Hi Anthony! Great question! Allport is one personality theorist who is cited in the development of the Big 5, but there are many others too! Here's a very informative article that covers the history of this model: John, O. P., & Srivastava, S. (1999). The Big-Five trait taxonomy: History, measurement, and theoretical perspectives. In L. A. Pervin & O. P. John (Eds.), Handbook of personality: Theory and research (Vol. 2, pp. 102-138). New York: Guilford Press.
Have noticed incongruence among family members. There are also about 4 identities: genuine/authentic, how others see one, how one sees oneself, and one's aspirational identity.
hi,, I'd like to use the big five as my model in describing my respondents personality,, is there any drawbacks in using this to generally describe personality?
Hi Marc, There are pros and cons to all models, and this is no exception. One criticism of the model is that it is purely descriptive, and it does not provide information on the origin of personality (such as things like genetics, experience, etc). All things considered, it is a comprehensive model, and it's the most widely used typology out there today.

would it be safe to assume that Allport laid the ground work for the big five?
Can a person, with a dominant phlegmatic temperament (introverted), develop a Extraversion traits? Thank you.
