I enjoyed hearing all the Rihannon pronunciations. This one is one of the top Scotches on my wishlist. It’s $105 USD and still available. Glad it was reviewed well and one of these days I’ll buy it.
Another GR8 review. Fantastic 17 minutes really relaxed me. Thank you. Only welsh whisky i hqve had was this madeira finish. I wasnt impresed. I need to give Penderyn 2nd chance and try some other good expression. 2days one sounds tempting. Slàinte 😁🥂🙋🏻♂️
Great to hear 🙂 although I like the Madeira Finish, there are better Penderyns. Maybe worth trying a different one. I don't know if it's available to you but Penderyn do sell 3x50ml and 3x200ml gift sets. A very nice way to try three different whiskies without risking too much money 👍 Cheers 🥃
Cracking good review all round. Well done for getting a bottle. My mother got me another as a Christmas present just passed. She also gave me a bottle of Penderyn's Hiraeth, another Icon's of Wales bottling worth getting. It's pure ex-bourbon (46%) and like the Rhiannon it's well made. My only gripe is the price which I don't think is justified. Ex-bourbon NAS and not cask strength over £50? It's very nice though. I think it largely plays out to some of my issues with Penderyn. They might push the boat out a bit with the Icons series but that's because they know Welsh people will lap up anything celebrating Welsh culture. It's a brilliantly realised marketing exercise which we enjoy. However, any of those expressions bottled at 46% have cost more than £50 a bottle, as though 46% abv is some kind of benchmark. When they are 43%, like the recent Yma o Hyd, our national anthem no less, they are reduced to about £40 - for a 43% NAS. I'm simply not excited about buying that bottle. PENDERYN - I love you guys but please sort this out. The Icons of Wales series should be bottled at a minimum of 46%. It is a huge disappointment to me that I'm no longer interested in buying this series below 46%. These bottles should have some WOW factor and by going back to 43% you give the impression that you think you can flog these bottles to big Welsh hearts in our visitor centres. Why bottle Yma o Hyd at 43%? Furthermore, I think it's time to stop messing around with the 41% of Legend and Myth and put them up to 43% without increasing the price. Anyway (large deep breath), back to Rhiannon. A fine all round package and intelligent choice. The woman on the box and bottle is a mythical being of course. Every man wants her but she is strong and elusive. She reminds me of Bizet's 'Carmen' but with an Arthurian touch. Men are attracted like moths to the flame. Carmen is pure flame but Rhiannon is ethereal. Rhiannon is such a beautiful name. I love what you say about our mythology and you are quite right. Her name burns deep into our past. I have known two Rhiannon's in my life. One with that name and one (not her name) that adherers to my description. Final word is about women and whisky. For years it was slightly old fart territory and then macho man stuff. It's a drink at the end of the day and women can enjoy it just as much as men. Penderyn's master blender is a woman (Polish if I remember correctly - by no means certain). I have to be honest though. Although women should enjoy whisky as much as men that's not borne out by the TH-cam figures. I think they are just not geeky enough in the same numbers. I've just spent an hour writing this. WT
Im really appreciate for this hard work done for us. This kind of knowlege is a bonus for every whisky lover especially when is served by Welsh origin. Cheers 😁🥂🙋🏻♂️
It sounds like your house might have seen the most complete collection of Penderyns outside of the distillery 😉 I do like what I've seen of the Icons of Wales series so far. It's very well done and I'd definitely look into it again in future. Expensive maybe but it's a nice thing for Wales and Penderyn to have. Fully agreed that any special bottlings need to be at least 46%. And yeah... Penderyn Legend at 41%... why? Such an odd choice of ABV and does little more than draw attention to the low strength. The only other 41%er I can think of is Lidl's Abrachan. Which... has massive potential for improvement 😉 I've never tried Penderyn Legend. Given the strength, I can't think of a good reason to when the Madeira Finish is 46% and often only slightly more expensive... I think you're right about men being predisposed to getting geeky. We are often over-represented on the Internet because we're just more inclined to rattle on about things at length for no purpose other than the joy of it.... ahem... where was I? 🙂 😉 Cheers 🥃
What you were explaining about that import tax stuff in the beginning really applies to me. Since Finland has this monopoly government owned alcohol store which sets the prices to whatever they want and no one else is allowed to sell whisky here. For example I can't buy any whisky from specialty shops or super markets etc. Often I watch whisky reviews from you or gwhisky etc and I'm thinking "man I really wanna try this one" then of course they don't even sell it here and only option is to buy it from Germany ordering it online pay for shipping and possibly import tax thanks to Finland's new alcohol law they figured they lose too much money because people order from online everyone should pay taxes to Finland as well. Recently my friend went to Scotland and I gave him list of whiskies to look out for to buy. Some Springbank, bunnahabhain cask strenght, laphroaig cask strenght, port charlotte PAC, OLC, etc. stuff you can't find here at all. He visited few whisky speciality shops there of course they were all sold out there but he found bunnahabhain abhainn araig - feis ile 2022 I though why not I can't get it here and the price seemed fine it was 90£ or something like that. Then I remembered you said in the review it's bit over priced for what it is but I didn't regret getting bottle of this coz the price is pretty much on the level what everything else is here these standard expressions. Often when I watch reviews and someone says it's nice and cheap in UK/Scotland you pretty much need to add 30-40€ to the price and you get what's it going for here in my store.
