  • I review EA Sports WRC and let you know if it's worth getting and what's good and what's bad about this title. If you are fed up with the flood of anodyne, non-critical tripe surrounding this game, then you will probably enjoy this video that I tailor-made for intellectually high-class tea drinkers and people able to look at video games in a somewhat critical manor.

Great video. Are we really going to sit here and pretend this has a anything on WRC Generations? Generations is dog walking this game. All the bullying from 2.0 fans all of this time. That smug, “ you’ll see how it’s really done” attitude all of this time, for this?

You are, of course, right about everything GM. The one great thing about the game is it's £40. That papers over a lot of cracks for me. BUT ...
Things that annoy me - many sections of landscapes look like they're from a 15 year old game - a hillside with trees looking like they're a placeholder rough cut and paste first attempt they forgot to go back and finish. The over exposure of the roads as seen from inside the car is staggeringly bad. Why is there no option where you could drive any stage at different times of the day instead of the time trial midday fixed option when the stark lighting shows up the shoddy graphics in places?
I don't get a real sense of place from any of the tracks, there are not enough random visual elements on stages as there would be in real life - it all seems be to a formula, like the stages were procedurally generated by a non creative AI.
I do enjoy the game somewhat, but all the time I'm thinking about the sub-par handling, the "unfinished" graphics in some stages and the poor optimisation.
Please Codemasters can you finish the game soon and patch the hell out of it, you could so easily have had the best rally game ever on your hands, you still can with a little polish, care and professionalism.

      Very mixed bag graphically.

I don't always agree with you, GM, but this time we are in complete agreement. It looks worse, plays worse, and performs worse than DR2.0, and is quite frankly a disappointment.
Also what has been highlighted to me through other WRC reviews from the "simfluencer" populous, is that they appear to be more interested in keeping those pre-release keys flowing rather than actually doing their job and telling us the truth.

About the stages in game, for example in the Portuguese rally the stages ingame are not the real rally stages, they dont even have the Fafe stage with the jump in the end. if it is a Licenced WRC game i can't imagine the reason they did not use the real stages.... even generation was spot on in this

    • @socks2441

its rumoured that stage was made for dirt rally 3 before they got the wrc licence. hence they couldnt use the 'official' stage, but chose a real road nearby instead. but all the other stages were made after obtaining the licence and therefore are based on the real stages.

Agree with you on the inconsistent stage quality, Dirt Rally 2 stages have more thought put into them, comparing the New Zealand stages. WRC NZ stages all feel the same even within a single stage it gets repetitive.

    • @euphoreonz
      @euphoreonz 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

'thought'...? They're all real stages, both DR2.0 and WRC. There is no 'thought', it's pure mapping. Yes, DR2.0 has more detailed stages, but they did not look at all like the actual location. Colour grading was all off especially. NZ is one of the poorer locations in EA WRC, passable... but feels rushed.
You're having a laugh otherwise though, the EA WRC stages are 100x better than Dirt Rally boring flat stages. We had so few locations at launch, then just got remasters. Mexico, Portugal, Chile, Indonesia, Kenya, Italy, Corsica... all great. Snow locations are great. There are a few underwhelming ones like NZ, Estonia, Croatia. None of them are BAD, they're all real stages but need more stage dressing and foliage/tree detail.

    • @JallyTee
      @JallyTee 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@martsum398 The road mapping and elevation data might be "real" but I have driven through some of these stages as I live in New Zealand and some stages only 40mins away. DR2 matches up much closer, WRC didn't match up, the visuals look way off for NZ roads, also the way the car feels on the gravel, DR2 feels closer to what I have experienced. I'm still enjoying the game Kenya is a blast plus a bunch of other countries but to say the stages are 100x better that did make me giggle.

