Correct but a vast amount was historically correct. It was exactly the contradiction between historically correct and fantasy and modern that resulted in a kind of alienation that made the series so fascinating.
Of course it is not historically correct, it has a black Duke. I don't think the aim of the show was to be historically as it was made for entertainment and not a documentary.
This show isn't trying to be Historically accurate... That's obviously in the first episodes when they have classical covers of modern songs like "Thank you, Next" by Ariana Grand, "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5, or "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish. I personally don't think the choice to cast people of color needs to be defended! The creators want to tell a modern story in a Regency setting. The show producers explanated the reasoning for the diverse casting is that Queen Charlotte elevated certain African American families to nobility, which led to the aristocracy being much more diverse than they might have been in actual history. Is this true ABSOLUTELY not! This is a modern drama... Keyword being modern! We're living in a new diversity time where a woman of African American/South Asian decent became vice president! Things are changing. Diversity is important. If you are judging the show SOLELY on the fact it showcases people of color in a position other than slaves/housekeepers than maybe you need to reflect on that.
Some people call it "blackwashing" but it is really just good old whitewashing and much more sinister than it seems at first glance. People of colour did not come to the British isles as stone-age hunters, they were kidnapped from their land and sold into slavery. Presenting the Regency period as a diverse fairy tale when the slave trade held up most of the economy is problematic at the least. It lets the slaving empire off the hook. Surprisingly, the struggles of (white) women were deemed worthy though to show where the struggle of other races were made non existent... The rabbit hole is deep. Perhaps it would be good to call the show "a fable". Remember Streets of Fire?
with uchronia we can do whatever we want starting from an existing period of our time so i don't see the problem some people have with blacks and whites being equals. It even adds good vibes and i loved it ^^ Well i know this period was really hard and dark but the drama isn't about historical accuracy. Some people might miss it but it brings something new i think
I agree with all you've said. It's a modern drama (sets in fictional old times, but still modern). But I see the other side as well. Why do they compare this to "Pride and prejudice" saying P&P was JUST white? And that's the flaw? Well, P&P is a period drama. Written by Austen who actually lived in that time. I find it strange that on one side they have to defend themselves bcos of diversity , but in the same time looks like P&P needs to defend itself as well, bcos it's historically accurate.
I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a documentary or something historically accurate then this is not it. But if you know that this is modern version and you want to enjoy a good plot and character development in a romance series then you"ll definitely like this show.

it's funny how people really don't understand just how much goes into doing a production, whether it's theater, movies or tv. Having worked on all three as a tech, I can attest to the fact that the work is NOT glamorous. In one of my first films as an art department intern, one of my jobs was hosing down all the cement exteriors (a process called wet-downs) because cement looks better when it's wet. Three in the morning, freezing cold, doing wet downs, I remember thinking, well, here's the glamour folks. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes. A play that runs for two weeks takes MONTHS to not only rehearse, but to build, paint, costume, prop, and light (all of which I've done). Anyone, from actors to techs, knows that a commitment to a show is going to be hard work. Those scenes in the rain with Daphne and Simon? Those are HARD to film. They shoot over and over, so after each take the actors have to be dried off, re-costumed and made up and restyled. The set has to be reset. It's usually freezing cold. Regency costumes aren’t uncomfortable unless you’re doing things like tight lacing and not wearing shifts like they do...which aren’t actually historically accurate. Regency was one of the more comfortable fashion trends. Also there are 8 books not 11. 8 siblings, 8 books. The second epilogues are added to the original books in the newest editions not a separate book.
I agree. Stays look to me like a balcony bra, just with a bask, which make you stand straight. I was wondering though why only Daphne and few other women had nice simple dresses and reasonable accessories and hair. And most of the "villains" like the Featherington family or the blonde one were wearing very tacky clothes and hairstyles. It just seemed unreasonable and make them look way too silly. It's sort of childish in my opinion to design those characters like that as it by first glance immediately tells you who to root for. Edit: It didn't sit with me well how much they emphasized the fact that Daphne way prettier than Cressida (or any other ladies). And they are like both very pretty?? I thought we sort of moved on from valuing women based on their looks...
