    Did anyone else notice that while tasting the Gold Brianna asked Daniel if they were already mouthing it, and Daniel said "yeah". This is a legitimate acknowledgment by Daniel that "mouthing" is in fact a real word. Sorry Daniel, you lost the bet, you owe Rex that fancy lunch now.

      I am here to defend Daniel and say that his "yeah" was just a very delayed and late response to Rex saying "There's a balance to it I think" you can tell by the intonation of his voice. He goes "yyyyeeaaah" drawn out because he is implying that he only partially agrees with Rex's statement. It took him longer to respond because he was tasting the Gold. I guarantee his mind didn't even process Brianna say he mouthed it because he was focusing on the tasting and the last thing he heard before drinking it was what Rex had asserted. Sincerely, Daniel's legal council

    Oh, this episode is so my jam. Several years ago, I was designated to cook at a friends get-together and while in the middle of stirring a roux, said friend ask me what I wanted to drink. I said my usual, a stiff pore of Scotch over packed ice with just a teeny splash of water. He delivered and when I sipped said Scotch while still focusing on stirring the roux, I said to him, “You son of a bitch, I don’t deserve Blue Label.”

    • @guillelazza
      @guillelazza ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not about picking it out, its just that the guys are bourbon drinkers for the most part and like something that bites back and 40% abv smoothed out blended scotch simply didn't do it for them

    What a fun video. It's wild that Red performed as well as it did. I've done two blind tastings of the JW line. Both times, I liked Platinum (18) the best, and Blue the second best. Green & Gold performed well. Most interesting was the 2xBlack, which got last at one tasting, and got 3rd place the other tasting. Doing more than one blind tasting of the same stuff taught me that your palate and preferences really do change on different days.

    I have never been much of a fan of JW, but most of my exposure has been to Black. I did have an acquaintance treat me to some Blue one evening and was internally conflicted that I did not really enjoy what was a presumably top shelf offering. I do have a bottle of Gold Reserve that was gifted to me and I find it at least reasonable, and I do like the Game of Thrones white/blue bottle. I would consider a bottle of Green but it runs the same price as Dalmore and Oban in my area so not much chance of that happening. Nice video!

    Blind tasting is actually soo entertaining! Thank you guys. You're who I'm discovering whiskey with!
    A fun story about JW.
    My partners dad used to drink red label quite often. He poured me some during our early days to "test" whether I liked whiskey (or man enough) I assume, but I found it rough and not worth it. I explained that I've had JW gold and that in contrast it's hard to drink red label but to no avail.
    I bought him a bottle of gold label that year and since then, he has not bought or drank red label again. In fact, gold is the only one he will drink of JW :)

      Blue is absurdly overrated and overpriced for what it is. My local whisky bar used to have a flight of trying half-ounces of 3 high-end bottles to learn about them ... I'm pretty sure they just had that to educate people against Blue, because comparing it to Macallan 18 or Highland Park 18 really drove home the point that it has no business retailing for quite a bit more than them.

I enjoyed the smoother less gum bitey elements of Blue a lot, it's kinda like it evaps on your tongue. The Green is nice, but I rarely use it unless it's like Christmas time, colder outside. And and the Red makes my nose tingle.

    That was so interesting to see for me as I really enjoy JW and always return to it after a few single malts. The only surprise to me really was that the red label ended up so high, however the explanation made total sense. Green and platinum also are my two favorites. And blue is not a surprise at all. I had the exact same feeling the one time I tried it. Since I felt like I became a fan of JW I wanted to experience what the "top of the line" tastes like and got myself a small bottle. And it was an utter disappointment. Not because it would be bad, but it was not as good as green and platinum and waaaay too expensive for what it delivered.

