It sounded to me like she needed to convince herself that everything is GREAT and JUST perfect.
the most enticing thing about matty and taylor is that their relationship has all the pieces of what she says she craves. in all of her various albums and eras, she talks about wanting drama, believing in the idea of fate and soulmates, mourning lost connections. she's literally living out the way i loved you
Yes! I've been saying this for a long time, but in the context of her relationship with Joe, finally realizing that the stable guy is true golden love and the screaming and fighting and cursing your name guy is burning red love, which is toxic. But, apparently not. Maybe she's never really grown out of the sentiments she had in that song. Maybe Mr. Dependable was the kind of love she needed when everyone was against her, when the world was on lockdown and falling apart, when her masters were stolen from her, but now that she's OK again and on top of the world, she's craving that excitement and, dare I say, a bit of toxicity?. She will certainly make Matty fit the fate/soulmates/lost connect narrative if she wants him to.

Matty said that he got scared during the dating rumours, because he was still establishing himself as an artist an did not just want to be associated as someone's boyfriend. He wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and make his own name. He said how much pressure he felt from the media just through the specualtions of them dating, and almost all of the questions he got in interviews was about Taylor and their dating rumours. He spoke very highly of her as a person and artist, but did not want their relationship to come before him as an artist. So it was not just Taylor who stopped this relationship from happening.
And that's fair and reasonable on both their parts.
they even declined the opportunity to be the opener act on artists like taylor and rihanna on their biggest concerts. he declined the sale of their music on other pop stars like 1D because he truly values their art. this is sensible, i hope he'd change the way he acts on camera now

He might be to the swifties who hadn't heard about him maybe. But similarly with John Mayer, he had a huge fanbase before dating Taylor. John is still taken seriously as an artist after his relationship, no matter how much hate the swifties have given him. The John Meyer fans don't really give a damn about his relationship history as they are more into the music, not the drama behind the scenes.

It's either, as Zack is saying, that Question is about Matty and she used the OOTW sample to throw everyone off, or that Question was originally written about Harry but the good memories around it are of the times she spent with Matty during the Midnights collab when she was writing and recording the song. As mentioned, she has been using a lot of her songs that were originally written about other scenarios entirely and applying them to the current events of her life, so this could be the case with Question as well.

I am so sorry but I am LIVING for this mess. I love chaotic, messy Taylor and I was afraid we would never get her again.
Me too, but at the same time, for her sake, I was hoping she had matured past the chaos and into an era where she could finally enjoy a more stable life and relationship as she inevitably fades from the limelight (which isn't happening as soon as she expected, but it will happen at some point). On some level, it pains me to see 33 year old Taylor reverting to 25 year old Taylor behavior and circumstances, but at the same time, if she really wants to be brought back to life and have her fun, this is the time to do it. I hope she ends up finding true happiness, whatever that means for her, but I am along for the ride to witness her journey, no matter how bumpy or sidetracked.

Not me :’) I loved Folklore Taylor which seemed like a wise iconic poet who’s got life actually figured out and wants to live everyone’s fantasy of leaving everything behind with her lover. She was so inspiring to me at that time and now I’m so confused. I’ll thank her for giving me THAT era. But I’ll just sit back and shake my head for this era. As someone who got out of a disfunctional 6 year long relationship a few years ago, let me just tell you this girl was DONE way before there were any signs. My guess is she's been emotionally exiting this relationship through the back door for a long time (for whatever reason). I have no idea what was the final straw but I bet you anything that part of the reason she's this okay is because she mourned this relationship A LONG time ago. They may not have been oficially over when she hit things off with Matty, but her heart wasn't spoken for anymore. He just came into the picture at the right moment for her to ask herself all the questions and just go with it. If you listen closely, in the context of her relationship with Joe, reputation was how this love helped her through dark times, then we got the honeymoon candy phase of lover, and then went straight to folklore and evermore which are both quite telling in their lyricism - even if they are both proclaimed as fictional. You can tell they've been on the rocks for quite some time but Midnights just cemented it. Also, leaving such a huge chunk of your life behind is hard enough. Imagine writing a hundred love songs about someone, keeping your relationship quiet and picture perfect, making it a POINT to protect it from the media attention and creating this invisible string aura around it. How do you tell the whole world it's over? Everyone (except the swiftologist 😂) suddenly loved Joe Alwyn and what does anybody REALLY know about him? Only the things Taylor has said in her songs. The Matty situation makes too much negative commotion to be a PR stunt so it's probably real. Rebound? Probably but we shall never know. Let the girl have some fun, she's lived behind closed doors for 6 years.
Your point toward the end of this comment is part of why I’m a Maroon is about Joe truther. The memory over her and the legacy he leaves is the massive amount of her discography associated with him, whether as a muse or collaborator.

