How to Apply Tile Adhesive and Set Tiles Properly [Make Your Tiles More Durable]

  • How to install tiles the right way?
    In this video, you will learn the NTCA-approved troweling techniques to apply tile adhesive and set tiles. This technique creates a stronger bond between the tile and the substrate. Prevent crack transmission, lippage, tile breakage, bulging or tenting, and other costly tile installation repairs.
    Tiles are very durable materials that can last a lifetime - when the right tile adhesive and methodology was used. When tiles break, it is usually due to low-quality tile adhesive and faulty installation method.
    The way you trowel mortar for setting tile makes a big difference. Tiles can withstand extra heavy service conditions. It takes a lot of impact or load to cause bond loss when installed correctly over a sound substrate.
    On the other hand, unsupported spaces under the tiles create weak spots. Tiles with voids or air pockets underneath are easily damaged by heavy impacts, heavy loads, and other causes.
    Spot bonding with mortar is also not recommended. It may be easier to set tiles this way, but it’s only a matter of time before the slightest force causes failure.
    Today, many people are still using the wrong method in tile adhesive application and setting of tiles. They may get the job done more quickly, but they can’t get the proper mortar coverage and air gets trapped underneath the tiles, which ultimately leads to tile debonding.
    Swirling the mortar causes voids where the tile is not bonded to the substrate. These voids can result in cracked tile and bond failure under normal use but especially under point load or impact.
    Aside from impact and heavy loads, tiles with voids and poor mortar coverage are more likely to debond over a short period of time. According to the American National Standards Institute and the TCNA Handbook, a minimum of 80% mortar coverage is required for interior applications, and 95% for exteriors and wet environments.
    The straight troweling method is the ANSI recommended technique in applying tile adhesive. In the latest episode of Magtanong Para Sigurado vlog, you will learn why it's the right way of applying tile adhesive.

      Hi, thank you for your inquiry. Choose a tile adhesive that has excellent water-retention capability to hold its water content during the curing process. With this, you can eliminate the need to soak tiles in water, which saves time and prevents tile debonding. The pores on tiles can absorb the water from the tile adhesive, resulting in early dehydration and poor adhesion. Hi. Thank you for your inquiry. Thick bed method is a traditional way of installing tiles, which is already outdated. It's the process of applying drypack or tile adhesive with a thickness of 15mm to 25mm to install the tiles.
      This method has many disadvantages:
      - It is time-consuming because of the preparation
      - It cannot meet the required mortar coverage under the tiles
      - It is costly because it requires more material consumption
      - It requires very skilled workers to avoid installation failure
      We recommend applying a topping first using Cement grip and Hardcrete 310 prior to installing tiles to correct the floor level, then use the same technique as seen on this video. Here is the link for Cement grip and Hardcrete 310: th-cam.com/video/2NdXHfTcNPc/w-d-xo.html

    • @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS
      @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for your inquiry. Traditional tile setters use dry pack to correct the floor level and install tiles at the same time. But this is one of the major causes of cracking and debonding. However, there’s actually a right way of correcting an uneven substrate and install tiles using the thin-bed method. We recommend using Buildrite’s Hardcrete 310 to correct the floor level of low-to-medium traffic areas. Let it cure for 24 hours before applying SmartBond Tile Adhesive using the thin-bed method.

    • @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS
      @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're still using the dry pack method, we recommend at least using a high-strength tile adhesive additive/adhesion promoter to improve the adhesion strength of your mortar mix.
      Here's how you can do it:
      1. Mix 1 bag Portland cement and 90kg of sieved sand.
      2. Add 250 grams of Buildrite TILE GRIP to the mixture before adding water. Mix it with a mechanical until a homogenous and lump-free paste is obtained.
      3. Allow the mixture to sit for 5 minutes before stirring again. The mixture will yield 5.2 (25kg) bags of high-strength tile adhesive.
      TILE GRIP is a powder tile adhesive additive specially formulated to be mixed with cement and sieved sand to produce a high-strength tile adhesive for ceramic tiles.

