My wife and I reopened an old movie theater recently as a revival house. We opened with Flash Gordon. Opening night was packed and the audience went nuts. Gordon is indeed alive.

"Super Snooperrrrr.... He's a Super Snooper, he's so super duper!" That's basically the chorus of the theme song. Fun fact is the movie was originally called Super Snooper, I think in Italy it was. Then they changed it to Super Fuzz when it was released in the United states. And it is definitely one of my all-time favorite movies, I still have the DVD of it and watch it in once in a while with my buddies when they stop by.

Horror, Fantasy, and Science Fiction are generally all considered to fall under the umbrella of "speculative fiction"; at least in writing classes. There's a lot of overlap on the Venn diagram of elements common to each genre. It's actually pretty rare to find story that is purely in just one category, though the focus might be primarily on one of those things. Star wars is generally thought of of sci-fi, but I've also heard it described as "science fantasy" as the Force is more akin to magic, etc. Something like the Sarlacc (and the prospect of being slowly digested alive over millennia) certainly has a strong horror element, too. Of course, Star Wars was also heavily influenced by samurai films and pulp serials...

Looking back, it was so clearly NOT a Star Wars clone (at least to me), and that's one of the reasons it's so great. It is refreshingly itself. The costumes, the set design, just fantastic. And a Queen soundtrack is always a plus!

Love this. I've always been a big sci-fi fan for as long as i can remember. When I was a kid, national danish television aired a series of movies they called "Farlig.." (Dangerous).. So there was Farlig Mission (Dangerous Mission) - a movie with Ted Danson called Once Upon A Spy from 1980. Could be classified as sci-fi. They got a shrink-ray at least :) But there was also Farlig Planet (Dangerous Planet) - which was a movie called The Killings at Outpost Zeta - also from 1980. At 10 years old, that movie scared the crap out of me. This is deffinatly a move you missed on your list :) Luckilly it seems to be availble here on youtube. But really love this. Already re-discovered a couple of movies I've completely forgotten. Keep it up :)

Great comments, and the picture quality is so good that it makes one want to watch even the silliest offerings - thanks to Blu-Ray? We have a great DVD store in Helsinki that orders anything you want. You may know that Mario Girotti a.k.a. 'Terence Hill', born in Venice, just turned 84 a week ago. And a while ago he was still filming the quite fun priest-detective show 'Don Matteo'. Love the Italian views and language, try it if you can find it showing on some channel, folks. They just replaced the lead with a new priest, but I'll keep watching, just like 'Midsomer Murders'. Btw., sts it's enough for us Europeans to watch U.S. films for local colour, city/nature scenes, different culture habits, food, music, clothes, cars, time period etc. Plot and importance is not always the main thing. Maybe it might be fun to watch some of the massive amount of films and TV shows made around Europe for Americans. Lots of discoveries to be made there. Ciao.

Flash gordon is an underrated underachieving classic. Its just so much fun from beginning to end. The two lead american actors are cute but its all the character actors that make it really pop. The costumes & set designs are wonderful & really give comic book camp. The pacing is perfect. Queens soundtrack is epic. Even the dated SFX still suit teh comic book feel. It was the first film I ever really wanted on Bluray.

Lol, i noticed the minor mistake, of the horror cultural significance. Yeah, these are all some pretty memorable films, & Cecil of Goodbadflicks recommended the Return. I think the Apple did a good job of, in a way, predicting what the mainstream music biz would become in the 21st century. Troma was actually founded in 1974, & they had had at least one hit, prior to the Final Countdown, with 1979's Squeeze Play, but yeah, they hadn't really taken off, as a company yet, at that point. Also, wow, was that really Kathy Griffin in Battle Beyond the Stars?? Had no idea she was around back then! That being said, cannot wait for the next 1981 edition of the Horror Project!!

I loved "The Final Countdown" when I was a kid. I really liked "Megaforce" as a kid too, so.....

When Max von Sydow came on screen you introduced him as Brewmeister Smith, Eh!😅 you are a man of culture as well I see if you know what character and movie that name is from! Did anyone else happen to get that or know what movie he referenced, eh?

Xanadu played B Fest back in Feb and it was a blast to watch with a bunch of sleep deprived B Film fans.

Even with it's cult status, Flash Gordon is still criminally under-rated, IMO. And, each of the original trilogy Star Wars movies was killer, too, of course.

I’m gonna say even though I was just three years old. It was the Empire strikes back. That was my favorite movie from 1980 even though I didn’t see it until it was on television a few years later when I was in kindergarten but which time I had the Empire strikes back lunchbox
Best fueling my crush on Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill

Thanks Josh - these lists are really interesting and entertaining.
Flash is one I have a love/hate relationship with. Not really due to the film itself but as a kid it was on TV every year on my birthday (or the weekend next to it). So it became this thing to me. That said soundtrack is amazing and I wish Queen did more films than this and highlander!

I wish we had better access to reviews back in the 80's. I paid for Ice Pirates, Cyborg, King Kong Lives and The Last Jedi. Okay, that last one came a bit later but where you guys before I bought my ticket??

You would think in a movie with a 20 million dollar budget the script would be finished before the filming starts ;)

The soundtrack to Flash is great. The intro sound is iconic. But for me, the Highlander soundtrack by also Queen, was better.
