    Giving some advice, get a plastic storage bin and don't use any substrate go bare bottom, instead of banana peels use a slice potato for a water source and change it every 5 days, you should get low protein dry cat food and crush some up put it in a bowel that they could climb into this will give them tons of nutrition, every few weeks vacuum crickets waste up around the corners of the bin and of course not to suck up crickets in vacuum lol but by doing it this way the crickets won't smell.

    2:05 / 11:12 Crickets die from dehydration.. It took me decades before I learn why there were patches of crickets and their sound. While other places had none. It's moisture. I hand water the garden and I noticed when I wet the places where I knew there were some crickets. They would be louder when I dampened the thick plants where they hid. Even the cicadas would be louder when I wet the branches of the trees.

      Cricket is cold-blooded, so generally to keep them live longer you need to cool them down to slow down their metabolism, and they would then eat less and are also less aggressive in cooler temperature

    I don't need to keep large numbers of crickets, as I'm only feeding three small tree frogs, so I hate to buy special substrate for their enclosure. Would it be safe to keep them on pelleted pine bedding? I do have plenty of that on hand, as I use it in my cats' litter boxes. It's not the spendy kind actually marketed as cat litter, it's sold as horse bedding, but it's the same thing, and it's absolutely brilliant at keeping odors at bay. It would be wonderful if I could use it for feeder insects, as well.

    • @trumpatier
      @trumpatier 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't actually need any substrate. Bare plastic is fine. Just be mindful about not putting food or water crystals on cricket droppings, and you're good! You can use a small piece of wax paper (though they sometimes eat a little of it) or probably aluminum foil to provide a clean place to set food/water.

      No, crickets need a very specific environment in which to breed. In your home....will never happen. One gets out....very easy to find them, just follow their chipping and spray with bug killer. WHAT YOU DON'T WANT IS TO USE FEEDER ROACHES!!!!! If those MF get out.... well, you'll need an exterminator and a BIG PROBLEM!!!! Crickets are the way to go. I've taken one of my cats big 17lb litter plastic containers and made it into a cricket keeper. Cheap, effective, and great way to keep your best feeders alive.

The dry food I give them is tropical fish flakes which they love. They have a lot of protein in so hopefully will stop them seeing each other as lunch! I also give them bug food and gel balls. I'm curious to hear a warning about fruit flies preceding the suggestion to using a banana peel, the thing we used in my science class to attract fruit flies in middle school. Does anyone have experience with banana peels?
    Very-new here, got my son a leopard gecko three days ago and we bought 30 medium crickets and the happy-looking gecko started hungry and almost immediately took like 6 the first time and has been eating fine from what I can tell: a few are still alive in the tank with his or her permission, a few are still alive in the plastic box thing I got online with a vent and a tiny plastic feeding thing (where I stuck some fake orange stuff from pet store that's of course made to feed them), a few escaped so I had to kill them before they left the room, and now a few are left. But several died. The store told me they'd throw in a few extras to compensate for the dead ones and I didn't count and maybe they didn't either, but is losing about 1/5 on the first run a bad one?
