USSF is at the core of every failure. GGG is just the puppet they wanted to hire to promote MLS. Players will say they support the coach because they want to keep their starting spots and stay in a comfort zone.
This player pool did have a couple of games where everything clicked. '23 Nation's League. The games where Berhalter wasn't coaching. In those 4 games, the players just took care of business, We weren't making mistakes because we weren't passing the ball along our backline. We were attacking. In those 4 games, USMNT outscored the opponents 13-1. El Salvador and Canada were 2 of those games and Gregg has us struggling against those teams. Laso, In those 4 games, Gio was at the 10
It's good to hear some realistic USA fans. One thing i have noticed about the media coverage around the USA team is that they're being overhyped. Same thing that the English press do with the England team, no way should England have been favourites heading into the Euros. I've seen Espn, Fox, and numerous podcast with ex USA players in them, where they're talking about the USA getting to the final and being one of the favourites. Putting that level of unrealistic expectations on a team isn't going to help anything. Yes, Berhalter isn't a great manager and really needs to go, but outside pressure never helps.
@@MLSMovescorrect, but also don’t get it twisted as if Klopp takes this same talent pool and beats Uruguay. We have one player who could make their XI… one!
This current team is not that bad but the numbers and data show that they fall short of the Donovan/Dempsey/Howard era. I believe that because they play in Europe leagues, fans confuse and conflate that with ‘they must be good’. CONCACAF has 6 “better” teams - Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Panama, Canada (lately) and throw in Jamaica. This current USMNT squad has the worst away record in all of CONCACAF which is masked by playing the overwhelming majority, if not all, major tournaments on US soil. Also, this team doesn’t have a win against a top 20 team not Mexico who’s football soccer is an absolute chaotic mess. And Panama, it’s the USA’s cryptonite. - add in playing Costa Rica in Costa Rica. Add Jamaica who committed an own goal which is how the USA got the push for Copa America qualification. To top it off, none of this is even my or “an” opinion which gets masked by the fact that all of these players play in “Europe”. I do think Pulisic is a very good player.
A managers job is to analyze the player pool and develop strategies that best utilize the pools strengths while minimizing the weaknesses. Tactics and Formations often have to change based on opponent or circumstances (injuries, cards, weather, etc...). Gregg was unable to do any of this; he was to married to a single formation with tactics overly scripted and predictable. They need to hire a coach who can help solidify the defense by holding people accountable and give more freedom to players in the attacking 3rd. The coach needs to take control of the team to the point that no-one takes for granted their place in the team. Who that coach should be is difficult to say. What I can say is it can't be someone currently within USSF, someone who has has experience (more than 5 years), and someone who isn't given a long term contract. Give them through 2026 WC, and then honestly evaluate them for an extension if they reach tangible goals.
Greg had a somewhat ok run through the World Cup. With the drama that unfolded there and the completion of the cycle he should have been thanked for his service. Re-hiring him was psychotic. The players are wildly overrated. Our second best player can’t get on the field for a team in a relegation battle.
I’m glad some of your discussion has actually begun to focus on the players. It’s clear the American team has squeezed all the juice they can from Berhalter. He should go. But, I am sick of hearing that we have a “golden generation” of the best group of players in American history…who just never seem to rise to the challenge because of the coach . To my eyes, that isn’t true. Gregg is part of the problem, but on the other hand, a lot of these guys are mediocre. Look at passing stats or any of the stats. Even at club level. The quality is just not there…at least with anything close to consistency. I hope it doesn’t need to be said, but saying this does not give me any pleasure.
Movement off the ball wasn't great so players had little time to receive and made poor decisions in which they lost possession. Players weren't as good as those on other teams and were not equipped to play toe to toe and needed a strategy that recognized this. Pulisic trying to dribble thru three defenders "to make something happen" which mostly lead to coughing up the ball was the epitome of US soccer. I don't mind passing back if you are trying to lull the other team and when you get the right change of field favorable to pounce. "If" we were trying to win on set pieces it didn't seem we were in synch and for the most part our opponents defended better than we delivered.
USMNT just doesn't have the talent ppl think. It looked to me that UY wasn't really trying. Almost like they were in cruise control and we couldn't do anything about it.
what can we expect from Matt Crocker and the USSF board? Crocker's last "extensive review and world wide search" led to nearly unanimous board approval for Gregg's rehire. this is who they are. unless they pleasantly surprise us we have got to boycott USSF, which includes boycotting USSF sponsors
I 100% think the player that was holding people accountable was Brooks, and because he wasn’t GGG’s golden child likely because he was holding the coach accountable as well was Brooks. Which is a guess on my part, but if you read between the lines, and when I hear rumors that the “leadership” council voted him out etc, it sure would fit.
I was at the Bolivia game and aside from the two goals and a few chances the US barely did anything and were so sloppy. They constantly passed to no one or out of bounds for no reason. Seemed like they had no plan, chemistry, or ambition.
With that being said, our best athletes don't pursue a lot of sports in our country, yet we still dominate in the Olympics. There is something systemically wrong with soccer development in our country. Also remember; players like Messi, Yamal, Endrick, Luis Diaz, etc would not be prime American sporting athletes. My dad wasn't a soccer player and knew nothing about soccer, but he coached my soccer teams and we were always one of the best teams. There was a game where I got frustrated at 2 players who were teasing me by playing it back and forth back and forth and I lashed out. Going in for a hard tackle. The ref didn't call it a foul but my dad saw that and immediately called for a timeout and subbed me immediately and benched for the entire game.
