I used to be a buddhist (zen) and today i'm a christian , and there is some parallels between the two in its view of human nature .
I'd like to shortly share with you what the core message of the bible is and its natural to start with a verse that is called John 3,16 which says :
"For so did God love the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life . "
So why did God have to "give His Son" ??
It's because God created humans to be a reflection of himself and His nature which is perfect love and compassion but instead in our free will we fell from God in disobediance and our nature actually altered into what we are today and as you buddhists know we do not do all of our actions with a intention out of perfect uncoditional love , which is Gods nature , no instead we often have a egocentric intention and in the beginning of the bible were it describes mans fall into sin it says :
"And God saw that mans INTENTION were evil all day long and it grieved God that He had created man"
So because God is a holy and just/good God He could not be around man anymore once we became inpure and because of that He withdrew Himself from us , but even if God hates sin He loves all humans unconditionally so that is why He sent Jesus , to do what we couldn't do and that is to live our lives fully according to Gods will from cradle to grave in unconditional love compassion and kindness , Jesus did this and this is actually visible when Jesus dies on the cross when he prays for His murderers He says : Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing .
Bible says that God laid all the worlds sin on Jesus, so by faith in Jesus we can receive forgiveness for our sin and be saved , saved from what ? The consequences of our sin which is that we are enemies of God because of our sinful actions and ultimatly it a day will come were God will judge all sinners in the afterlife , just like society judges criminals because they do things that is deemed unacceptable / evil .
Last quote from the Bible is :
Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life

@@a11an72 Christ also said I and My Father are One. the BIBLE is a religious Roman literary writing- a sort of parable about the laws of man: old coven-ant (law) < new coven-ant (law). God is All including the fallen man, the risen man, the god-man, and the devil. Also, God is not holy- God is Wholly.... I and my Father are One and anointed with the "holy spirit" that all souls/soles on the universal earth receive in the commercial seas of all democratic republics (their number), the three become the Whole, united in oneness, and that is how Christ calmed the stormy sea and walked on water.

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

1:57 It's interesting that the monks in Zen Buddhism receive cash offerings. In Theravada Buddhism, monks are not allowed to handle money. It comes from the precept (the 10th of the 10 precepts) to refrain from accepting gold and silver, or money as it's taken to mean these days.

Is the world as it appears to be, or is there some further reality beyond appearance? Plato's allegory of the cave, from The Republic, is one of the most famous and beautiful expositions of the difference between appearance and reality. Using Socrates as his mouthpiece, Plato argues that empirical knowledge amounts to no more than knowledge of appearances. In fact, he claims, our perceptual knowledge is at least thrice removed: it is merely knowledge of the shadows of illusions of reality.

It's only natural that things have come full circle for me. Firstly, I humbly offer my take on the Koan about Bodhidharma:"why,or what was his energetic action when coming from the west"? To pull out rotten teeth and dropping gold at one's feet. Next is the ancient Koan by The Buddha: "The finger is not the moon". Perhaps an apocryphal backstory is possible: 'While a yogi and yogini sit in rapt contemplation in a snow banked mountain cave; both of them did little else than repeat the sentence: the finger is not the moon. And so taking pity on them, the moon in it's capacity to do so, intimated to the both of them these: "Ah, dear ones, show me your finger I'll show you mine". A little while later, and quite emboldened they each exited the cave to tell their teacher of their insight. And so, several inches above the ground they strode across the blue snow beneath the light of the full moon.

This is how Zen is introduced to foreigners and Japanese beginners...
In some serious dojo they keep hitting your back before you ask, so your back will be purple in a few days.
And verbal and physical violence such as punch in the stomach or grab your head and slam your nose on the table when you make any subtle mistake or even without it is regular (I know a monk whose nose is broken).
Better appreciate the aesthetics and koan literature from outside, if you are not ready for the violence.

I remember when I used to think that Zen Buddhism was some kind of profound philosophy and path. I studied and practiced for years.
I found it ultimately to just be a convincing head game. its relentless believe in karma and reincarnation/rebirth, and even in its belief in enlightenment, all of these are just mental concepts that Buddhism puts in your head.
and the way they talk about mindfulness as if this is some kind of really special thing to do and that it is the ticket to enlightenment, all of this is just mental mythology. its all just Buddhist beliefs. Zen is just a head game that plays with words.

Mr. Grosbeak, it is even more weird then you think. The universe exist within the timeless continuum, thus Karma and Rebirth do not exist in a linear fashion, but each in its "Ever Present Moment Now" in timelessness. Karma exist through that timeless continuum, so what you do now everyday in this life, may positively or negatively affect a life you are living in another existence. We are much more than what we believe we are.
Religion has always screwed this up, because most do not understand that our universe is timeless. They cannot fathom the depth of our involvement in all of it. Einstein knew this !

      this is to Rumpel Stiltskin,
you made a reply to my comment but evidently you deleted it. I still have the whole thing in my social mail TH-cam. so I've read your reply several times. I found it to be thoughtful, something I had no idea of before. it actually was a game changer for me on how I think about that subject matter.
so thank you very much for your reply. I don't know why you deleted it. maybe you were foreseeing some kind of negative response on my party. be that as it may, thank you.

grosbeak His message is still there; I see it.
I think one of the keys Zen tries to do is decondition the mind in all of its confusions. Consider for a moment most of our suffering is entirely in the domain of thought: it's not what happens that makes us suffer, but what we think about it. To consider an example, traffic: is it itself an issue? Not until it's thought about and compared to an image we call "ideal". And so long as what we think in ideals is never what's actually going on, we struggle with the goings on for our thoughts on what should be or ought to be.
It absolutely is head games, but it's a head game to come out of your mind and return to your senses, to not be lost in thought, but to be aware of the present happenings going on, which you as an organism are flowing in. It also deals with that illusory ego, self, or soul with free will that we think we have, that is the real "I" as we normally perceive, only to see it for a pure fiction that has no reality. Knocking that away gets rid of the major psychological obstacle to living a life more engaged with the goings on than being lost in thought and attached to images over reality.

@@grosbeak6130 in Zen there is no beliefs about anything even reincarnation. It is to escape the mind essentially that is how you reach peace. Beliefs in reincarnation can cause suffering as they are pseudoscience

The Master of Zen Buddhism teaches students the immortal mind, but similar to find those who can refuse. Therefore assigned him to take on the role of next master, showing that the masters of Zen Buddhism did not believe the immortal mind as Mahayana Buddhism. A reason for the Master of Zen is In the past, those who did not believe in immortality mind were punished by ruling power, making teaching Anatta dangerous.

It is to help the sitter to aid them if they are feeling tired or sleepy. Usually done starting on the third day of a 5 or 7 day sesshin retreat, when the tiredness sets in. Though, at the California temple I attended, you had to specifically request it by doing a gassho. It really helps to return to the body from the wandering dreaming mind. Too bad this tradition is now becoming taboo, I thought it was a very deep practice, and intense emotions would wash through all the sitters when one sitter was receiving the kyosaku, and would help to remember that sesshin is a group effort. Though this kyosaku whacking is pretty intense compared to the gentle whacks I received.
