much the same but follow my instructions as it will be easier and stronger with less stress at the top of split. I will be adding more videos to my channel in future
Cheers
@@NotchesSewing you're right about the stress point. I immediately noticed that difference in your video. I'll be using your improved method. Thanks again.
Great let me know how you go😄
Wonderful and clear tutorial, many thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful! Thank you for such a clear and understandable tutorial!
You are so welcome!
Such beautiful work, thank you so much for sharing that with us, I hadn't seen this way of making the French seam with a split before. Wonderful

Superb , detailed and perfect !!! 👌

wow this is so clean and professional and clear, thank you, you really contributed to quality of my upcoming sewing projects
Wow, thank you! I am so happy to hear that as that was my goal to make it less scary and straight forward. ( not sure why all the thumbs down??) 😊
@@NotchesSewing french seams are my prefered seams as i dont own a serger, but i've been really struggling with sleeves and other curved seams, to keep them looking clean, crips and not bulky (i've noticed my linen shirts and trousers as well as some cotton tunics are all construdted by french seams). do you have any wisdom on that? would be much appreciated
Oh thank you so much, just what I needed for my current diy project!
Glad it was helpful!
You’re an excellent teacher.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching😊
This is amazing! Yours was the first video that I choose and I don't need to search any further. This is so professional and neat and easy to follow. I have just shortened a blouse with slits and was wondering how to do this. Thank you so much :)
Glad it was helpful! I actually researched a lot to see if there were any other videos before making this one. As far as I know there is no other video with this method. Only an easier version that you turn the sides of splits first and then catch the top ends into the french seam. Thanks so much for watching. Please share and have a look at some of my other videos. More to come!
Thank you for a quick response. I have subscribed and will be watching your other videos. Thank you for sharing this :)

Again a perfect tutorial. The result is perfect and makes a lot of sense with your clear explanation and demonstration. Thanks ! PS: I second the demand for the flat-felled seam version.
You're very welcome! I have so many videos I need to make….. It’ll come at some point. Thanks for the kind words. Another TH-camr actually left a comment previously calling me an amateur and then left a link to His video….. Then he couldn’t even do the split and said he was out of practice…………. Not cool🙃
Thank you so much, so well explained and such a neat professional finish! Going to go give it a try on a shift I am making.
So glad you think so! It’s a beautiful finish so hope you have fun doing it. Try it out on some scrap first so you don’t need to unpick anything if you don’t get it right on the first go.