@@user-ok4xb1rd9f I think I remember seeing a video on how the costume designer intentionally designed the Featheringtons as tacky to represent them being people of 'new wealth' trying to fit in the upper class scene, in contrast to the Bridgertons whom come from a long line of wealth historically. :)
@@user-ok4xb1rd9f its not the show that chose to establish Daphne as pretty. It wouldve been the books that first did that Usually in romance novels like these they always use terminology like that, e.g. Belle of the ball, etc. So its not the writers who are pitting women against each other, its literally just how the books write the characters. I've read so many romance novels as a teen and this is a very common description for the main female protagonist especially in period piece novels from those eras.
I want to go back and reread all the eight books again. For one the TV production is a fantasy world. But it would be great to remember the stories. Edit: One other thing I found it to be unrealistic was that the Featherington's might have been nouveau riche but they would've followed the norms and etiquette of the time strictly not to be singled out. So maybe the producers failed the Featheringtons not the designer.
I think the point is _new money_ never perceive themselves as what they are,so it is a display of 'look at us,we can pay for clothes, jewelry and more,we are just like you, accept us'.Also Mrs feathering bad taste in clothes was very clear in the books🤣
@@jimerodriguez8332 yes the woman doesn't look good in some colors but that doesn't mean they dressed gaudy, or too "peacockish". New money does not mean hill billy in Regency era.
A neighbor told me about this series and said it was so good. I watched the first episode and got hooked back to back hours on Netflix....loved it very much
I have nothing but praise for the whole production especially the actors, who had to put in so much prep to pull this off. It is especially important because the regency reomance genre has a huge following so that the viewers who have extensive knowledge of this period would readily pick up any significant flaws in the actors portrayals especially of the cultural attitudes and mores of the time period. The only thing I felt was off was explaining Madame Delacroix's absence was ascribed to a trip to France, whom Britain was at war with at the time so this trip was unlikely. Defeat of the French Army and Napoleon's first exile to Elba is only a year away so the battles are really heating up by 1813. On the other hand Colin's trip to Greece was believable since they were not participating. Nonetheless any travel abroad was risky given the continental war in progress where the majority of battles occurred in Spain. Another hazard was the French navy's presence and its threat to British shipping let alone ships carrying passengers as well as cargo. I especially appreciated Daphne's quip to the prince that he had never seen what it was like at the modiste when there was a silk shortage because during this time muslin became all the rage d/t trade being curtailed with France, where the majority of silk was obtained. Muslin was imported from India I believe. The top selling regency romance novels are usually well researched but setting that aside the novels of Jane Austin and. Georgette Heyer have set the standard for this period. In fact I heard that Heyer's Infamous Army was required reading or Sandhurst cadets because of her accuracy in describing the Battle of Waterloo and the military events that led up to it, as well as comments that the real life characters made at the time.
Tbh Daphne’s story is really interesting also Eloise and beside these 2 I also think Penelope is very interesting there must be something very special and behind the secret about Penelope. Sorry I don’t like the other story but these 3 really catch my eyes and make me wanna follow the series
Exactly!! Unless the movie or show is showing a non-fictional historical event where race is an important factor I hope they start making more shows and movies with diverse casts
OMG!!!! I've only watched Simon and daphne's story but it was so familiar and when the narrator showed the book series . I remembered that I've read it already. Omg I'm so excited
The best depiction of the book, I always like the books better because it just gives you the feels and in depth more then on screen 😉 (book readers) I’m sure you know what I mean, anyways loved it gave me the same feels. Very well made and done. 👏🏽👏🏽🤎🤍
Netflix is well known for saying they don't go beyond 4 seasons bc ongoing shows don't bring new subscribers. And Shonda Rhimes has other things she has in scope for her deal with them so I hope they are prepared to double up on the book material for subsequent season's.
Well if my opinion means anything. I watched the whole season yesterday and I started it again today. I love this show almost as much as I love Anne with an e.
Loved this show hope there are many more episodes. Rege and Phoebe were great and so romantic. The story line was every enjoyable and the diversity of the people. The cloths, scenery and acting was great. We need this during this time of the Covid and negativity.
