    I like how fair this test is because the detectors are the same brand and series.

    Everything you say in the video is true. But you are leaving out some facts. Ionization alarms are much more prone to false alarms, especially from cooking, than photoelectric. After experiencing multiple false alarms, people often unplug the smoke alarms to keep them from annoying them. Then, in a real fire, without a working alarm - you die. These same people, if they get photoelectric alarms would get far fewer false alarms, and therefore would not disable the alarms, and then in a real fire they would function properly and they would not die. In summary - get a photoelectric alarm and you are less likely to die in a fire.

      In the UK (where I am) photo electric smoke alarms are more widely used than ionisation. Also you left out (as you put it) the fact that when the battery goes low, the detector will "chirp" I find THIS is the most common reason for people to disable smoke alarms. Even mains operated have battery back up that will chirp when it (The battery) gets too low.

      Energizer makes a lithium battery in both 9v and AA that can be used in most smoke alarms instead of using alkaline batteries. This way the battery may last the life of the alarm and never need to be replaced until you replace the entire alarm after 10 years. Perhaps this is the best solution to the "chirp" issue that you say may lead to disabled alarms?

      @bluecylinder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are not wrong, energiser do make a lithium battery, but I feel I should point out that folk would only put an expensive battery in when the "free one" (that came with the detector) runs low, then they will just take the detector down..................
      Although a lithium battery will last longer, it may not last 10 years in all detectors and so will start beeping so the detector will be taken down......

    Yes, I agree with a flame detector, you buy me one and I will test it.

    @flamesecureUK Thanks, but what is a CO2 detector?

  • @KibouAoizoraVT

    Ionization alarms are for flaming 🔥 and photoelectric detect slow smoldering fires but you need both

    What models are thoes smoke detectors I want to buy one, are the connected to a panel?

    • @George_M55729
      @George_M55729 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are Apollo detectors. you can get them off eBay and conventional detectors [ones without buttons on the back of the detector] can be operated on batteries.

  • @bluecylinder

    You said "You missed heat and rate rise" To that I would say
    READ THE TITLE AGAIN! it clearly says "Smoke detector types"
    Fixed and rate of rise are HEAT detectors.

    It seems that the ion was faster at detecting the oil, and it was alarmed at the same time as the optical at the begining. You sure optical is better?

    • @BukuiZhao
      @BukuiZhao ปีที่แล้ว

      Ion is also much more prone to false alarm, not to mention

  • @eggle100
    @eggle100 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where can I buy one ? And can you not get alarms that make the same noise but are mains or battery operated ?

    • @TDSWar
      @TDSWar ปีที่แล้ว

      These are mains operated I think, the Roshni sounders sound similar to these but I think those are powered by the mains too

    • @bluecylinder
      @bluecylinder  ปีที่แล้ว

      You think wrong. They are connected to a 24v fire alarm panel, not mains

    • @TDSWar
      @TDSWar ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bluecylinder they mean, are they battery backup or powered by the mains?

  • @bluecylinder
    @bluecylinder  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Save your money, watch my videos. The detectors are for a proper Fire Alarm, they are connected to a proper Fire Alarm Panel, they do not work on their own.
    Watch my other videos and you can see the panels etc.

    Did anyone notice that for the first test the optical and ionisation both activated at the same time

    • @archiebrown7173
      @archiebrown7173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Optical activated a few seconds before

    • @TDSWar
      @TDSWar ปีที่แล้ว

      No it didn’t the Optical one went off first, then a few seconds later the ion did (it was reversed in the next test)

  • @mateuszszten2577
    @mateuszszten2577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ion one, is better for kitchens

  • @TDSWar
    @TDSWar ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn’t the Optical alarm activate on the Oil Test? Only the Ion one went off
    Edit: I was expecting the Ion one to go off, and then set off the optical one

    You don't. You connect the smoke detector to the fire alarm panel.
    Depending on the panel depends how you connect the detector, but most are strait forward. Join the forum then you can post pictures.

    ion and optical... what's the difference...?

    • @bluecylinder
      @bluecylinder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You ask what is the difference between optical and ionisation smoke detectors. There are lots of videos out there that show you, but in short, ion uses radioactive material (americium 241) to detect smoke particles and optical uses infra-red light to detect smoke particles.

    • @circuitprotector8693
      @circuitprotector8693 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      is this radiation harmful?

    • @bluecylinder
      @bluecylinder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All radiation is harmful .........................if you have enough of it. If it was THAT harmful they would not use it in smoke detectors

  • @bluecylinder
    @bluecylinder  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A message from me.
    Its nice of you to leave comments (Good or bad, but not advertising) but please don't ask can I make a video of (For example) a speaking smoke alarm (They do exist) the fact is I don't have much money left to buy things to test, its not that I don't want to make more videos, its the fact the interesting things to watch cost money.

    Can't optical sensor see flames just as well?...it is heat...

    • @bluecylinder
      @bluecylinder  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Collin Bru You ask can't optical sensor see flames just as well, after all, flames produce heat.
      You have answered your own question. You rightly said flames produce heat, but these are SMOKE detectors, not heat detectors.

  • @Andymonty27
    @Andymonty27 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You missed heat and rate rise ;)

  • @bluecylinder
    @bluecylinder  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @FireControl9000: Guess again.
    I get fed up with people who say (you didn't) CO2 is carbon MONOXIDE its NOT, its carbon DIOXIDE. Carbon MONOXIDE is CO.
    Carbon DIOXIDE CO2 is what you find in fire extinguishers.
    Carbon MONOXIDE CO is given off by unburnt fuel.
