Just like any other OS, Linux distros can be susceptible to Malware. Personally,, I think Linux has the least likelihood of the OSes, but still possible.
I've had Fedora Plasma on my main daily driver PC for a little over a year now and LOVE it. Rock solid, reliable, and no ads. I refuse to upgrade my other PC with Win 10 on it to Win 11 because of Evilcorp's shenanigans. I only keep Win 10 on it to easily play some very old games.
Why would you be ok with ads? The ad BS has gotten out of hand. Remember the film Minority Report? Everytime you turn around you will be bombarded. You are paying for the software, the internet, the phone, the PC. We do not need everything we use to suddenly use up bandwidth and resources to show us things we don't want to see. And it comes down to one thing and one thing only...corporate greed. And money for MS doesn't matter, it is you the consumer. If everyone did it, a consumer revolt, then companies would take notice. @@FastGadgets why not? If you don't want to see ads on TH-cam you purchase premium, same as Twitch, it's been a long-standing thing with software to display ads with free versions of commercial software.
You can always turn off ads but I hate it also, it's the fact MS is forcing limited account not on when installing Windows. That frustrates me because I don't login to Windows, I like my limited offline account. Also I can't switch to Linux I use Coreldraw, Corel Paintshop Pro and other programs that aren't on Linux. So I am forced to stay with Windows, so I am hoping modders will make it so that we can uninstall edge, remove ads and allow third party programs to be installed. I bought Windows I should be able to install whatever I want and customize it the way I want.
You can still do a local account on MacOS. That is the default. If you want a global account, you create or use an iCloud account. Years ago, default accounts were local in Windows.
No you are not forced to stay on Windows because you have the option of learning how to use cross-platform software or other software that does work in Linux Mint Cinnamon. Change your mentality
Not talking just about MS, but in general - Even with all information they get to collect about you, they STILL spam you dozens of times with a shitty ad for a product I'm not interested in, which I keep skipping in the first second, and even sent a feedback that I'm not interested in it. If the purpose was to SELL then show me something I'd buy! But the purpose is to sell ads, not products, and leech both your data and advertisers' money while providing no benefit to either. That being said, Win 11 Start menu has already been so much enshittified and castrated of any functionality compared to WIn 10's Start (which was, actually, very good, and configurable) that adding more shit like ads doesn't matter much. I for sure won't be "upgrading" (if you can call it like that) to WIn 11, nor WIn 12 as it would be more of the same with added crappy AI on top, but will be moving to Linux, while keeping win 10 in dual boot as long as I need it for the software which can't work on Linux. Luckily, besides some games and banking/government apps, there isn't much more which can't be replaced. And I'm also not using anything Adobe nor MS Office which makes it even easier.
If anyone is paying for windows shouldn't get ads. This is how streaming services do it. They have ad free tiers. Also it wouldn't be that hard for someone to make an app that makes sure all your ad settings stay set. Can run once after a reboot
Agreed on the first point. If you get it free, You can expect ads. As far as getting an app that will block ads, I don't want to pay more than I do already for Windows, be it my PII or ad content.
Streaming services are getting greedier also and some already have tiers where lowest isn't free but also includes ads and one has to pay more to get rid of them
I am willing to bet that if Microsoft has not already accomplished this 100%, the ads will literally be baked into the windows kernel...specifically. the Telemetry engine
@FastGadgets Microsoft doesn't give a flying crap about the end-user and they have proven this for multiple decades now. They just barely give little crumbs of control here and there just to try to ensure that the end users Awakening doesn't fully happen on a massive scale but the problem for them is it's already too late, because that Awakening has already begun Do not kid Yourself Microsoft only cares about the end user to the extent that they can milk money out of them and more control to be removed from them. Adds in Windows are only the tip of the iceberg. To address the whole problem, one should figure out how to remove the spying system altogether. That is, at least, my logic to it. My main OS has been Linux for a very long time and I don't experience a lot of problems. I only boot Windows 10 for two games : FFXI & MSFS. That's just about it.
