Ive been doing this for 3 years now. I'm a curly girl, too and i mix the rye flour with water and thats basically it. Massage it into my head, leave it in for 2 min, rinse it out. Done.
@@Beyeholy7 i just use normal rye flour, its not the wholewheat one. No straining, no nothing. Just mixing it with water until i like the consistency and then i massage it into my wet scalp and rinse it out with medium warm water
I'm not a person that cares about zero waste or veganism, but I'm extremely interested in using natural, non-toxic beauty products. Thanks for the tutorial.
I am trying this again. I did this years ago, but didn't think of straining it...... that is why I stopped. Just a suggestion to make the lump part go away. Don't add hot water first. Add some cold water and mix, then once that is smooth add the hot water. I am sure my curly hair will be thanking me and you soon!
I use Light rye flour which is much easier and quicker. mix with luke warm water with a folk. no need to strain i dont get any lumps .it works brilliantly.
I can't find light rye flour ANYWHERE, it's all either sold out or unavailable, do you know of an online place where it might be available at a reasonable price? All the stores in my city also don't carry light rye flour, it's crazy! Still trying to figure out why this is. :(
@@SpiritIncarnation Here in Germany it's easy to find a costs less than a euro, so it's weird that other countries neglect it so much. Maybe because Germany is the country of bread. For real. Lovely hair! Thank you for the measurements. I’m flicking through videos and you’re the only one so far to actually provide the ‘recipe’. Can’t wait to try this. 👍🏾
Hi Alissa, I have been trying the no poo method for 10 weeks and was pretty close to giving up I tried the rye flour using the steps in your video and I was really pleased with the results thanks for sharing :)
I just try washing with rye since two weeks and will stay with it! Fun you found the same! Another thing I love is linseeds conditioner, quite a light leave in, but easy to make and zero waste.
Thank you for this video. I tried the rye flour shampoo recently by sifting 1 tablespoon and then just adding a bit of water which left a few particles in my hair that I didn’t like, so I am excited to try your way. I also wanted to tell you that your hair looks amazing!
Wow this was amazing! I just tried it this afternoon after a day tidying up my vegetable garden for winter. It has left my hair really soft and feels great! I also used a rosemary water finish at the end 😊
Would love to see your updated hair routine. Especially with any zero waste hacks for curly hair. I’m just starting my curly girl journey and use flax gel but haven’t found a good shampoo so will definitely try this shampoo method.
MILK BAG!? GOT IT! I used rye flour a few years ago but stopped because I couldn't get the little pieces out properly. I just a fine strainer... but this idea is great! I will give it a go. I use ACV rinse otherwise which is the best thing that have happened to my hair and scalp. Makes it so easy to brush and feels and looks smooth and shiny
I tried the rye flour wash and it was NOT fun cleaning the bath area after -- and not so easy to get it all out of my hair. I decided if I do it again in future it will be in a bathing suit in the backyard with a hose! :)
Michele Michael* ah no! I think every rye flour is different, so maybe experiment with a different ratio, it sounds like it was too gloopy - it should be a very light pouring consistency. That way it goes in the hair and down the hair drain super easily without being difficult.
@@alissaevelyn Ah! I bake my own whole grain breads and make my own flour (in a high-speed blender) so the flour was NOT a very fine grind and had none of the bran, etc. removed. Thanks for the tip!
Awesome! (Aren't helpful little ones just wonderful?!💙) I'll have to try this...just as soon as I've finished off all the other shampoos I got trying to find a good shampoo for my curls. That will probably only take a couple years or so. 🤔 LOL! I will put this video on my helpful tips list though! 'Cause anything natural DIY is better! Speaking of, did you try the aloe vera juice for your itchy scalp? I only had to use it a couple times myself. I'll probably do a "maintenance rinse" every few months or so.
long yarn I didn’t have to because the brushing worked a treat! But I’ll definitely recommend it in future because not everyone wants to brush out their curls! And yes, I totally know what you mean about the endless amounts of curly girl products, I have soooo many to go through.
Your hair is incredible! Can I ask you a quest pls? I used a silicone by mistake, not water souble😑 would I get it out with a clarifying shampoo or do I need to use sulfates? I've been sulfates FREE for 5 years! Thank you 😍
Actually silicones really coat the hair cuticle and are quite hard to remove without a harsh sulphate or a lot of physical manipulation. Do a sulphate shampoo and then rinse with an apple cider rinse (1 tbl to 8oz water) to smooth the cuticle down after you moisturize with a deep conditioner.
@@lailapastor4233 washing your hair with baking soda will get the silicone off as well, it does have an tendency to dry the hair out so you have to make sure you moisturize well afterwards
I want to go zero waste but devacurl and shea moisture work wonders for my hair. I'm scared to change my routine, because of the journey I went through to finally figure out what works for my hair. Anyway, any tips on starting out? Or what to do with empy containers?
I haven’t gone zero waste yet, mostly because I test different products and haven’t found a strong alternative conditioning product yet. But I would say to ease yourself into it, go half and half for a while whilst you build up the confidence with the new things.
Thanks for this video. Did you try to mix the rye flour with cold water instead of warm. What does it change in your opinion ? I cannot find on the web any information
Hi! thanx for the video, you've got a very similar hair colour as mine)) though the curls are stronger)) I've read a recipe with rye flour mixed with herbs. haven't tried it yet, dunno what to do first)
I get my rye flour from Bakers Authority, a local bakers' supply shop in Queens, NY. Their flour is always really fresh because of high turnover and the prices are reasonable.
Found this article on washing and making rye flour shampoo - it is a little easier than straining the mixture - what do you think? wastelandrebel.com/en/nopoo-hair-wash-using-rye-flour/
You could try one of those stick blenders. Just make sure you have a large container so that it doesn't sploosh everywhere! Do you remember those old hand crank blenders? I'm sure that would work like a charm. They're a bit hard to find tho.
The whole purpose of natural no poo methods is to avoid dangerous chemicals yet you went through all that work just to put cancer back in your hair. What?...

What type of rye flour do you use?? Dark or white? So you don’t do the straining part, with the milk bag?

I think you could do it with cold, but then you'd have to leave it for a lot longer to soak, the warmth probably just speeds up the process...
Any ideas for simple moisturizing body wash with limited ingredients just like the flour+water for hair?
I would recommend just a salt bath if you want the purest solution and maybe a goats milk soap if you need a little more cleansing action!

Does this helps to get rid of oily hair??
I can’t say I know the answer here, it works just the same as regular shampoo, it isn’t drying in any way. A clay wash may be better for oily hair.
@@alissaevelyn so, which clay should I use?
Divya Patodia I believe you can use any clay, but Rhassoul clay is used the most for hair I think
