  • We travel to the famous Frank Perham Quarries (Harvard, Waisanen, Tamminen) in Oxford County, Maine. These pegmatite exposures are rich in Tourmaline (primarily Schorl), Garnets, Muscovite (mica), and a host of other minerals.
    This is Part Two of a Two-Part series.
    UPDATE: There is a NEW trail to the Harvard Quarry. Please use this new, easier trail, and DO NOT use the trail that we used in the video, per request of the property owners. Here is a map of the new trail (in green)

    I went to the Harvard Quarry in the late 80's, and I definitely Remember how steep it was. I found some black tourmalines, but because there were so many other mines to go to that were easier than the HQ, I only went to the HQ that one time.

    Nice videos, Thanks for the info. I do a different type of hunting in Doverfoxcroft, Maine. I metal detecting the Piscataquis river, and have found some interesting rocks and crystals. The Piscataquis is a low river in the summer times in this area. Everything from sand, gravel to 6 inch wide quartz veins across the river in the ledge and left over glacial boulders. I found a beautiful piece of watermelon tourmaline this year :) Hoping to find more :) Happy hunting !!

    Very cool. I've been to Mt. Mica, several times, but I appreciate the information on the second area. Cheers.

      We have too many obligations to make it back to Maine before the fall. I would love to get back in the fall, though, or early Spring (less vegetation and bugs)

    We're getting ready to put a couple of claims on some pegmatites. We hope the innards are just as exciting as what's in Oxford.

    That’s what a guy found close to where I live. I called it black crystal. He went in with a backhoe. He said he sold it after he was done 90,000 dollars Oklahoma full of crystals.

    Just as an update, this trail is on private property not owned by Frank. You MUST use the newly created trailhead (not shown in this video). Please do not try to access the quarry through the trail shown in this video. The owner does not want random people on his property.

    I live in Maine and wanted to head out for the first time to some of the quarry’s to try my luck with rock hunting. Do you have any suggestions/tips for someone doing this for the first time?

      Watch videos and study what the different minerals/crystals look like. Look at the matrix (the material that the crystals form in) and then visit the locations you see in the videos. Some of the places we visit are PAY mines and you have to see if they are open and sometimes you have to make arrangements ahead of time.
      Be safe, have protective gear (eye protection and gloves) if you will be chiseling. Join rock and mineral groups on facebook and share your finds, especially the ones you need help identifying.

    Does it cost to search that area and is there a place where you need to check in?

    • @rockhoundingusa8207
      @rockhoundingusa8207  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is free...no check in required. If they are working in the two quarries just off the road, be sure to stay safely away from the machinery, and use protective gear as necessary.