      The beat advice I could give is to keep trying, and if you already have multiple bottles, try mixing them up and trying to guess which is which (for example, have someone else pour a glass of a random bottle and try to figure out what they poured) and eventually you'll get there. I'm still trying to find stuff other people find easily, and I just started drinking 2 years ago. But there is nothing like that first time you get a flavor!! Johnnie Walker Double-Black was my first Scotch experience, and all I can say is that looking back I feel like I went straight for the jugular with Scotch. I hated it. It was too bitter and had this awful crushed velvet taste that put me off Scotch for awhile. Granted, I was coming from bourbon, which is way sweeter tasting, and so the bitterness of the smoked peat in Scotch threw me for a loop, doubly so since the Double-Black is all about amplifying those qualities in the whisky. Eventually I was persuaded to buy some Chivas Regal since I wanted to give another Scotch brand a go, and while I don't think Scotch is going to replace bourbon for my go-to whiskey, I did love the Chivas, which brought me back to trying JW's Red Label, which is still motor oil compared to good whisky, but I think if I were to try Double-Black again I might actually like it.
    Point is, start with something that balances the sweetness of bourbon with the smoky peat flavor of Scotch, otherwise you might end up hating it like I did the first time I drank it.

    A quick question I can't seem to find an answer for. Once you decant a whisky, Rum or brandy from the wood cask, does it still continue to to age and change its flavor & nose?

  • @manicallyhappy
    @manicallyhappy ปีที่แล้ว

    I tasted the Double Black when it first came out and it had some really nice Bourbon notes, both on the nosing and the "mouthing". I rebought a bottle a few years later and either my flavor profile changed or it did. It lost almost everything and the finish was terrible. I've never been a fan of the Blue label, it didn't match my flavor profile at all. I will have to try the Green and Platinum now though. For research purposes!!

    The appeal of Blue, aside from the marketing, is its "smoothness"; that boringness they mentioned. It is not a bottle for people who like whiskey. Is it a bottle for people who rarely drink whiskey to have something with no burn or overpowering nose or mouth feel. Blue is essentially a gateway scotch for wealthy or pretentious people who regularly drink vodka. Just my opinion. YMMV.

    I've tried red, black, green and gold. and also thought green was the best of them, now I want to try platinum as you had pretty much the same opinion about the other 4 as I did. black was the worst and green the best for me

    Cool. Double black has always been my least favourite too. By a long way. Next would be red, then blue. Then black label, which I always have a bottle at home as one of my essentials, since it is priced fairly well and works well both as a mixer and as an easy sipper. Next up the ranks I'd have gold label, then 18 y/o, then green gets the win (and also a permanent place on my shelf). Overall somewhat consistent with your findings, you magnificent bastards.

    My favorite is the OG gold 18 year (not the reserve they had for this one), followed closely by the platinum. The blue was smooth but not really enjoyable for me, so I can see why they put it so far back. The gold reserve is not nearly as good as the og Gold, but I agree on middle of the pack. The black I used to use for mixed drinks when I first started, would probably find it tough to go back to. Didn't really care for green, it was to peaty for my taste.

    We've tried Black, Red and I think we got a sample of Double Black, and we went with Red. We might consider Green but we can't find Platinum around here so that'd be our limit.

    The Blue Label was among the first bottles of whiskey that I tasted when I was young. It was mind-blowing then. But after years of trying different brands and varieties, Blue Label is, like you guys said, boring.
    I would visualise the whiskey when I was tasting them, and Blue Label for me is a beauty queen: elegant, nice makeup, perfect etiquette, socialising. But that's that. You would enjoy the presence of her, but she is easily forgotten. I think Blue Label is a nice gateway to the whiskey world, but not the product that people who take whiskey seriously would desire.

    Howdy tribe, my second ever scotch, but almost had in tandem with glenmorrangie 10, was black walker but it doesn't resonate with me. Perhaps it's the peat because on the black I mostly taste just a thick lingering smoke and a bit of earthy malty funk. I think the smoke isn't for me (disclaimer that I do smoke cigars on occasion but not super full strength ones)