My biggest gripe is that the stages are just boring. Like, every once in a while you'll go through a small town or something, and it's like cool, but then you go back to the barren wastelands that is Codemaster stage design. The attention to detail just isn't there. There is no character to these stages and the immersion factor is low. The level of detail at @20:37 for that section of the Japan stage is how the whole game should have been. So just like the AI, the quality consistency is all over the place. I honestly had the feeling this would be state of the game pre launch when I saw the price tag. Not even a full price game tells me they didn't even have much hope in it or that theyre gonna rely on microtransactions in the future.
Edit: I posted this comment right before you got to the stage design and yes, I agree lmao

I just don't agree with the force feedback bit, it's so vague and muted that it's not very helpful or realistic feeling, at least in my experience. The tracks are varied but feel kinda empty and barren. Regarding the driving physics, I think it improved over DR2 but still far from realistic and the handbrake reactions are just plain weird. unpopular opinion, DR2.0 stages were abysmal, bland and soulless... but the graphical fidelity and effects pulled it through. this has better stages than DR2.0, but far worse stages than WRC Generations. Kt racing nailed stages, codemasters with all their money and prowess and even with this license cant seem to pull a decent one out of their ass. and now, ea sports wrc has the most flat, boring, blurry graphics i've seen in a racing game in 10 years and its very obvious how bad these stages suck. yes the game stutters, but that can be patched in, my problem is that the game is fundamentally worse than the last 4 rally games i've played in every single possible way. EA crunch, and deadlines fucked this game. Hopefully they afford codemasters the time they need to pull this one through, because as of right now... it's FUCKING EMBARRASSING. 2024 is a fucking month away.

I agree. On PS5 it looks quite soft and blurry. Road surfaces and materials seem to be lacking detail, maybe it is bump mapping or an anisotropic filtering issue, but they look bland. It seems the internal rendering resolution is low. Some assets look very low poly and generally it has a lack of polish. This, combined with poor performance is bizarre. The actual handing, FFB, and driving can be quite fun, but as someone with a full rig, with dashboards, wind, and transducers, having no UDP is a big miss. Having no support for Moza wheels is utterly bizarre. The audio is excellent, but on the whole it feels like either the devs don’t have enough experience with Unreal engine to optimise it properly, or it has been rushed out. Very disappointing and in several ways it does feel like a side or downgrade from previous titles. I also really enjoyed rallycross in DR 2.0, so it is sad not to see that.

Another thing this game is lacking is attention to detail. Stages feel a bit boring, setups/tyre choices are very limited in choices, the in car cluster displays normal engine temperature while the UI says it's overheating, the livery editor is lackluster, the career in general is badly designed in both UI and gameplay loop, and so on.

I've got over 1000 hours in Dirt Rally 2.0 so have a bit of a different perspective. I started playing DR2 when it was mostly finished development so it was much more mature than WRC. You're completely right about the performance issues, probably my biggest gripe with the game so far. It should run better than it does, though I've found as I play more there's less stutters for whatever reason.
The AI is another point where it's a big step back. I'm playing on a controller which I'm not used to as I currently don't have the space for a rig so I'm much slower than I would be on a wheel, yet I'm smoking the AI by a ridiculous amount. DR2 really had the AI in a better spot. 100 AI was very quick, made few mistakes, but was ultimately beatable as long as you drove perfectly. WRC AI is way slower and less consistent. Its a bit disappointing because the single player campaign itself is a lot more complex and I find myself actually wanting to play it. Hopefully this is something they can tweak after some feedback.
I can't really comment on the physics much yet as I'm on a completely different input device. The foundation feels good for the most part however. The handbrake is miles ahead of the previous WRC entries unrealistic behaviour where it would automatically make the car do a 180.
The graphics are a bit mixed for me. Some moments it looks like a shot straight out of a WRC broadcast yet at other times looks worse than DR2. By default the brightness is too high and some stages are really overexposed. DR2 had a similar issue with some stages like Sweden and Greece.
The stages themselves I'm actually really happy with. They feel much more immersive than DR2. The roadside assets look much better. The degradation system is better too, it feels like the ruts are right about where an actual driver would go vs DR2 where they were obviously put there by the level designer. Some of the posts are really solid and the bushes.
The damage feels more forgiving in the non hardcore mode, though the visual effects of damage are improved. I haven't clocked enough hours in hardcore to get a good feeling for it. The game does punish you in slightly different ways. As you mentioned there's a few less hidden logs on the roadside. Thankfully they've added a cut penalty system and the car noticeably slows down when in the weeds.
The tires are improved from DR2 where soft could be run in basically every situation outside an extreme club setup with 12 long stages and no services. Though its missing the ability to choose what tires you bring as spares and ability to choose the compound per wheel.
The clubs system, where most long term players end up paying the majority of their hours, has had some improvements. They added a really cool feature in Racenet where you can view the replays of your run and other players and see some telemetry. You can also do more from the game itself like setup the championship vs having to do it on the website.
I am missing the daily, weekly and monthly events however. Moments is supposed to be a replacement but it doesn't have the same feel as you get multiple attempts. The beauty of the daily events was you had one shot at a stage vs everyone so the stakes felt higher vs moments which is basically a themed time trial.
Overall if you're new to rally games I'd say wait a few months and buy it sometime next year when things have been fixed up. If you loved DR2 this will feel fresh thanks to all the new stages and the massive car selection, but only pick it up now if you can look past the lack of polish.

