  • Today we discuss how we stayed in the most controversial room on Amtrak and how that went. We will go into detail on how we booked this room and why and how others can book this room and under what conditions. You will be surprised when you see this room. This was the Accessible Bedroom on the Viewliner II sleeper car on Amtrak.

Thank you guys so much! I’m disabled and because pain and fatigue play such a role, little things can become big things. Being able to see, and then learn about pros and cons is priceless and greatly reduces my anxiety. You two - on top of being the cutest couple ever - are the absolute best train reviewers. Much love to you both, and safe travels! 💚🙏🕊

I took a View Liner 2 from Ft Lauderdale to Philadelphia. I specifically asked what accommodation would suit me best with a very large walker. I got the accessible room. Personally, as a solo traveler, I loved having the toilet in the room! Very convenient in the middle of the night.

Not to put too fine a point on it, some people need an immediate access to a toilet either due to their disability or to age.

I am service disabled with a VA card and a vehicle hang-tag, but my conditions do not require a wheelchair (yet). It’s apparent to me why Amtrak requires a personal wheelchair to trigger the discount. To be blunt, it’s to filter out the “fakes”, like the people bringing their pets on planes as service animals wearing vests they bought from Amazon, to avoid paying a fee. Canes and walkers are cheap, and anyone can ask for a free wheelchair at the train station (or airport). Buying a wheelchair is not cheap, and most people will not take on the expense and hassle of dragging a wheelchair around with them if they don’t need it. If the accessible bedrooms are booked months in advance with the personal wheelchair requirement to trigger a discount, it would be ludicrous if anyone with a hang-tag could book a discounted room. I support their policy. People who really need a wheelchair have one of their own and deserve a break. Traveling in a wheelchair is really difficult. When my wife broke her foot a couple years ago, we had to fly and navigated 3 airports with wheelchairs and luggage. For us it was a temporary inconvenience, for others it’s a real hardship.

My husband and I had an accessible room when we traveled from New York to Orlando. We were quite happy with the room but the toilet situation was quite awkward, lol. We ended up just telling the other to go sit in the dining car for a few minutes, lol. My husband is legitimately disabled but we were told when we booked the room that anyone, disabled or not, can book the room if the trip is less than two weeks away. My husband did not travel with a wheelchair but we still got the discounted rate (I called and made our reservation over the phone). We were told that the handicapped tag we used in our car (and that we brought with us for the rental car) would serve as documentation of his disability but nobody ever asked us to show it.

When I was a kid, my grandpa retired from the railroad. One of the station agents told him to take me somewhere overnight since railroad employees didn’t have to pay for the coach ticket where their railroad used to run and they got a discount on rooms. They suggested getting the accessible room and making me stay in the upper bunk. So, you can bring a grandkid if you want/need their help.

Definitely one for we who are disabled and have troubles with the standard roomette's tiny toilet/shower. The standard 'bathroom' for the roomette is not easy for some of us to use. I'm also including those who use wheeled medical devices like a rollator, wheelchair, walker.

I sometimes need my ewheelchair, but cannot easily climb stairs anymore. Also, even just walking with my prosthesis would be scary with the way the trains lurch about while moving fast. A few things:
    - Allie said the VL1 Accessible Room (H-room for short) does not have a shower. It does have a shower in the bathroom, just like the regular bedrooms, but the bathroom is much larger than in the bedroom.
    - In the VL2 H-room, if you don't plan to use the shower, the shower makes for very convenient luggage storage.
    - IMO, the VL2 H-room is the noisiest room on the train. It's directly above the wheels, and all the track noise comes up thru the shower drain, and of course there is no door on the shower. There is also an air vent on the room door, and any noise or conversation in the vestibule comes into the room. I had one trip where the room attendant and the conductor were having an extended loud and boisterous conversation about their personal automobiles right outside the door at 11pm.

Our rule of thumb is roomette for one night, but bedroom if it’s a two-night. We’re both kind of tall, so the roomette gets kind of cramped for a long haul. The size of bedroom’s wet bath is comparable to a camper van and hasn’t been an issue. We always leave the accessible room for those who need it.

