      I scored a 1969 era eb1 in Hawaii on vacation. This guy isn't even taking this bass as far as it can go. It can completely overdrive a tube amp into that Cream and Mountain territory with no added effects. I use it with a 1969 Traynor YBA 1 through a 2x12 cab. It keeps up and then some.

    • @6arcsn1sky
      @6arcsn1sky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@maxreichert8050 I hope you still own that 1969 EB1 since Felix Pappalardi made it sound more bad ass with Sunn tube amplifiers.

    • @maxreichert8050
      @maxreichert8050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@6arcsn1sky I would never sell it. I got it for $1000 with original case. I haven't been able to find a used one for under 2 or 3000.
      Like I said, this guys is demoing this bass all wrong. He never took it to the extreme of what you can get out of it.

    Felix Pappalardi from Mountain (sounds like the opening chord from Nantucket Sleigh Ride at 4:36) used this Bass almost exclusively. Jack Bruce used Felix's actual EB-1 Bass during the Cream reunion shows at the Royal Albert Hall shortly before he passed away a few years ago.

      Mountain is definitely in my top 3 bands ever, I really wish gibson would reissue the EB-1. There was an epiphone version but it wasn't the right colour, had a normal mudbucker and doesn't have the double bass stand thing. I'll probably my own version a some point.

      The EBO sounds identical. The EB3 bass has also a smaller bridge pup to dial in brightness. The key to the deep floor shaking sound is the huge, side-mounted "mudbucker" neck pickup. This was used by Jack, Felix, & also Mel of GFR. Mel replaced the pair of stock single coil pups out of his Fender Jazz bass with a Mudbucker he took out of an EBO bass had to also give him his signature sound on the first handful of GFR albums (before they commercialized their sound).

While it's not my favorite bass, this might be one of my favorite of your videos because you broke out that kickstand!!!! Thanks for that. • @willd5105

    That pickup is not a humbucker, it is sidewinder single coil (coil's top and bottom face sideways) with the magnets closer to the neck and the screw pole pieces (external to the coil, like in a gold-foil type) on the opposite side, the end nearer to the bridge. I'm not complaining at all btw, this is the only video I've found anywhere of one of these pickups through an amp. I'm very impressed to hear what this design sounds like in isolation from other instruments, Gibson really did nail that stand-up bass sound with this design but trends gravitated towards higher outputs to drive louder, more efficient amps through the stadium rock era

    John Paul Jones was pictured with one of those on an early Zeppelin album cover. Super cool looking but only has its trademark thudding sound, one reason Fenders are in almost every bass player's collection. Classic bass nonetheless!

    • @tinyb69
      @tinyb69 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Paul Simmons It was on Led Zep III. He played it on Tangerine. It was originally used in Little Richard's band, in the late 50's, and James Brown's band, in the early 60's. He picked it up between the "Beck's Bolero" sessions, and the forming of Led Zeppelin.

    Awesome tone. FYI, the pickup here is single coil. The humbuckers came out in 1958 with the EB2. You can spot the single coil pickup because the pole pieces are at the bottom of the pickup cover, instead of in the middle. Also, the brown cover is only for single coils.

    I started in a band in high school and had to leave a few years later when the draft was catching up with me. I started with a generic inexpensive starter base then moved to the Hofner Club Bass, and ended up selling it to buy a Givson EB1 from a musician that was down on his luck. It weighted a ton but it was worth every second of misery to play that thing every night.