Hi SmirGel. It sounds pretty tough to be a whisky enthusiast in Finland. People in the UK complain about how much tax we pay on alcohol but really we're very lucky. I'm glad you're enjoying that Bunna Feis bottling. Yeah, I do think it's overpriced (here) at 2-3 times the price of what we pay for Bunna 12. But if it's the same price then why not! Cheers 🥃
@@WhiskyLock I¨m a Brit living in Finland and usually try and get a couple of bottles when i visit my mum to bring back to Finland. My whisky budget has really shrunk in the last few years but at least i get to 'taste' stuff through your channel :) keep up the good work. Actually Alko (lol that name) does do orders (from other Alkos) and even has some stuff like Bruichladdich Octomore - well at least here in Kokkola.
😂 Thanks. Wales in particular is a very ancient and historical place. Some describe the Welsh as the 'original' inhabitants of the British Isles 🏴
@@WhiskyLock The new drwgon range was nice. The Myth is finished in a madeira cask, that was 2nd use after the flagship Penderyn. So it is softer and has more subtle tones. I bought 9ne
Great review WL. I've had the entry level Penderyn Legend. Their profile seems rather rounded and easier on the palate. This Rhiannon sounds like something I would give a try if it shows up in my market. The advantage the consumers have these days is now you get to try whiskies from all around the world.
Definitely a gentle style of whisky. I haven't had Legend. It has also appeared in supermarkets now but the lower ABV has always put me off. Especially when the Madeira finish regularly appears under £30 🙂
@@Rohit_M I believe I paid around £50-55 for my Rhiannon and then another £15-20 in fees. I probably wouldn't have bothered if I had known (and likely won't buy from Europe again) but at least it is good. I'd recommend trying the Madeira finish first if you can though 👍
As a semi-Welshman myself, I've patronised some Penderyns and quite liked them. But I wish they would put out an age-stated range. In contrast, I'm still recovering from the flavour profile of the Aber Falls 40%ABV that befell me on St David's Day last week. Thanks for the sentiments on 'whisky for everyone', totally agreed.
At first I read that as semi-professional Welshman. Like you only dabble in it at the weekend 😂 it's great that Wales has Penderyn. Really nice that every region of the British Isles is well represented on the whisky scene now. Agree that it would be great to try some age stated stuff from them. I'm undecided as to whether it would be worthwhile but I'd love to know what an 18yo Penderyn would be like. Some surely exists somewhere! I had a bottle of 40% Aber Falls. I think it shows promise but agreed that it is weird stuff 😂 it's really the kind of whisky that Scotland doesn't make anymore. It does remind me of some old Hillside bottlings from many years ago though. Grassy and herbal and weird. They'll figure it out 🙂
Ha - I got that bottling too. Was a present from a friend. Was pleasently surprised although I'm not the biggest Penderyn fan bc their newmake is just too round/soft for my taste. And yeah - we have the same problems regarding ordering bottles from the UK... who would have thought... 🙄
Nice, I'm glad someone else has this. Being a fairly rare and old bottle there's probably only a handful able to taste along. Penderyn definitely has a rounded and light style. I like what they're doing though and I'm optimistic that they'll continue to release good stuff. I apologise on behalf of 51.9% of my countrymen 😣
@@WhiskyLock You're probably right. Absolutely! It's great that they are doing something a bit different. SMWS releases quite a lot of Penderyn SC expressions (at CS). I'm curious to try one. :-) ^^ - let's wait and see what the future brings
