The simplest solution I can think of Is just diversify out of your comfort zone of what you usually play, and forget about what you're used to for awhile. Disregard trying new games based off popularity , maybe even purposely seek out niche and obscure experiences.
It's easy. Burnout means, that you do something too much for too long. Play less and you can't get a burnout. What's useful is, stop watching youtube with focus on Games. This also makes you feel overwhelmed.

I've been a bit burnt out with games heavy in cutscenes, lately. I find myself getting increasingly impatient because I want to play games more than watch movies, and I've recently found myself having a lot of fun with more straight-to-the-action games, like Sifu and some old school games.
When i have a burnout id just take a long break then if i see new game trailers i get excited for gaming again if it's something that catches my eyes, then again i play games less and less with each passing year.
Bro how tf youtube reads my mind, I've been struggling with this for months and just yesterday forced myself to play a bit of my backlog. Played like 2 hours of Forza H4, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Crew Motorfest and Lies of P. All of them at the beginning(beat the intro boss in Lies of P and did 1 quest in Odyssey). I have over 600 hundred games just on Xbox and was thinking I HAVE to play something! Now I wake up and this video is in my top recommendations. BTW I've never seen this youtuber. 🤷♂️
In Ferengi culture there is a concept of "the Five Stages of Acquisition: Infatuation, Justification, Appropriation, Obsession, and Resale, you go trough all stages and you move on to the next one.
For me when I start feeling overwhelmed by games, I like to dial things back and play a short, simple game which doesn’t need much brain power. Usually something along the lines of animal crossing.
My advice for game burnout, is try to play a different genre of game that u didn't think u'd like in the past. It may surprise u, if u finally get what the game is all about. This worked for me on elder scrolls: oblivion. U can look up which games got 9's ,9.5's, or 10's, and if there is one that u would've never tried b/c the genre of it didn't fit yur taste, u may be surprised to see u do like it.
this is the reason why i dont play action rpg or action games that require too much button mashing.. i only play turn base rpg, and enjoy the story and simple gameplay.. no burnout, just pure fun....
Im 42. Elden Ring saved my sanity. For the time being. Now everything is just the same and experiences are same ol stuff. Playing for all these years everything feels so stale.
Sometimes your backlog turns out to be not as much as a task, after you start playing them. Like me, I started Kameo Elements of Power, and I absolutely hate the controls, can't play it for longer than 10min, oh well, that's otme game off the list lol. You make a good point though, maybe it is time I had a break from gaming.
Just do something else if youre bored, eventually you'll play the right game weeks, or months later and you'll get that spark back (until you need to take another break)
Something you didn’t mention that worked for me was just to try different genres. I used to play aloooooot of FPS games then I got really burnt out and started trying other genres and in the case of me, I don’t even play FPS games anymore haha.
I just am very selective in what I play now. I don’t try to play or collect them all just the one that really interest me at a time. And more of a casual than anything.
I have no friends (not exxagerating at all, i literally have zero friends) so i dont have the option to talk to a friend about that, nevermind a gaming friend! Tried that, nobody on xbox live wants to be social anymore. And if they are social they are completely toxic, usually "name checks out", too.... dont believe me? Try looking at the roster of ANY community, or anyones gamertags on xbox. Its all hardcore trolling. Nobody takes being happy and having fun seriously anymore.
Something i try to do is incorporate "palate cleansers" between games. My favorite games are horror & action/shooters so after fininshing one Ill play something much less intense (ie Mario, Kirby, Sonic) for a while before starting the next one.
It’s too expensive now, retro is overpriced for the age and possible soon to be malfunctions with the hardware, modern is a plain corprate scam, and pc is, well it’s dirt cheap if you just buy the hardware used locally but, otherwise, kinda expensive

I only focus on collecting retro games as a retired gamers. I cannot let my games get damaged from rotting.

Do what I did and take a literal one-year hiatus! It worked and I've been putting in massive hours on the backlog for the past month.
