  • Gordon the big engine and Thomas the tank engine are puffing home together after having reconciled from their previous incidents and have formed an alliance. They soon arrive back at the sheds to discover decorations are being put up and painters are everywhere. Thomas wonders what is happening but Percy tells him to remain silent, saying that they are about to find out. Right on cue, Sir Topham Hatt calls for full attention and announces to everyone that the Queen of England is coming to visit the Island of Sodor. Arter the announcement, the engines are left wondering who will get the honor to pull the Royal Train. Edward says he is too old to pull important trains anymore and Gordon says he is still in disgrace. James thinks he will be chosen for the job, but Henry disagrees, claiming James cannot climb hills after his incident with the autumn leaves and then brags that he will be the one to pull the Royal Train and have a new coat of paint too.
The next day, rain pours down on the Island. Henry is at Knapford station, waiting for his next train and so, his driver and fireman decide to cover up the cab to keep dry. There is also a painter on a ladder above the line and as he is repainting the station canopy, Henry lets off steam, which blows high into the air, making the painter lose sight and it causes him to lose his balance. He then falls on top of Henry and his paint pot falls on the green engine too, completely covering his dome with white paint, much to both Henry's shock and the painter's fury. Sir Topham Hatt, having seen everything walks up and decides that Henry's appearance will not be appropriate for the Royal Train and that he must make other arrangements, much to Henry's disappointment. Thomas and Gordon are waiting for Sir Topham Hatt and as they both speak at the same time, he orders them to allow one of them to speak at a time. Gordon then asks if Thomas can have his branch line back and Thomas asks if Gordon can pull coaches again. Sir Topham Hatt thinks for a moment and as he can see that both engines are sorry, he informs them that they deserve a treat. He then tells the two blue engines that on the day the Queen arrives, Edward will go in front to clear the line, Thomas will look after the coaches and Gordon will pull the Royal Train.
The great day arrives and the engines are busy bringing in people from all over the island for the special occasion. Thomas is hard at work too, sorting out everyone's coaches in the yard. Before long, Edward steams in and announces that the Queen has arrived. Moments later, Gordon pulls into the station with the Queen and her train, complete with a spotless coat of paint, white painted buffers and carrying the Royal Arms on each side of his smokestack. Sir Topham Hatt, who is waiting on the platform, stands to attention and welcomes the Queen. Her majesty thanks him for a splendid ride and asks to see all the engines. When Percy blows his whistle and Toby rings his bell to cheer for the Queen, Henry and James initially shush them angrily, trying to enjoy the event in peace. But Percy and Toby ignore them by carrying the noise on, prompting the other engines to join in on the cheers. When it is time for the Queen to leave, she speaks especially to Thomas, courtesy of providing her coaches, then to Edward for clearing the line and finally to Gordon, who takes her home, and all of Sir Topham Hatt's engines whistle in delight and cannot be more proud.
