As a Russian, it's so fascinating and it makes me so happy that Leigh Bardugo took elements of 18th century tsarist Russia for her books. You don't really get to see much of that style nowadays. :)

As a non-russian I can only agree. It's refreshing to see fantasy that sprung from different influences than the ones we're used to.

This was a great show! Although the books are slightly better, this was fantastic. This visuals are stunning and the characters are well developed.

There's a video called 'The World of Shadow and Bone' by a channel called 'Funwith facts' that copies this video word for word (at least on the intro, didn't want to give it any more of my watch time). Just thought I'd post this here in the hopes someone who can do something about it sees it...

@@phadenswandemil4345 "Alina in the show is keenly aware that if she fails to destroy the fold, she will be labelled as the new heretic."
but she doesn't address this problem in the show until the 7th or 8th episode. she is the PROTAGONIST. we, the audience see the story/world through her eyes. her motivations and feelings should not be a mystery for us, that "luxury" is reserved for the villains, anti-heroes and companions. if we see that the protagonist is acting differently than she should (and it doesn't make it better that she has more information than we do not have - quite the contrary, that makes it worse), we will feel disconnected from her and we won't like her.

So if you want to understand it better I’ll give a short character review , not really spoilers , but read it at your own cost
    Shadow and bone
Alina , homesick , lonely ,double simp .
Mal , fighter , and will find anything also lonely .
Zoya, a mess of emotions , (she is the reason why I didn’t include last names to the characters)
Kirgan, Alexander , general , the darkling, ( yeah he has lots of names one more which would give everything away but I shall not name it ) basically a simp , got uno reversed , also lonely , very complicated. But still what’s not to like .
Genya, simp , and servant ,and something that would give away the story so I will not mention .
Barga, rude but means well , harsh but fair .
    Nadia: background character
    Marie: impersonating
The king , yeah ummm no
The queen , old but still tries to look new
Ivan , you can’t tell the difference between him and a volcra
    Six of crows
Jesper , charming, talented , has a gambling addiction.
Kaz ,would be good at poker because of his stone cold face .
Ineg , complicated , assassin but without the killing part , religiousish, practically a slave .
Conductor , ( if your watching the show not in the books ) he goes where the money is
I’m not sure where you first see Nina and Matthias but I believe it is in king of scars
    Nina ,a simp , fighter , brave .
Matthias also a simp , has trust issues .
And there we go I think that’s all the you need to know
    Oh and don’t forget about
    Milo : a 🐐

I never watched ATLA but it's very different from GoT. GoT didn't even cross my mind when I watched Shadow and Bone.

    • @szepi79
      @szepi79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It is very far from GoT. Well, except for the Nina subplot, because that's almost copy + paste from it. (at least so far)
Edit : maybe the books were 'cheap', but the show is definitely not. The visuals and the world building are top tier. They clearly put a lot of time and money in those aspects.