OMG Im in love, no im obsessed with the show and it’s Potential. Whoever came up with this is a Genius... love , romance, dramas, intelligent. It’s glamorous and down to earth all at the same time. It takes you away from reality without being too unrealistic and that’s an art in itself. For season two I hope we see characters bond on a deeper level, the same beautiful level of equality supported by a diverse cast. I love that race isn’t too much of a topic in this as I can imagine, we’re all sick of hearing and reading about it in real life, we don’t need a constant reminder of this. This is a good start to unite humanity - black white or whatever ... in this Show we are seeing kind , flawed and real people who are looking for love , success or simply finding themselves and that is the best recipe for a good show! I hope they add some beautiful new songs too transformed into the sound of that era... bring on Season two and I wouldn’t mind a more complex story line but for the first season this was everything
I loved this series, and I'm very excited that we're getting another season! I mean, we all pretty much knew it was coming, so I'm happy Netflix made the announcement already, instead of keeping us hanging. 🤣🤣
Ok, firstly the actor who plays the Duke is Zimbabwean not British. And the reason the costumes are hot is they weren't made from natural fabrics. Also the Season in London would have mostly been in the winter as it was about parliament.
Hm, I think it's more a commentary on how women of higher status than most of Jane Austen's characters didn't solely have to depend on marriage to stay alive. Being a spinster for Eloise, by example, would be totally possible because her family could afford to maintain her.
It's one of my favorite books series. I will say they changed some of the characters relations. But I liked how they handled it. The only thing I didn't like was Colin falling for Marina. That never happened in any part of the series. Colin travels too much to fall for anyone. Marina was mentioned briefly but she was barely brought up until "to sir Philip, with love" and it was to explain stuff in the book. So that really confused me. Overall I liked it.
It wouldn't be fair because Anthony wasn't a background character in their story. I think they need more than 8 episodes a season if they plan on adding more to the cast
I know some people don’t want Simon and daphne to be background characters, but they probably will be in the next seasons. Personally I’m looking forward to see more of the other characters and follow there stories. After all the books focused on one Bridgerton at a time.
It's definitely worth the hard work to produce a superb project. More exposure, experience and $$$ for everyone involved in making the project a tremendous success!
I really hope they do all the books I just started them and even after watching one season I want to know how all the siblings grow up and fare. I did hear somewhere that a lot of netflix originals don't make it past 3 season or 30 episodes even if they are getting great reviews, because it doesn't bring new subscribers and they have to pay the cast and crew more. I hope that doesn't happen 🤞🤞
Actually, there are some studies on how much ethnic diversity was in England around this time. It was not usual for a non-European to have high status, but not impossible. Bridgerton show (not the books which are as white washed as any Regency romance) is "fantasy" because of ranks, but not because of diversity. Estimated 10-20 percent of English residents were non-white at this time. Pretty interesting stuff to look into. But I do love that the show made Simon and other characters non-European. Really a breath of frsh air.
I love this show I would love to see more of it but even though I'm I'm a consumer that does not mean that they're going to take my opinion into consideration they have to look at their fault online so that being said I have watched the show like five or six times
An intimacy coordinator is a normal thing nowadays for any sex scenes happening on set. Also, a very normal thing actors have to do. Of course they have to be professional about it! 😂

This era is so enchanting and I love love love the show. I couldn’t imagine wearing those dresses, corsets and stockings on a 90 degree day with no AC! Adding to that a woman’s monthly ‘courses’ (curse’s 😉) phew, I can’t even imagine the discomfort! But....it’s beautiful to watch, I adore it!
Hell no, so misogynistic
I loved the colorful dresses that Lady Featherington wore. I thought they were so beautiful. All the costumes looked very well made. This does not look like a low budget project.
OMG! I didn't know that this was a series of books. Now I must read them all.
i am totally obsessed with this show! daphne&simon😍
I am obsessed with this show!!
Me too. Lol. I’ve watched the show 2 times and I will it again until I get tired of it haha
Same same same!!!
I've watched 5 times!! Sad, or what?xx
The sad part is, no matter what the fans want, the Netflix curse will hit. We can’t expect more than 3 - 4 seasons
this series has impressed me the most. its so different and so good. I finished season 2 in 1 day, and i cried because i didnt want it to end. Im so emotionally attached to the cast and the show ❤️
I surprised myself by falling in love with the series and it’s cast.
This SHOW IS A MASTERPIECE! The only SHOW I HAVE SEEN TO EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE NETFLIX SHOW OF VELVET and velvets audience faught Netflix for it not to be removed and it doesn’t compare to BRIDGERTON ! A TRUE MASTERPIECE, we have all already committed to expect the additional stories in future seasons to see the romances of the rest of the Siblings and beloved characters, and I do say beloved because it is a WELL LOVED SHOW AND BRAVO TO NETFLIX FOR PROVIDING US THIS DIAMOND IN THE CURRENT PANDEMIC , as we all await the great writing to continue for the upcoming seasons and TH ANK YOU FOR THE DIVERSITY
Masterpiece? Really? It is incredibly cliche.