The handbrake in kt wrc games wrc10 etc, can be set on your clutch pedal, and be analog, and pretty good really, progressive, you can even adjust the input in settings as u please.
The road side assets might be a bit better in some cases as u said, but its much more important to have fluid fps.
And, to have detailed road surface physically, short abrupt dips, bumps, grooves, etc.
I agree with gm that it looks too leveled roads in this, making stages much less interesting, fun, challenging.

I always thought dr2 had a wierd feeling to the cars that i cant get over. Recently i saw a video about the handling, where they broke it down to that the cars rotate around the center of the car no matter the speed or surface driven on. Wich in a real car doesnt happen, it rotates around a point outside of the rear of the car. unless you are in a slide (over/under rotation). It might be the same in this game.

Another way of saying it is: the tires don’t have individual slip angles - there’s only one slip angle, and that’s the angle of the car as a whole (unless handbraking). It’s like you’re carving turns in a speedboat. This may be acceptable if you’re on snow or gravel, but on tarmac it’s bizarre.

This game is trying to be Dirt Rally 3.0 and WRC 12 at the same time and that's where the problem is to begin with, I don't think that's possible to ever work. One game is more sim/simcade (DR) and one game is more arcade (WRC) and EA WRC is trying to please both worlds. They took the physics from DR 2.0 and toned them down for the controller boys, which basically feels like they added grip wherever they could : on asphalt, on gravel, .... even with all assist off. And that makes it all feel not hot, not cold. On some stages it feels like they have a rail-track and you are just the conductor steering to stay on that rail they want you to drive on. For instance in Sweden or even on gravel stages, just a little off to the side, slighty touching the boundaries of the road which in many cases just look to be a little pile of snow or dirt , you immediately flip over or spin out several times. Of course, with the game being 40-45 Bucks, you don't feel ripped off and can still have fun in it But if this game would be 100-120 Bucks, like some other racing titles out there, i am sure the reviews would be different

It is uncanny. But I think for every single point about the handling is the exact feedback I'm getting with about 15 hours of play time.
The snap back to grip is sooo extremely aggressive. That like said in the video, it makes me feel like the car doesn't want me to power drift. Yes you can rotate the car, but with default tuning most of the time when I think I'm getting into a slide, it recovers before I can even realize it and then next thing I know that counter steer I was in the process of doing was total overkill and I'm just moving off the racing line.
Same with the handbrake. I feel like I'd have to hold it through quarter of the hairpin to get the rotation I want without fear of the snap back to grip popping up.
I did see a few comments of people claiming to have driven rally stages IRL, and they claim EA WRC is infact "more realistic" with it's handbrake and drifting physics than does RBR. Which really confused me as the only thing I've heard about RBR from sim racers is that it's the best there is physics wise. The person who said this went to say that they feel that in RBR you're constantly driving on wet grass, or with extremely old & worn tires.
I mean I was a bit shocked with RBR at first. But with 100 some hours of practice, I got the hang of it. You really need to load those front tires to get some good grip in turns. And the handbrake definitely doesn't require you to be yanking it on it too much, a quick jab is all you need.
But which is it? Is RBR going too far with it's grip physics, or is EA WRC too grippy? I mean both can't true.
Probably not a popular take. But at least with the suspension & weight transfer physics, I found the handling of WRCG to be more relatable to RBR than it was with DR2.0 & EA WRC. I was actually mad at the handbrake in WRCG at first, but when playing RBR I realized that maybe it was supposed to be like that.