    • @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS
      @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thank you for your inquiry.
      7 TIPS ON HOW TO USE THE TILE ADHESIVE PROPERLY.
      1. DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF WATER IN MIXING THE TILE ADHESIVE. Excessive amount of water when mixing the tile adhesive is one of the cause of tile debonding. The level of water added onto tile adhesive will significantly affect its adhesion strength. Tile installer must be carefully read the mixing ratio and methodology to prevent tile debonding.
      2. CLEAN THE SURFACE BEFORE INSTALLATION OF TILES TO PREVENT TILE DEBONDING. Unprepared and improper cleaning of the surface before tile installation will not let the tile adhesive bond to the substrate, and it will cause tile debonding in the future. Surface must be clean from any dirt and dust before the installation of tiles to prevent tile debonding.
      3. USE SUITABLE EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS IN APPLYING TILE ADHESIVE TO ACHIEVE BEST RESULTS. Unskilled tile setter, unsuitable equipment and materials, and lack of project management are just a few things that can lead to poor workmanship. Quality work begins with the conscious efforts of tile setter to execute the specifications of the contract, he is responsible for meeting standards of quality, care, and expertise.
      4. NO NEED TO SOAK TILES ON WATER. Tiles have pores will absorb the water out of the mortar without allowing it to set properly, leaving weak bonds between mortar and tile. But using a tile adhesive that conforms to European standard like Buildrite Smartbond tile adhesive, there is no need to soak the tiles on water because of its water retention capability, it also prevents hollowing, shedding, or even cracks on your tile adhesive.
      5. USE THE RIGHT SIZE OF NOTCHED TROWEL. No matter how much mortar piled onto the trowel, the notches apply it in nice, even lines of identical thickness. It creates spaces between the lines of mortar. These allow air to escape when the tile is pressed into the mortar. Without the spaces, you could get air pockets that prevent the tile from lying flat or adhering properly and will lead to tile debonding.
      Three commonly used trowel sizes are:
      3mm x 3mm Square notch trowel for 30cm x 30cm and below size of tiles.
      6mm x 6mm Square notch trowel for 60cm x 60cm and below size of tiles.
      10mm x 10mm Square notch trowel for 60cm x 60cm and above size of tiles.
      For large format tiles, back buttering is recommended to apply enough supporting adhesive under them.
      6. DON'T RUSH THE CURING TIME. Even though all the tiles are down on the floor and set, don't start putting the grout down. Allow the thin-set the proper amount of time to dry, otherwise you will damage the tiling job.Once tiling is complete, do not disturb for at least 4 hours. Wait 24 hours after grouting before opening the area to dry service and 7 days for wet service.
      7. KNOW THE RIGHT TILE ADHESIVE TO USE. On the Philippine market today, there is no standard on what tile adhesive to use on a specific tile application resulting to tiling failure.According to the European standard BS EN 12004; C1 and C2 ratings are the requirements for cementitious tile adhesive while S1 and S2 ratings are the requirements for deformable tile adhesive. This classification will determine the correct and suitable tile adhesive for each type of tiles and application. The size and type of tiles will decide what level of C rated tile adhesive to use while the floor elevation, indoor and outdoor area of application and floor and wall application decides the level of S rated tile adhesive to use on the tiling.

      @@BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS hi thanks for the response sir, kht ceramic tiles? Ksi mas porous?

    • @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS
      @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Traditionally, tiles are soaked in water to prevent it from absorbing water from the tile adhesive. The pores on tiles can absorb the water from the tile adhesive, resulting in early dehydration and poor adhesion.
      Therefore, you have to choose a tile adhesive that has excellent water-retention capability to hold its water content during the curing process. With this, you can eliminate the need to soak tiles on water, which saves time and prevents tile debonding.
      For this, we recommend SmartBond Tile Adhesive, a ready-to-use, cement-based tile adhesive created to properly bond most types of tiles for indoor and outdoor installation. It has excellent water retention to prevent the absorption of water into the dry tiles or substrate.

      Hi. Thank you for your inquiry. May tendency na matuklap ang tiles dahil sa ibat ibang factors katulad nang movement nang flooring na minsan hindi kaya nang tile adhesive, kaya nirerecommend namin sa buildrite na gumamit nang smartbond.

      We do not recommend to add cement the tile adhesive. It may affect the adhesion of your tile adhesive.

    Kay sa mix ng dry pack?

      It's better to use pure Smartbond Lightweight Tile Adhesive in installing tiles because it has a high bonding strength than sand and cement mix for tile installation.

      It may result to tile delamination due to low bonding capability of cement and low flexibilty.

      No need for dry pack if you already have a leveled floor. To get the right elevation of your floor you can use Hardcrete 310.

      Hi, thank you for your inquiry. Marami pong factors kung bakit umaangat ang tiles. Katulad nang pag gamit ng maling tile adhesive, maling paraan ng pag iinstall, maling surface preparation, hindi paglalagay ng spacing or grouting, atbp.

    • @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS
      @BUILDRITECONSTRUCTIONCHEMICALS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are tiles that are intended for floor application and wall application. Most of floor tiles is thicker than the usual and has a darker bottom part. Use the appropriate tiles depending on the manufacturers specification and chose the right tile adhesive depending on the area of application and the type of tiles.
