  • my sample animation about how jet engine works. please note that i am not aircraft engineer. what i created here is only based on internet research, just for showing my skill in 3d design / animation.
done in 3d max and adobe after effects.
    critics and comments are welcome.

As my old car mechanics instructor used to say, if you want to remember how any combustion engine works, think of it as a good night out......."SUCK, SQUEEZE, BANG, BLOW" long gone from working cars but it's as true for aircraft as it was cars

And I thought A380s had modern high-bypass turbofans, not relics from the 1950s.

This is a explanation of a turbojet...used on early fighter jets with all the thrust produced by the exhausting gases.
Modern engines are fan jets, they have another set of turbines behind the gas generator turning a large fan in front.
Most of the air from the front fan bypasses around the engine producing the majority of the thrust.

Those giant turbojets would be taking that A350 to mach 3

'as the jets of gas shoot backward, the engine and the aircraft are thrust forward.' is strictly not correct. The force to thrust object is produced in surface of combustion chamber. To understand it, we should look the surface in microscopic view. Many vectors forcing forward existed in front inner wall of combustion chamber, but this wall don't exist in rear side. By the net force, engine goes forward.

Why the fuel is mixed with the compressed air ? Can the compressed air provide enough thrust to move.

    Wher is starter in engine?

But the process itself doesn't start with the compressor at all

Nice video! So the fan sucks the air in but it cannot spin if the the turbine isn't spun in the first place? So this engine cannot start by itself? I think it might help people understand how the engine works if you could include the way those engines are started.

@Adam Hans A gearbox under the engine drives items such as fuel and hydraulic pumps, generators and oil pumps. One item on the gearbox is the Starter Motor - a small Air Turbine that gets it aid from a Ground Cart or from a Auxiliary Power Unit in the tail of the aircraft - you hear this running when you are boarding -it poers the lighting.

The model you display is a j85 jet engine , old school technology and not what powers today aircraft like the A380 in your intro

1:03 yes, the engine suck air with the fan but how does the fan spin all by itself initially?

    • @kepyyy5766

Fuel making it spin with a motor probably or something like that idk

A jet engine has something similar to a "starter motor" to initially get the turbine up to speed...After it's up to speed air is pulled in from the "fan" at the front and is compressed and mixed with fuel. it is then ignited by a spark in the combustion chamber...the air expends and turns a turbine at the back which is connected to the turbine at the front which continue to suck in air...from then on it is self sustaining and it continues until fuel is shut off :)

O motor do vídeo não corresponde ao motor do A380, pois é um turbo jato, e o que o A380 usa é um turbofan, bem diferente dos turbo jatos ...