I disagree. My understanding of her relationship with Joe was that he made her a better person and brought her down to earth. Songs like Peace and the Lakes are very very telling. Relationships get difficult and have rough patches. She wasn't behind closed doors for 6 years. She was in a relationship that she described as incredible.

I agree for the most part. I left a toxic 3 year relationship when I was 20 and you're so right about mourning the relationship before its even officially over, but I definitely had a very long and messy healing process still to go. I had a rebound that helped me out of that relationship and I had falsely believed I was ready for something new with them almost immediately. I was shouting "I'm the happiest I've ever been" all over the place denying myself the space to heal and just making a mess of a lot of things.
If theres one word to describe the news around TS right now its MESSY. Like you said we will never know anything for sure my only guess is that shes having a messy post break up moment, I can't judge someone going through that. I couldn't even imagine being a pop superstar with all of the world watching me during my messy post break up breakdown (not saying hers is a 'breakdown')

I think the more time that passes, the more it's becoming clear that Joe & Taylor were in a tumultuous on again/off again relationship right from the start. It was never a solid 6 years.
Afterglow, Bejeweled, The Great War, etc gave us some major hints.

A lot of people, no shade on her it's just human nature, but they need another love interest to shoehorn themselves out of a relationship where they're dissatisfied or angry with their partner. Sometimes that means they start a new thing without having the will to exit the old thing first. If their former partner was basically happy with them and didn't get their "signals" then it's devastating.
I guess someone already did with regards to the leak about Joe being upset about Matty Healey happening so quickly. I doubt Joe cheated on Taylor. I've known some cheaters in my day and he doesn't belong in their tribe at all. More likely she passive-aggressively flirted with cheating because she couldn't openly communicate and demand what she wanted from Joe. This is a common human problem: lack of crucial communication skills in relationships. In her song "You're Losing Me" she refers to "glaring" at him every day, "sending signals" etc. That's not how you have an adult relationship or marriage, at least not a successful one. You let the other person know directly what you want and need. Taylor, by her own admission, isn't good at that, and also by her own admission, she creates drama, is very jealous, insecure and controlling, and needs a LOT of attention and reassurance. Joe probably made the mistake of getting too comfortable with her for her taste.

When she said she's the happiest she's ever been in ALL aspects, I thought about how happy and free she must feel to write about the last years. When you're in a relationship, especially when everyone wants to know everything, you tend to hide the bad parts. Now she can truly be honest about everything and it must feel so freeing. That being said, 6 years is a lot, I find it hard to believe that she's completely healed from that, but everyone's timing is different so idk 🤷♀️
I agree and no, there is no way she is healed from her relationship with Joe. She's riding the high of being on tour and the exhilaration of a new relationship. The real healing will come when Matty has lost his appeal and the crowds have all gone home. I just hope she'll be OK coming out the other side of that; it won't be easy.

And then the part where it says, "they're bringing up my history but you aren't even listening," is saying that Joe didn't care about what Taylor had to say about how the media was affecting her in bringing up her history. Like that song is about a person who is disinterested in you and doesn't take the time to listen to you or talk about how you're feeling.

the thing about taylor is that it’s never really over with her. right now we are recontextualizing so many things in her discography due to her public narrative. and the day her narrative is over will be the day her full autobiography gets published after she’s dead, evelyn hugo style. and she will do things in the future where we look bacl at this particular moment and think ‚maybe matty healy never made her happy and they were really just teasing this collab they published in 2024 and this was merely her trying to cool people off.‘ (this is going to be interesting to return to in 10 years, let’s see how this ages) but that’s the fun thing that has so many of us strung around her fingers.

