I rank wf 18 in the middle of the pack. For a modern world finals its one of the best ones, but that doesn't make it thet great. Neil should've won

I personally think that World Finals 18 was as great as it was partially because it was my only World Finals. If you were there, it was a different experience than if you weren’t. It was also a big deal because of the time it happened. The last 3-4 World Finals’ were seen as disappointing and this event was a breath of fresh air for fans considering all that happened. Great runs, great moments in all three competitions, and an improved track made it a vast improvement. But I definitely agree on some points you made and it was a very interesting video. (Fun fact: the racing portion of the event happened 6 years ago to the day this was uploaded).

I’ll start by saying that some people’s reactions to your ugly chassis videos was one of the most stupid controversies I’ve seen in a while, and I hear about gaming and sci fi controversies almost daily. I personally enjoyed it as I’m a bit too into chassis myself. (Especially that dipshit from Facebook. I saw that when the video was posted there.)
Anyways, I sincerely agree with you that this event isn’t all special. While a lot of my complains about 2017+ Monster Jam sound like ones Adan’s from the 2000’s have, I got into Monster Jam as that “golden age” subsided. My first televised event I saw was Arlington 2011 and I watched it until my family got rid of cable around late 2017 early 2018. I grew up with the madness of late 2011-2016. I say that timeframe as even though WF15-16 had their problems, the regular seasons were great. Then came 2017. Either I’d forgotten by World Finals or I hadn’t really watched that season, I didn’t know Tom and Dennis wouldn’t be there. Maybe Dennis, but definitely not Tom. That’s fine, there’s plenty of good drivers and veterans left. But then came the repetition. And the lack of momentum. Scott doing the four backflips was probably his way of messing with scores, but it also further devalued the move. And then my biggest problem with a lot of runs, especially from newer drivers. They’re so focused on singular things that their runs are segmented. There’s no flow, or even throttle rhythm to convey that they’re trying that hard. WF 7 isn’t my favorite just because Tom and Dennis each won a title or that there was a good amount of carnage. It had an amazing lineup, and nobody had too bad a performance. Sure, some got screwed over by mechanical failure, the track, or bad luck, but there wasn’t a run where the driver looked lost. Also, racing was amazing with plenty of close races.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, too many runs are remembered for one moment rather than the sum of its parts, which I think is the main problem with freestyle today. Combined with fan only judging, drivers that aren’t as talented or experienced play the system of getting one noteworthy moment in and getting a win, and I feel that formula is the fault of WF 18. I have no desire to revisit any post-WF 15 shows, but that’s second lowest only to WF 20, because at least 18 doesn’t make me mad.

as soon as cars, busses, vans, RV's, motorhomes and all metal was removed from the tracks, I knew it would make freestyles too predictable and boring. Around 2010 is when I knew the best days of MJ were over, especially for WF events.

Not only that, they took the "motorsport" part out of Monster Jam. In any sport you never give up. I remember when Ryan Anderson broke a wheel off at WF 15. He rolled over but kept trying to get the truck back on its three wheels until the motor died. That was as Scott Douglass would put it "raw determination, and refusal to quit". Now they won't let broken trucks run except once in a blue moon like Mark List in El Toro Loco in Glendale 2022. I've noticed in 2023 they've started using more cars. If they would let trucks run while being destroyed, the motorsport part would come back. They also need to bring back the professional judging. Yeah it wasn't always right but it was better than this Judgeszone bullcrap.

I think Feld is finally fidgeting with the scores a little to keep the fairness. Scoring seems more fair this year but they haven’t made any changes with their scoring system that I can tell. I wouldn’t be too disappointed if in fact Feld was internally scoring the runs fairly & the JudgeZone scoring was just a decal. Feld bought into the element of “let’s include the fans and make them feel part of the show”… not very effective. This system of voting doesn’t work because majority of people at monster jam events are not actual fans, just families and kids going out to see an exciting show, and they are not familiar with what to expect or how competitive it is. I think this reflects the wildly high scores from whoever does first backflip in FS. I remember hearing announcers on the microphone in the past saying something like, “you are the ones that are voting, fans. This is your outcome”… alluding to the idea it is the fans fault for messing up the votes.

  • @blakecarraz
    @blakecarraz ปีที่แล้ว +6

Objectively, statistically, however you want to break it down - World Finals 18 was the best WF that's ever happened and likely ever will happen. You have the best freestyle competition of any WF, one of the top racing competitions of any WF, a showdown that fits in the upper-half of showdown competitions, and 2 encores that sit near the top of their respective encore days when compared to others.
Focusing solely on the MAJOR highlights (frontflip, corkscrew, reverse backflip, etc.) and acting like those are the only elements that count as a 'highlight' is going to immediately make a lot of/every other WF freestyle competition pretty terrible considering this was the only World Finals that had a laundry list of those moves (WF17 only had a corkscrew outside of backflips, and every other WF with a backflip ramp/container only had backflips outside of Tom's moonflip from 2022).
And if you're just not a fan of it because it doesn't have your favorite truck(s)/driver(s) from when you were a kid, or because it didn't have trailers and R/V's and crush cars... I don't know what to tell you besides grow up. If a truck gets 30 feet of air I don't understand why it matters what it got that air off of, or any other move for that matter.
This community is so biased towards nostalgia and jaded towards anything remotely modern that it's borderline impossible for anyone to enjoy anything anymore.

