    Very interesting concept of piping trout, never seen it before, well done, and a 5* video.
    Tickling Trout is illegal in NZ but can be done as surviving a lost in bush.
    It is not easy at all and can only be done during the time trout running up the river for spawning.
    As males fight each other in small streams and creeks, and have lost most of fat reserves and become exhausted, and lay motionless on the edges and corners to rest, then one can lay down and Feel for the tail of the exhausted trout and slowly slowly work one's way up to the bely of the fish in a motion like ""Tickling""and once one feels the bely, one has to be very fast and throw the fish out, on to the bank.
    It is near impossible to grab a big slimy, slippery fish.
    These fish are most of the time close to the surface as they rest, because they have swallowed a lot of air in a fast flow of spawning streams and need to rest and push back the air out.
    You need a lot of patient and good blood circulation as your hand get close to the cold water temperature of the creek.
    A lot of people claim they can do it to all the trouts but it is near impossible to do it to a fit and healthy fish, or better to say, in over 60 years of fishing, i have not seen it.
    I know some South American tribes do it but they poison the water.
    In many occasions we see big trouts of over 6 to 10 pounds, mostly aggressive Rainbows, totally exhausted from fight and ended up in the current as they have swallowed a lot of air and have to swim constantly to get themselves down to deeper water and usually end up dead.
    With best regards to all, all the way from Down Under, Tony.

      It's really sad to see fish worn out from the travelling and spawning activity and you're right that it is incredibly difficult to catch a fit fish by tickling it. Every time I have tried this year I have failed.
      The local streams around me used to be full of fish but they are all gone as mink and otters have cleaned out the streams. Unfortunately the two best streams near me have large waterfalls near the point where they meet the river so no more fish can get up to repopulate the streams so to find streams where there are lots of fish is a real bonus.

    I really enjoy your videos. Mainly I watch different practitioners to see others' takes on the methods other than what I use. I find it fantastic that you are passing this knowledge on to your boy. If I had the chance to have any parts of my life to do again, I would choose the times I spent with MY sons in the wild just so that I could enjoy them again. None of this 'do-over' to fix regrets for me!

      I hear you there and I reckon that I'd think more about what I was going to do as a job since 20 years of my life were spent being taken advantage of by others and mounting up debt which has only recently been cleared. That would have given me way more time with the family which is the most valuable time anyone can have.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am becoming that guy with the pressures of work unfortunately and good time like this spent with the children is all too precious and scarce as I am a taxi service for them now they are getting older and they themselves have a crazy amount of work from school to get through.
      The whole system of long work hours, crippling taxes, Prussian school system and spirit crushing TV is set up to limit family time and create weak minds so every time I get a chance to break them out of that cycle I take it....damn, I'm starting to sound like Alex Jones there, lol

    • @cromwell13649
      @cromwell13649 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its so nice to see Richard .This type of video has high value for me .So much better that watching supposed metal detecting videos that has ever other word of F---ing in it and watching a bunch of tossers getting legless .

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I thought all detectorists were find faking, alcoholic, emaciated sociopaths? Least that's what popular culture would have us believing.
      Its good to associate with genuine people who buck that popular trend and are down to earth people as that really does make up the majority in the hobby.
      Too bad the fools in the hobby often ruin it for the genuine guys.

    • @cromwell13649
      @cromwell13649 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happens in almost every sport but it seems to be prevalent in metal Detecting .This is a sport that is watched by a lot of kids.and there are idiots walking around with big rubber dicks dangling .What uncouth idiots they are . I am not a prude Richard and all for a laugh but keep stuff kids should not see private and not on film . I think it tells a lot about ones character when they do such things .

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what or who you are referring to as I watch only a select few detecting videos from people I trust. Most of the clowns involved in fakery or drunken antics are blocked and banned so they don't even show up in related videos now. Just ignore the ass clowns, man.

    This a lovely video and the shot of the brown trout holding station at the start brings back so many memories, I've been fishing more than 50 years and I've never seen anyone 'pipe fishing' before, It's great the way the little trout are released unharmed and barely stressed. I remember about forty years ago I was fishing a small rivers tidal stretch, it might even have began as a stream as small as this. Anyway the river was about ten feet wide and with the tide in, I suppose it was about five feet deep. The farmer was cutting blackthorn branches that were overgrowing the stream some way above where we were fishing. All sorts of leaves and twigs were drifting out on the ebbing tide and the little brown trout were having a field day. Suddenly with most of the tide out a sea trout which were rare in low water began leaping all over the pool, sometimes coming three feet out of the water, and splashing wildly. He gradually settled down and floated still barely breathing into the side. My friend reached down and grabbed the fish which weighed about two and a half pounds and was covered in sea lice. We killed him straight away and examined him from top to bottom to try and find out what had happened to him. After a while we locked down his throat and there with some small leaves attached was a blackthorn about two inches in length. It seems the sea trout for some reason grabbed the small cluster of floating leaves and choked on the needle sharp thorn they were attached to.........strange things really do happen now and again,....Once again I loved your video, nothing is as beautifiul as a wild brown trout from a little mountain stream