And nobody is taking about Queen Charlotte 🥰 she was the black britain queen in the 1800s....give her some credit...
She is really the person who captured me at first. We need more of her!
@@dawnlittle2501 same
She wasn't in the books. Julia Quinn liked the character in the series so much she said she wished that she thought of it.
I liked her too in the series. The actress did a great job, but I hope you know, that the real queen Charlotte wasn't black.
@@nightwatch5513 she was Black using the US way of identifying Black. To every one else she was mixed race. She came from the Black Portuguese Royal line.
Loved this show... not usually into these types of show but I couldn’t get enough of the duke and daphie. I finished it in 3 nights 🙊🙊
I can't wait to see more of Colin and Penelope's romance, just my favorite couple! I hope it doesn't disappoint or change events too much.
Seeing this in 2022 and knowing what happens by the end of season 2... it kinda hurts. Can't wait for season 3
I thought we sort of moved on from valuing women based on their looks...
also, the way regency fashion was you physically couldn't tight lace, and it would be pointless anyway, as your waist wasn't being accentuated
It wouldve been the books that first did that
Usually in romance novels like these they always use terminology like that, e.g. Belle of the ball, etc. So its not the writers who are pitting women against each other, its literally just how the books write the characters. I've read so many romance novels as a teen and this is a very common description for the main female protagonist especially in period piece novels from those eras.
@@notoyaarthur1990I know it's common in romance novels. I guess I am more talking about the show? Since it was promoted as a feminist show?
I have watched this series 4 times in 3 weeks. I'm so excited each time I watch it again. Love love it.
Can't wait for more to come
I want to go back and reread all the eight books again.
I love this show can’t wait already for the second season
Yes, I hope they start shooting soon. It took 9 months to film S1. Luckily, they finished a few weeks before COVID shutdowns.
A neighbor told me about this series and said it was so good.
I watched the first episode and got hooked back to back hours on Netflix....loved it very much
"Much more realistic show"... No, it's not realistic at all! And that's exactly the reason the show is so great!
I binge-watched all 8 episodes in one sitting!
My favourite people Simon and Daphne. Love the show
I love the bright colors of the locations, sets and costumes !
Tbh Daphne’s story is really interesting also Eloise and beside these 2 I also think Penelope is very interesting there must be something very special and behind the secret about Penelope. Sorry I don’t like the other story but these 3 really catch my eyes and make me wanna follow the series
The diverse cast 🥺😭😭😍😍❤️❤️❤️🥵🥵🥵🥰🥰🥰😭😭 I loved it so much 😭😭
Exactly!! Unless the movie or show is showing a non-fictional historical event where race is an important factor I hope they start making more shows and movies with diverse casts
Yes it’s brilliant if it follows ALL the Julia Quinn books ..brilliant books fantastic series ..we need this
OMG!!!! I've only watched Simon and daphne's story but it was so familiar and when the narrator showed the book series . I remembered that I've read it already. Omg I'm so excited
She's like the 2020 Kate Winslet
Yeeeessss
I thought the same as I was watching it. :D

The best depiction of the book, I always like the books better because it just gives you the feels and in depth more then on screen 😉 (book readers) I’m sure you know what I mean, anyways loved it gave me the same feels. Very well made and done. 👏🏽👏🏽🤎🤍
Oh gosh, yes, it’s so worth what they go through to get this wonderful programs!! Blessings!!
Thank you so much for sharing information about intimacy directors! This is such an important role on any set or stage.
I’ve watch this series before and still loved watching over and over again🥰
Netflix is well known for saying they don't go beyond 4 seasons bc ongoing shows don't bring new subscribers. And Shonda Rhimes has other things she has in scope for her deal with them so I hope they are prepared to double up on the book material for subsequent season's.
Netflix has just confirmed season 2 and that it will follow the books and be Anthony's story.
each book is on a different sibling, im excited to see what they do with this and i heard they bought 7 seasons !
Woah that’s cool
Yes it’s worth every penny..I’m patiently waiting for season 2
Well if my opinion means anything. I watched the whole season yesterday and I started it again today. I love this show almost as much as I love Anne with an e.