Keep in mind the timeline 2021-2022 when she was writing Midnights with JAck, MAtty was writing his album with Jack at the exact same time. And during that time, Matty and Taylor worked on songs for Midnights.... so they were interacting back then at least on a friendship and collaborative level. Don't forget 6/9 opening acts have connections to MATTY, and she had to have planned that back in August 2022, and he planned his tour break around the Phoebe dates in May. I don't think she cheated. But, I think he has loved her and when things went south with Joe, and the cheating rumors, the "this is about how to propose, its not that hard" and "how to apologize is all they have to do", she reached for Matty who was there with open arms, who had loved her for ages. This Joe thing is turning into some tea, there are RUMORS surrounding the RUMORS about him.

I hear a lot of people judging her for jumping into a relationship so quickly after a long/serious one. First of all, we don't even know the exact details and when things switched off. Just because we heard Taylor & Joe broke up in April, doesn't mean they did and it doesn't mean she was happy till the end. I can absolutely relate to what she is going through. I was involved in a 4 1/2 year relationship where I lived with the person. They treated me poorly for the last year and I was too afraid to start over. I mourned that relationship while being in it. I knew it had to end. By the time, I moved out, I was over the relationship. I was excited to start over and was out and about. Within 3 months, I met a new man. We are married and have been together almost 10 yrs. I'm not saying Joe did anything negative but I'm just saying it's not always as easy to say "how can you move on so quick after a long intense relationship."
I did the same after being married to a guy for 17 years. 7 of those last years neither of us cared about the other. Like at all. It was a huge waste of my time.

this might be an unpopular opinion but I don't think matty is just a rebound. I think the fact that they worked on songs together for midnights and were in the studio again earlier this year suggests that they've been in contact for a while and probably developed a friendship before they started dating. they also run in the same circles and have a lot of mutual friends. they even wrote songs about each other on their most recent albums so there are clearly unresolved feelings there as well. I don't think taylor sees him as just 'some guy' she's hooking up with. moreover they must really really like each other to go through with this relationship knowing it would get a lot of negative media attention. I mean matty literally deleted his entire social media presence before they announced the relationship. they clearly knew there would be backlash. so even if it doesn't work out in the end, I get the vibe that they're both pretty serious about each other at the moment

I've had a theory about Question...? being about Matty Healy. Life took them in opposite directions so while there was not a ton of intense pining or back and forth, the seed of connection was planted in her:

Sanity at last! I think the loud voices are primarily really young people who don't have a clue how attraction works IRL. I actually did some homework on this guy and have now watched multiple interviews. He is NOT the demon he is being made out to be. As for the moralizing of his values that is such BS and mostly I think masks the fact that they are pissed he isn't Disney prince material like Joe Alwyn. You know what else he isn't? Boring. I've now also seen countless TikTok's of him singing and dancing and enjoying Taylor's performances and looking thoroughly smitten. Which is an enormous change from Joe's attitude. I think Matty shares some of Taylor's neurosis as well and it can be a heady thing to find someone who can connect along that line. Is it stable? Probably not, but if you never bleed your never gonna grow.
I have also seen clips of Taylor greeting and hugging Matty back in 2020 at the NME awards. So it's not like they never run into each other.

Plus another thing that people don't realise is that Matty is the song-writer and George the producer within the band. The other two band-member don't take part in the creative process per se. So for publishing rights, it should largely just be Matty and George, for example like Lennon and McCarthy in The Beatles. BUT Matty insisted early on that the four of them were a unit as a band, and they share out the money equally between the four of them, because they value the other two as equal band-members. That is a lot of money, and it shows how fundamentally decent he is.
Please give him a chance, he is a genius artistically and lyrically, he definitely goes to far sometimes, but fundamentally decent person.
It is astounding to me that people are so disrespectful about her expressing happiness during this season of her life because of their own misperceptions about her and her relationship with Joe. She loved him but there was good reason for them to finally end their relationship. Long-term, they wanted different things and grew in different directions. And that's okay. It is so disrespectful to me to characterize her as losing her mind when she's actually just finding herself and enjoying a new season in her life. Her relationship with Joe ended privately long before it was made public. She did her grieving and moved on. And that's okay. I think that most of everybody being dismayed about it has to do with them being disappointed that their projections of who she was and what was going on in her life did not match the reality. Yes, they were "papped" on the street in October, but we also got a couple of very candid bystander shots of them in New Orleans around her birthday in Dec. when he was filming there, and they supposedly put a London mansion under contract for purchase in November. Things definitely could have been rocky for a long time, but I think they were really trying to make it work (or at least not 100% given up) until Jan. or Feb.

Realistically speaking I think she's just grieving all that she lost. She lost six years worth of time and effort, she lost the future she once thought she had with him, the person she thought she was going to become and many more things. She might want to make a point that she's never been happier to counteract her grief (which a completely normal part of a break up) but nevertheless it's a lot to deal for anyone and especially with such a public and scrutinized life.
Who do people think Taylor should date? I can't think of a better person than a fellow musician/lead singer. I feel like people forget how rare people like Taylor are. Being social, a performer capable of entertaining huge crowds but also being introverted enough to write songs is very unique. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a family and get married one day. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is plenty of drama as well. But, I think Taylor and Matty are going to do a lot of great things. People should be excited, not angry.
This is a fantastic observation and directly ties in with something that Ed Sheeran said recently. He said there were very few people that could relate to the experience and pressure of consistently creating music and performing it to those types of crowds, and the fandom etc, and that TS was one of those few people who understood him.
Plus, on another point, Ed Sheeran also asked Matty and The 1975 to support him on his global stadium tours next year. Matty said they were offered more money than they had ever dreamed of, an obscene amount. However, despite being good friends with Ed, they turned it down, because they didn't feel it was a good fit for their artistic direction as a band. Those are some hard-core artistic principles right there.
Once all this back-lash dies down, I am convinced that even Swifities will realise Matty is a very decent, deep person and a great show-man. Has he messed up royally at times, yes- but he is fundamentally a very charismatic and likeable person. Anyway, I wish TS and MH all the best, whether that is in a romantic capacity, or if they revert to their existing 10-year friendship!

I strongly believe Joe did her wrong. Whatever it was. I was at her Houston show and when she sang You’re not Sorry for the first time in like a decade it clicked. No matter how fast she falls in love or how “petty” she can get, Taylor would NOT disrespect her relationship with Joe for what she painted it to be if he didn’t majorly f up. All these surprise songs point to a betrayal. Her friends unfollowing him. Her rubbing it all in his face. It wasn’t an amicable breakup. Everyone thought Joe was wonderful because of how SHE depicted him in her songs, he’s too private himself for us to really know him. She clearly praised someone who never gave her that praise back. She was talking because she was in love. There’s no way a man in love would avoid every chance to speak about his amazing girlfriend of many years. He probably enjoyed her company, enjoyed dating Taylor Swift (in one of his earlier interviews he’s so amazed he met Kristen Stewart). Maybe he wasn’t all that about her. She was in love and she put him in the light she wanted to see him in. But that time is up. He did something bad.

Agreed. Tree may have tried to warn her, but when you're blinded by infatuation it's hard to listen to reason. She also likely knows the "real" him and knows his stupid performative comments are just that, so she may not have realized how offensive they seem to those who don't know him. In any case, they're in damage control mode now, downplaying the seriousness of the relationship by using adolescent terminology like she has a crush on him and they're having fun hanging out, and by hiding him in the back of the box seats and keeping him off the stage in her most recent tour dates. He goes back on his own tour June 2, so they may just lie low until then and hope things blow over.