I got bumped from a Superliner Roomette to an "Accessible Bedroom" due to an Amtrak ticketing error (long story)... Very similar layout. Downside: the toilette was right next to the window in the Superliner format (AWKWARD) and it was on the lower-level at the end of the car...right on top of the wheel bogies. Very noisy, very hot...and in the middle of the night we hit a grocery cart someone had placed on the tracks and it came to rest right under where I was sleeping. Talk about craziness. I thought for sure we had hit a car or something. I only got put in the room because it was empty on that run...

@@arizonarebel5706, it wasn't terrible... You're just right above the wheel-trucks and so you hear alot of the noise from the rails. If you're on a rough set of tracks, expect to hear the squeals of the wheels as the rub and the "clack" of the joined rails. As for the "hot"...it wasn't totally unpleasant (especially if it's cold outside), but you're next to the heater/furnace. If you like things on the "warm" side you're in luck.
As for "comparison," if you were on the upper level, you'd be much more quiet but you'd have alot more "sway." (You'd also have stairs to deal with.) The lower-level rooms are much more stable.
It's not all bad. I hope you have a good trip!

Hopefully, I won't blow a fuse. :) About the noise, we're both hard of hearing, so maybe that'll help. lol I'm thinking about reserving the Family room down the hall, too. I just returned from my very first Amtrak trip. Cardinal from Virginia to Chicago. Zephyr from Chicago to Sacramento and return trips the same. I had a roomette. I was traveling with two friends who stayed in the accessible room H, one of which is wheelchair bound. Was I ever glad for the roomette! I visited my friends but that room (H) was so noisy and rocky I thought we were in an all-night bar on a mechanical bull that would not stop
When their room door was open, they also had people walking directly into the room not realizing it was their private room. There is no curtain at the door like the other rooms. Their curtain was only to cordon off the toilet (which was very weird in and of itself). I would not want to stay in that room unless I absolutely had to.
On one leg, (Cardinal) their shower did not work in the accessible room nor did the shared shower. Thankfully that was only one overnight and our rooms had sinks. The Zephyr was great coming and going with exception of the noisy and rocky state of the H room. Our last leg home from Chicago to Virginia (Cardinal) had a crew that was a mess. It was a very disappointing ride to say the least and I am glad that leg was not my first introduction to Amtrak. That shower also did not work among a myriad of other shortcomings. I was very glad to see Virginia and leave that train and crew behind.
I would not recommend the accessible room unless you really need it. I was a single in a roomette so I was fine but I think the roomette could get a bit cozy with two people especially if you are traveling with more than one overnight. Daytime is fine but sleeping and dressing could be interesting with two people. I did however sleep wonderfully in my roomette (bottom bunk).

i took the Southwest Chief from CHI to LAX. When i booked the tickets i did not realize that i was given an accessible room. When i boarded i told my attendant to try and find someone who may need the room for various needs. She said she asked the one elderly couple in my car and they said no. I wasn't looking for money or anything I just wanted somebody to use the room who really needed it. It turns out no one needed it so I stayed. I was traveling alone and what I found was that it was nice to have a window on both sides of the car because the accessible room took up the width of the car but both windows were small and I would have much preferred the roomette window which is the length of your room. Also the accessible room was near the common toilets so in the evening or actually just whenever, if somebody came to use the toilet, invariably they would not shut the door all the way when they were done so the door would just swing back and forth and bang around. This happened a lot at night and it woke me many times. Yes, it was nice to have the toilet in the room but again the pros did not outweigh the cons and I would have much preferred to be back in a small roomette. If I had been traveling with my wife, that's a different story.

The room was filthy the door wouldn't lock the intercom did the work. We were taken off the train in Denver and bussed for five hours because of a washout, not Amtark fault, still, this was a bucket list trip for me, not my bride. To Amtraks’s credit after a couple of emails, they did refund my money. Still, that is no way to run a railroad. I'll try VIA’s Canadian to see how it should be done, but will my wife come?