Ditto I watched the show 3 times before I decided I need to just wait for Season 2 😂
This series is blendid with historical culture and modern thoughts to attract 21st century audience
Tbh
This series really gave a meaningful end of year
I was totally intrigued 🌝
Yeah I can see how some people can see the similarities between Phoebe/Daphne and Kate Winslet (especially her in Titanic. I can see it)
Loved this show hope there are many more episodes. Rege and Phoebe were great and so romantic. The story line was every enjoyable and the diversity of the people. The cloths, scenery and acting was great. We need this during this time of the Covid and negativity.
OMG
Im in love, no im obsessed with the show and it’s Potential.
I watched it 10timed and read the book..so in loved with the character
Can’t wait til season 2.
Yes, defininitly!! The hard work they all put in is surely worth it!! Marvelous, superb and so worth it!! Love the diversity!! Blessings!!
i’m crying rn. i finished this series in less than 24hours AND I’M OBSESSED WITH IT. I’m freakin inlove with rege
Saaamme
You aren’t alone luv!
this show is just SO GOOD
Very glamours show with very good acting ! Their outfits were breathtaking!😇
It's worth it...and to the cast: Bravo!...Bridgerton was splendidly done...and I look forward to season 2
So much practice!! It was totally worth it🥺 its my new fav show
I hope the second season still focuses on a Daphne and simone.
It will not. Anthony and Kate are main characters in Season 2.
This 56 year old southern guy, loved the diversity of the show.
Yes the security of having a role for years is unprecedented. Worth the other side of the coin.
Also the Season in London would have mostly been in the winter as it was about parliament.
actually he was born in the UK and moved the zimbabwe as a child, his father is also English so yes, he is British and Zimbabwean
I loved Bridgerton. I can’t wait for season two 👌
How dare y’all show a video of pride and prejudice’s Lizzy Bennet as you say “all the women are desperate for love”
Lizzy has never heard of it
Hm, I think it's more a commentary on how women of higher status than most of Jane Austen's characters didn't solely have to depend on marriage to stay alive. Being a spinster for Eloise, by example, would be totally possible because her family could afford to maintain her.
Exactly what i tought !!!
They said nearly, so they're acknowledging its not all
I always wonder if ppl hooked up in the name of authenticity during rehearsal.
Interesting show... I love it. Planning on purchasing the books.
If you like bodice rippers, you will probably like them.
I REALLY don’t want daphanie & Hastings to become background characters but I think they will
It wouldn't be fair because Anthony wasn't a background character in their story.
I love it..I can't wait for part 2 I have watched this 4 times..Please bring it on
I really hope they do all the books I just started them and even after watching one season I want to know how all the siblings grow up and fare. I did hear somewhere that a lot of netflix originals don't make it past 3 season or 30 episodes even if they are getting great reviews, because it doesn't bring new subscribers and they have to pay the cast and crew more. I hope that doesn't happen 🤞🤞
their costumes are amazing!!!
Definitely worth it! And I appreciate all of the attention to "details." This series was fantastic!
It's realistic for today's standards, but everyone knows diversity was not a reality back then. Its an awesome piece of escape entertainment.
@Rodrina Ortiz because I can
@Rodrina Ortiz classy.
@@lydiaderhake2532 thank you! That is actually very interesting to go research!!
All the work is worth it! Loved it! Get on to making the next season!
every penny! Bravo Ms. Shonda Rhimes
Yes I think that it is worth all of the crazy stuff because it’s just so amazingly made
I love this show. Can't wait for season 2.
I love this show I would love to see more of it but even though I'm I'm a consumer that does not mean that they're going to take my opinion into consideration they have to look at their fault online so that being said I have watched the show like five or six times
I think it will be exciting to see the new season!
This series is worth it 👌
I'm so made I started this series and now I gotta wait til next year for more...SOOOOO GOOOOOOD!!!
Thank you yes very nice show 🙂 great job 👍👏
Phoebe is a wonderful actress
An intimacy coordinator is a normal thing nowadays for any sex scenes happening on set. Also, a very normal thing actors have to do. Of course they have to be professional about it! 😂
I fall in love to the casts and 5 ⭐️
If she says bridgeRRRtin one more timeeee 😢😢
I just can’t wait for the next season!
Brilliant Series love it congratulations continue please you have a World Audience greeting from Australia 🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺
