      I do expect a separate unit for 120, which sadly does mean an extra $250 in some cases. A pro version of this unit for both 120 and 35mm in the future would be ideal.

    I was really disappointed with my Valoi - I had the early adopter wheels on mine which were terrible at pulling through the film. It got to the point that I gave up using it, and decided to just shoot 35mm going forward to avoid the hassle of setting it up only to get wonky or weird results. This looks far more promising though, would be interested to see a medium format version!

      And just get in touch if you want help with setting it up too - we can diagnose most problems from a few pictures of your setup and your scanning results.

      *This video is about the Valoi Easy35 system* not the one you used. I've got it and have processed a pair of rolls through. Simple to assemble and to use.
      Works perfectly and I have used film and flatbed scanners, as well as a dedicated cam-scan setup with column. Zero problems with dust.
      I'm tackling a *_very slight_* light creep at the first and last frames of a strip but it seems it's only because I cut the first roll before scanning, as this shows only on the roll cut before scanning and not on the other that was scanned with a small leader and trailer.
      IMHO, this design is sheer genious, it works like a charm and it is the most affordable solution of all. Like many have said, it's the death toll of the scanner.

    JJC make one very similar, with or without a light. It uses a 6-frame neg holder like a film scanner, or a dual slide holder. It comes with a range of adapters for different macro lenses. It’s also half the price of this one. I don’t know how build quality compares, obviously. If it matches the existing Valoi system it should be great. Like you said, there’s lots of choices at the moment.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere ปีที่แล้ว

      Its the same design as all the slide duplication rigs used to be, makes much more sense than the whole copystand setup that was a terrible idea to begin with.

    • @BriansPhotoShow
      @BriansPhotoShow ปีที่แล้ว

      The JJC system looks like a discounted copy of the Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter. They even call their product the "ES-2" as if to remove any doubt. Is it just a cheap, flimsy copy of Nikon's product, or does it offer some advantage?

    • @valoico
      @valoico ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While my opinion is biased so go do your own research but: it's a cheap and crude thing - the holders are trash (you have to insert the film into a fiddly strip for each 6 strips then feed that into a hole), the light is low power and not even and the overall build quality is typical cheap injection moulded stuff. It struck me as a product made by someone who understands how to put a cheap suitcase to market in terms of product design, but don't understand scanning at all. I've spent the past 4 years of my life understanding scanning and so designed the easy35.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@valoicoWell lets face it, you original design clearly showed you had no understanding of "scanning". The copystand system is a horrible idea and exactly showed you lack any real understanding of what you are doing.
      Even this easy35, could be vastly improved if you actually had spend time understanding "scanning". But at least you finally copied the only design that makes sense, something you should have started in the first place.

    • @chrispatmore8944
      @chrispatmore8944 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@valoico I did do my research. I actually bought one because it seemed a more practical and affordable solution than the rather restricted and expensive Nikon ES-2. The concept is hardly new. Slide duplicators have been around for decades, and my first (unsuccessful) attempt at digitising slides was with one of those old ones I got off eBay for £5. With the JJC all the threaded tubing is metal, only the part that holds the film is plastic. The actual film strip holder is the same style that comes with some film scanners that I have used before switching to the more convenient digital camera method. Yes, the holder is a little fiddly, but it gets easier with practice. The fact that it came with a slide holder was important as the bulk of my archive is slides. I didn't buy the model with the included, removable light because I have the Raleno light I use with the Valoi System. I bough the JJC version because it was the only alternative available at the time, and because a friend was looking for something affordable to do some occasional digitising, so I was testing it for him. I've written a series of blog posts on my website outlining my adventures in scanning/digitising film over the years, and you'll be pleased to know that the Valoi System has been my favourite, and I was going to invest in this new one, but it is more money than I want or need to spend at the moment, especially as I have two systems that work, or three if you count the Nikon Coolscan 4000. Your new one is definitely a welcome addition to the market and I'm sure it will be a success.

    This looks like an amazing camera scanning solution that cuts out all the fiddly aspects of dslr/mirrorless scanning! I’d love to test it out on my channel at some point! Do the first & last frames of the roll stay flat? That’s a problem I’ve run into with other film holders in the past when scanning strips of 6

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, all the fiddly aspects of the stuff they sold previously when they released a product that made no sense at all. And now they finally copied the only design that has been around for decades that makes sense, and slapped a 20$ led light on it and a kickstarter here we go.

    In all seriousness: where the final price of 200euros comes from? Ulanzi VL81 LED panel costs $15.95, the rest is 3D (or sort of) printed housing and inserts. Forgot about step-up rings to support variety of lenses, but they are sold separately anyways(?). R&D takes the biggest cut that's for sure, but it is one time payoff.
    So how it comes, that 1 tube with thread, 1 hollow "cube" base and 2 inserts minus Ulanzi VL81cost 185euro?
    ps: the product is great, no doubts, kudos to engineer(s)!

    Hi Nico, I'm one click away from pledging but do you know if the final product will be 3d printed? I don't mind the Ulanzi light as long as it's user replaceable when it dies.

    • @valoico
      @valoico ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We will use a process called MJF printing in Nylon 12. It's as sturdy or sturdier than Injection moulding and completely different from the 'spaghetti' structure of normal FDM printed parts that you might be more familiar with.
      Lights will be replaceable by us and this is something we are very aware of. If we switch to a different light or make a new one, we will find a way to make them backwards compatible for existing users.

      I highly recommend reading the campaign. But will ping @valoi

    • @RomanatorII
      @RomanatorII ปีที่แล้ว

      Focal length doesn't matter, just reproduction ratio. For full frame 1:1 is ideal. For APSC, 1:2 is enough. If you are using full frame and your lens only goes to 1:2, the correct extension tube will take it to 1:1.

    • @valoico
      @valoico ปีที่แล้ว

      With a full-frame sensor you will need a lens rated for 1:1 magnification. With APS-C, about 1:1.5. It doesn't have to do with the focal length but of the close-focusing ability of the lens. There are some recommendations in the campaign if you don't already have one :)

    Hi Nico. Nice video. Thank you for using “digitizing” vs “scanning”. Digitizing or duplicating is a more accurate term. I’m only interested if they made a mounted 35mm slide carrier that would hold 3 or 4 slides at a time. To me this rigid system keeps the film chip completely parallel to the sensor compared to a copy stand approach. Again, thanks for a nice video.