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn that was unfortunate for the seat trout but good for you if you had him to eat. I totally agree about brown trout from small streams as they are always very beautiful.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that is a story that sounds like it could have come from a religious text - like food being delivered to a starving man, lol
      Sometimes fish will eat all manner of strange things and it looks like that unfortunate one was testing something new which didn't end well. There may have been insects of some sort clinging to the part it ate maybe?
      Either way I bet you were very grateful for that gift.
      Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

    beautiful a proper childhood

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes indeed - I spent most of my childhood alone shooting, fishing and trapping so it was great to spend this time with my son.
      I wish we lived in a world where we could spend more time with our children instead of being at work all the time just to make ends meet but it is what it is - we're tricked into economic slavery and not many people manage to break free from that spell.
      We supported James (in this video) all through his footballing career and now he's playing football for the worlds best sports university (Loughborough) so it's all good.
      I can only wonder how many promising sportspeople have ended up working mundane jobs just because they couldn't get the support from their parents and that's why both myself and my wife always made the commitment for our children to aspire to greater things. When I think how many kids have had their dreams shattered because of the economic slavery system it is very sad.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and yes. Keeping the water right for marine fish is much more difficult but like anything the set-up is important. The better a tank and filter is set up the better it will perform and the less maintenance will be required.

      Not sure where your next comment went - comments disappear into the ether on TH-cam, lol.
      I vaguely remember fishing the river then and I think John Welch may have been there too. There were way more fish in then than there are now.

      This is in the upper Derwent Valley in County Durham. It's one of the only places in my area where there is actually fish in the streams as so many have been wiped out by mink and otters. The area I filmed this is well managed by the local gamekeepers so has an incredible range of wildlife.

      Frogs can jump well and toads tend to walk, toads have warty skin and yellow eyes, frogs have pointy head sand toads are more rounded.

    whats the point of catching those small trout? too small to eat so why would anyone devise such a method? are they any good in a pond? brown trout, or are they too aggressive to other small fishes

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not a method which would be used outside of a survival situation and is purely for catching fish in small streams or crayfish in rivers for eating. If you're hungry the size is not important.
      I have a decent sized brown trout in my pond and plenty of rainbow / blue trout and they are all going to eat the rudd / roach fry once they get a taste for them but there are still plenty of fry left. They need well oxygenated water and my pond would probably be the minimum size I would recommend for stocking trout. It is plenty deep enough at around 6m.

    Hi Richard great video ! at the end with the camera all over the shop footage , slow footage right down to speed .25 under "settings" freeze frame at 11.28 . Dog possibly , under fern . under branch with bird an Eye , right down at red line , teeth & 2 nostrils together . someones puppy perhaps ?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did see two werewolf sized dogs the next time we visited and I have no idea what they were - looked like st bernard crossed with wolfhound and they weren't a pretty sight.
      I've slowed down the video and gone almost frame for frame around the time you suggest and I couldn't see anything. I should have my eyes tested.

      Hi Richard , Could they be these Dogman type creature .? i have other videos of people in the UK. Saying they have heard a strange " yip ,yip" sound not a bark ! coming from the woods at night. .Have you heard any such sound ?The site i have been watching is called Whisper Walkers .UK have a look at that site . strange things are happening the forest of the UK. Can you keep me posted on what you find out ?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they were definitely just huge dogs accompanied by a couple aged about 40 and a small pug. The pug looked like an ant next to the huge dogs.
      I tried to search for that site and all that comes up is Walkers crisps and a TH-cam channels with one video as well as a couple of facebook links. If you have a link to a proper website that would be great. I didn't visit the facebook one to see if that is the one you're referring to as I avoid facebook like the plague.

    Not sure wtf is wrong with youtube, I'm on my second account as my main one isn't showing your videos (or any of my subscriptions) and this was one of my first ever sub'd channels yeeeears ago :/ convinced it's something to do with the xbox YT app d#cking about with it... Microsoft... my own fault really.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed the video and it is indeed a great technique.
      TH-cam sometimes doesn't show comments which have been made or will duplicate them so I'm leaving new video comments now for 5-6 days before answering them and that seems to collate most of them to be available to answer.

    in the so.eastern states of the us . fishermen get into the rivers and put their hand under shelves where the big catfish like to hang out. the fisherman puts his hand in and the catfish will go after it [ they call it noodleing } many a fine catfish has been caught using this method 25-35 lbs and they are delicious fried . we also have a non native specie called the asian carp they literally jump into your boat but are generally snagged with the slingbow asian carp are a very invasive species ,some are migrating northward up the mississippi even towards the great lakes which would be an ecological nightmare. in massachusetts there is a large population of great white sharks they prey upon the protected seal population , and even killer whales are now seen in massachusetts waters.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have the full range of fish there, man.
      I've seen people noodling on the TV and the size of fish they pull out is incredible and I see some people have even been drowned by really large fish holding them under so they are brave to do that method.

  • @Zaku186