The ONLY Amtrak trip I thought was decent was Albany to NYC
It took 3 hours and it was business class and they gave you free water and soda
Now it cost 100 dollars VS. 50 dollars for a coach seat.
So, you got a little more space in the seat and a little more overhead space, and 2 free bottles of soda, for that extra 50 dollars
But, I have traveled coach and it is horrible
    Business class is nicer
I tell everyone that if you get a coach seat what you want to do is go to the club car because they have Diner style bench seats that you can stretch out in and they have power plugs so you can plug in your laptop
The 800 dollar roomet has 1 single outlet.
NOT a standard duplex outlet with 2 outlets, they have just 1 outlet next to the door, so I tell everyone to bring 2 6 outlet power strips with 3 foot cords and a 6 foot light Guage 3 prong extension cord. Plug the 6 foot extension in the single outlet and then plug in the 3 foot 6 outlet power strip and if needed plug in the second 6 outlet power strip.
I have a cpap and other devices and I used both strips and took up most of the outlets on both strips.
You can never have too many strips.
But I was shocked because the train was supposed to be leaving NYC at 7pm, and was scheduled to arrive in Savanah at 11am and they said that breakfast was included
The train didn't leave till 6am and I had breakfast around 9am.
Then I had lunch and they begrudgingly gave me a free hamburger, then when we were still in D. C. at 5pm they said they would not comp another meal.
I pointed out we were 6 hours overdue and got a mean look
So I paid for dinner and slept from 10pm till 8am, over 26 hours had passed since we left NYC
We spent a lot of time just sitting on sidings letting freight trains go by.
I wound up buying breakfast, then lunch, then I got off just before 5pm in Savanah
A day and a half spent traveling on the train.
    Driving it takes 12 hours
and takes about 20 gallons of gas, so 80 dollars to drive versus 800 dollars.
And the meals and drinks cost me another hundred.
    That really upset me
That their delays made me have to buy meals
I am not a cheap guy
But when I lay 800 dollars and they said it included dinner, if I wanted a late dinner, and breakfast, which made sense if we left and arrived on time.
But if they are delayed, they should include all meals.
And the drinks should all be free.
Having to Trek all the way to the locomotives to get to the club car, the entire length of the train to get a soda, that is bs
They should have a separate club car between the last sleeper and their employees sleeper, just for the first class sleepers
It would not be a big deal to have a car like that in the rear that the sleepers could just go in and get a soda or bottle of water and a cookie.
Amtrak is a compromise reached when all the railroads eliminated passenger service and the government really never planned to keep it going.
They thought it would be gone before 2000.
I think they should build the 300 mph high speed rail network like China and Japan and other countries have.
People don't want to travel a day and a half.
A high speed train would do NYC to Savanah in 3 hours

Excellent explanation. I have really wondered how booking this room worked. We are planning some east coast Amtrak trips for 2024 and more and more, we're thinking we'll just ride in coach. In 2013, we took the Silver Star Raleigh to NYC in a roomette and cooked to order meals in the dining car with white tablecloth service were a real highlight of the trip. Is there any chance that Amtrak is going to return to that level of service?

My late husband had ALS and became quadriplegic. He had a Permobil electric wheelchair with a turning radius of 26.5. That toilet would have been perfect. I'm not sure about the shower, as I don't see straps to hold a person in place. I am assuming the train does not have an elevator so it's depressing to think all meals would have to be consumed in the room. It also looks difficult for a wheelchair-bound person to sit naturally and look out the widow. But if the person is able to get out of the wheelchair and sit on the sofa, I would just ask for safety straps so they don't slide down or collapse. We did go on an overseas vacation with the family so I think for severe disabilities such as ALS, Air travel is the way to go

That is IF your selected car is directly behind the dining car.
If there is another bedroom car, baggage, or the locomotive in front of yours, then NO. You cannot get to the dining car.
There is a wheelchair space in the dining car for wheelchair users who are lucky to be behind the dining car. Just request to your attendant that you'd like to eat in the car, and see if your wheelchair is the right size to het through the doorway. (If your wheelchair was big enough to come into the train at all, it should be big enough for the dining car's doors)
