Vans made prior to the new 2006 Boxer/Ducato/Relay had few galvanised parts and were expected to do 30K per year and be written off before 10 years old. Chassis and panel corrosion remains a key problem, for motorhomes/campers with high residual values.
I saw what I could get for my money and the base vehicles are ancient, the OEM parts supply will have dried up and you'll get taxed off the road the way all these air quality charges are going. Bought 2018 VW transporter instead. I expect even Euro 6 won't be enough for ULEZ etc when the next version comes out.
That’s crazy money for an almost 20 year old vehicle. If that’s the state of the market the industry is in trouble.

That's what you will pay for a hymer of that age, they are brilliant vans and go on forever
No, you've got things the wrong way around. High prices in this industry mean (1) that there is a lot of demand for the goods sold in the industry and (2) that healthy revenue and profits can be made by companies operating in this market. They show that the camper market in the UK is currently a very strong, healthy and attractive industry for companies to sell into.

Its amazing how all the cupboards, doors and fixtures seem so solid and still work so well after nearly 20 years!
What a testament to German build quality back in the day.
If you knew someone who could make up some more up to date seat and cushion covers for a few hundred quid, and if you could maybe refinish over that very dated-looking wood with a nice light but modern colour, I bet that interior could be done up to look fantastic, and for not too much money. And it will last another 10 years, easy.
The big question mark is over potential future emissions regs that might limit travel in some towns or in Europe, so personally I'd be looking at fitting a brand new engine (not a recon) that meets the new emissions regs, if that was feasible. Would that cost about £10k?
So what you'd end up with, for not much more than £30k, is a van with a new engine and a cleverly designed, smart looking interior that is built to last years.
Yes you'd still have that dated cab, but if you weren't fussed about outward appearances it could make a great project.
And it wouldn't draw the attention of thieves the way a new £80k van would.
Am I making any sense at all, or should I be taking meds? 🤣

It’s ok for a starter van it’s a bit tired looking the most I would pay is £8,000. Then if I got three years out of it I would be happy.😃

I just sold my 30 year old Autosleeper on a Ducato for 10k. If looked after they do hold their price. So this Hymer is well worth the money.
A relative of mine has a furniture company based in the Italian lakes that makes custom built furniture and count Serie A and Ligue 1 players among their clients so deliver anywhere from Naples to Paris. Their IVECO Daily has the 2.3 motor and 6 speed 'box. It's done 400,000 kms in the four years they've owned it with no issues.

I bought an identical one of these a few years ago, from a local dealer with a good reputation. It was built in 2004. Great looking van. Loved that it was 5 berth, and had so many seat belts. Hated that it didn’t have central locking. The downstairs beds were actually very uncomfortable for sleeping when the beds were made up. However mine had a lot of faults - gearbox issues 2nd to 3rd, brakes distinctly dodgy, engine funds escaping into cab when driving. Plus - though it sounds funny - the toilet door lock failed leaving my daughter trapped in the toilet compartment. I was there (with screwdriver ) to get her out but usually it would have been me on my own, so a fairly terrifying scenario in that case. I ended up returning it after 3 days and then had a huge battle with the dealer for my refund. They denied there were any faults. Wouldn’t have succeeded getting a refund without the support of Trading Standards, so remain grateful to them. I posted a review on Trustpilot about the dealer - as did someone else with a similar experience buying from them - and was very disappointed when the dealer forced Trustpilot to remove both of our reviews. I’m sure though there will be no such issues buying this one, and they are great vans with a great design.

Don't trust Trustpilot, they only look after the businesses involved to create the illusion of trustworthy enterprises to fool the public.
I paid £22k for my 3bed semi Lol. A nice example and gets you on the motor home ladder sounds expensive but it’s all there ready to roll. Hymers always hold money for a reason.

Well I have a 2006 544 classic very similar ,, I’ve had 7 campers and let me tell you this is the best little van I’ve ever owned , bright ´, spacious , modern feel , 2.8 with turbo mod to 165 hp ´ bit thirsty but that’s about it it’s the dogs ,, fill yer boots

Old vans can be OK. But what about the mechanical parts of it? IE, is it going to cost you a ton in welding costs to get it through the next MOT. If you have £20k to buy this, then you should be prepared for additional cost to get it through the MOT each year because of its age.

They hold their prices well I'd pay that amount ,but I'm looking to use one full time ,so another man's meat is another man's gravy 🙌
You won't get any better than that for 20 grand whether you want to live in it or use it for a weekend once a year. The only thing I'd look for is perhaps an oven/grill. It's a perfect size to drive about because you'd have issues putting it anywhere. People tend not to like RVs rocking up and parking.

I have a hymer 30yrs old. It's brilliant.. there coated under and don't rust..the Germans make campers. At 20 grand. I'd highly recommend that van it'll last you if kept well 30yrs.. its all your needs, or you could spend 70 grand so people cannot look at you more..

It looks tidy for the year..But I sold my very tidy 2006 Ducati based camper late last year because of the emissions you won't be able to drive these non compliant vehicles much longer, drive through cities or get them insured...

This happened 2 1 of my friends he bought a camper similar 2 this 1. 20yrs ago 4 £20.000 and sold it a few weeks ago 4 about the same he paid 4 it. Inflation has gone mad.😜🤪😝🤑

It may also struggle with emissions regulation zones, on engine, tyre, and brakes. With cameras going up everywhere, you may be the last to know, that you have just attracted a financial penalty ( per day).

Interior is completely done wrong Bathroom too small, how you pass to the bathroom from cab bed over bed in mid car? Completely wrong, this Hymer is big disappointment from that time! . see some of Italian makers how they do the interior on same chassis of Fiat. Engine / gearbox an reach 500 000 km no problem, chasis is galvanized no rust. Kitchen chatastrophic layout! I never seen worse. Dinet too big and not ergonomic. This car is completely disappointment if compared with others as same age!