      @@ericfording3556 with pleasure:
      1. Blackwell - sky wheelie into a small save, a backflip (albeit over rotated one), and a generally good run up until the crash that filled most of time.
      2. Bryce - sidewall save into the fountain, and again overall good run that filled time.
      3. Randy - besides another overall good run, front somersault recovery, sidewall save off the bus, and fiery explosion at the end.
      4. Becky - an overall very exciting run, successful backflip, and crash at the end (yes I’m counting crash because if you don’t, like I mentioned in my original comments, most every other WF is going to not have anything to note for a lot of/all of their runs).
      5. Tristan - even though it was small first stoppie into a moonwalk at the WF, his first ever successful backflip, giant sky wheelie into the fountain, and again an overall great time-filling run that got criminally underscored.
      6. BJ - one of the few poor runs, crashed way too early.
      7. Colt - excellent technical run, complete with one of the best downramps of the middle jump from the night, and a picture perfect backflip. Ended with a really good sky wheelie off the side of a table-top.
      8. Creten - this was Creten’s best run at the WF up to this point where he filled time. Great sky wheelie and successful backflip.
      9. Buyten - a GREAT run for how much time he filled, with his first and only ever backflip.
      10. Buddy - another of the few poor runs, but was actually decent until he crashed too early.
      11. Zimmer - good run until an early crash, highlighted by a spectacular recovery attempt in the process.
      12. Tyler - an honestly incredible run for the time he filled, far better than any WF rookie has a right to have.
      13. Koehler - Koehler’s best ever WF run with insane air, backflip, flat tire craziness.
      14. Candice - just a normal Candice run so nothing to note but also nothing negative since again… all of her runs are mid.
      15. Rosalee - another excellent rookie run with one of her first successful competition backflips and a corkscrew attempt.
      16. Colton - definitely a disappointing run for Colton considering his season, but alas still had a good run while it lasted with a couple of small saves on weird rebounds.
      17. Lee - frontflip and backflip, outside of that just a mid run.
      18. Bari - good run with the recovery towards the beginning as well.
      19. Coty - great run for what he filled, including the best stoppie we’d seen at the WF yet off the back of the middle.
      20. Brianna - another really good run, complete with its own backflip and corkscrew attempt.
      21. Fortune - we don’t usually see much spectacular from Fortune so the fact that we even got a highlight from the wheel coming off and bopping him on the roof is a plus.
      22. Cam - Cam with his usual insanity, including a backflip into a recovery and a corkscrew following that up.
      23. Morgan - another GREAT run, including a save off the backflip with one of the wheels catching the containers, and then ending the run with a sidewall crash that was almost save of the night.
      24. Marc - another good run for what it filled, unfortunate breakage on the landing of the backflip but had a very textbook run up until that about 90 seconds in.
      25. Weenk - tough luck for Weenk rolling over early, but it was still a spectacular crash as he tends to do.
      26. Ryan - Ryan’s literally never had a bad freestyle, and this was no exception. Easily the best run that didn’t fill time we’d seen at the WF up to this point.
      27. Buetow - 4 backflips, and an insane sky wheelie crash at the end.
      28. Pauken - unfortunately short run, but he still delivered the biggest jump of the night and a crazy crash/almost recovery.
      29. Adam - had a decent run with good air while it lasted, just didn’t make it last long as Adam has had a propensity to do at the WF.
      30. Mikey - actually a REALLY good run for the time he filled. 2 backflips and a great sidewall save.
      31. Neil - the winning run, period. Great momentum and air, reverse backflip, and crazy save to end the run.
      32. LeDuc - had a great run going for what he filled, 2 backflip attempts.
This all said, this World Finals also has the most amount of total FS time actually used by competitors of any WF. Meaning this WF saw more FS than any other WF that’s ever happened.
Another note on that is if we’re just focusing on FS then we’re focusing on literally less than half of the whole WF.

Maaaan that trend really took me back to when all the controversy started my opinion is it shouldn't be a run winning move it should've only be scored as one freaking move especially if you only do 1, not to mention we don't ever see moves that evolved from it anymore (the corkscrew, reverse backflip, the half gator with a twist that creten did in a past world finals) MJ wants to make the backflip sooo special still but it literally isn't anymore especially when you have them doing it on arena tours (which they pick and choose which shows to clear because Albuquerque just happened and our arena is big enough for a backflip but MJ refuses to clear us).
Backflips aren't special neither is moonwalks, stoppies, poppers, and reverse poppers they're just moves now that everyone uses.

I get Mad Scientist had that Wow moment and a Win is a Win can't take it away but when that is your only highlight of a run? That's abit of a problem especially if other runs before/after had more moments to talk about. I have seen "worse" ... i'll never forget Madusa's WF5 run was roughly 50'ish seconds, knocked Bounty Hunter off the container stack and became a Co-Champ for it. Again, a win is a win and alotta drivers who have won are likeable to quite some degrees... but bullshit is bullshit no matter how you sugar coat it.

What made this event good what that this was one of the few times almost every driver went hard or proved something. Rookies and veterans alike all had solid runs, but when everyone has a solid run, people often divert to the WOW moments and forget everything else. Apart from the trucks you already said had “good runs, here are a few (in detail) that you missed.
    1. Becky’s first main field appearance/her first WF Freestyle
    2. Bryce Kenny’s freestyle
    3. Jimmy creeton laying down his first Solid WF run in YEARS.
    4. Tristin Englands rookie year(showdown/freestyle)
    5. Morgan Kane’s “assisted” backflip
    6. Colt stephens Freestyle
Are we also gonna look past the fact that they had the awards ceremony LIVE on Friday? That was kinda cool.
Yes, some runs more stagnat than others, and yes, some runs were only known for their wow moments, but when you look at how many driver actively filled the clock, broke spectacularly, or pulled off a crazy WOW moment, this event has more that stand out that others.