Would be very odd that only the people on the Subreddit of the game enjoyed the stages.
The common opinion was that the stages on this game are the best in any rally game game ever, don't understand how you can think the lifeless stages in DR2 or even the good but in my view qjite a bit inferior stages in Gemerations, are better than this. About the game modes, I think Rallycross could've come back or the super special stages like in Colin McRae Rally 2.0 and Colin McRae: Dirt and would be nice to see Pikes Peak and Hill climb to come back.
Also I wanna see a modern rally game, like DR2 with the system that Colin McRae Dirt 2 had, the opponent cars racing on the track real time and you can overtake them or even collide with them.
And would be nice to see other things like broken cars on the side of the road, deer and wild animals running across the road, the drons flying above like DR2, and even some things like when the car is rolling over the driver and the co-driver reacts to it like pulling thier hands close or putting thier hand on the roof, or the co-driver turning the pages of the pace notes, or when the cars door opens on the side the drivers closing it when it's possible, not just snapping back in place.
And I could list a few more stuff from some of the older Codemaster games.

Just saying... cause unlike every dumbass in this comment sections I do know how to drive a rally car and I do powerslide my car any time I want and it doesn't regain grip until I want it to... hmmm... maybe I'm special??? Oh wait... I know how to tune and fucking DRIVE the car to do all those things...
do the words THROTTLE MANAGEMENT and WHEEL MANAGEMENT in a hairpin turn mean ANYTHING to you???
people complain about everything and don't bother to think if they're doing things right or not... stupidity knows no boundaries in 2023...

@@socks2441 It's literally the same gravel physics as DR2, maybe with some slight tweaks to reduce grip in some scenarios. Go set Traxion's recommended FFB settings, and then tweak from there. The FFB is having a disproportionate impact on people's impression of the physics in WRC

Thank you. After 4 hours on a really high end system, I wondered why do many reviews portray a different (I.e. glowing) experience. Sound aside, and ignoring issues like stuttering that will get fixed, the design is dismal. I second all your observations. I would add that they picked “dusty tan” as the color of all road surfaces - tarmac or dirt or gravel, new or old road. In addition the environment feels like a 3D computer graphics model mated with a water color painting from the 1800’s. We have the haze that prevails everywhere and under almost all weather conditions and time of day. It took a while for the kinks to get worked out of WRCG, but other than for multi-player and sound, WRCG is far more immersive, fun, exciting, and detailed.

Spot on on the colours. So many different vibrant locations around nearly all continents and in minds of CodEmAsters they all have the same water paint dulled colours, exactly... Jeez it's depressing to find out Chile, Kenya, Greece and Indonesia all have the same ground and vegetation colours 😂

Yes, even just looking at videos, the tracks have a very different feel and look to them then the ones from Kylotonn. The tracks from Kyloton felt real, diverse, alive and just more pleasing. With this game, you can easily see the repitition of the assets. And with rally games, it's all about the tracks and their environments.

I think we should stop buying unfinished games, i tryed 5 times to play this game but everything is just terrible, the Ffb, the stearing, physics, grafics, performance. Not even Nvidia has a driver support for this game. The smart thing to do is wait for fixes and try later.
I run this game on 4090 and 7950x3d and still very choppy experience.

I think one of the biggest shames is that the fantastic Kylotonn games and their brilliant stages have now just been forgotten and were ignored by so many of the racing playerbase at the time.

Yep. Once the kinks got worked out of generations, it is fantastic, and scales equally well to full rigs (motion, gforces, wind, dashes, triples, 4K). I wondered whether EA Rally meant I would have two rally games to play. Not at this point!

.. the kinks never got worked out of generations though?? I raised hell on twitter and reddit like many others regarding:
      1. throttle bug (unresponsive and 0 throttle below 30-40% pedal/trigger actuation)
      2. clutch does not actuate unless held for 1-2 seconds on controller
      3. rain braking is BAD. rain stages look downright TERRIBLE (no transparency in rain, appears shiny/white)
      4. boost bug, nuff said
      5. disgraceful sound design ( engines/gravel effects)
      6. Button mapping/audio settings reset (controller/wheel presets reset constantly too) ps5
Many Many people have complained about these issues and you know what they did? They pulled the plug on supporting the game after like a year of bullshit updates. The gameplay was fun, but all the bugs I ran into genuinely ruined my experience. I particularly enjoy time trial leaderboards which were unreliable at best given the bugs mentioned above. Lost allllll my hope in the devs of generations. wrc 23 is muchhhhhh better so far. @@netlawman2001

I totally agree… the stages in WRC Generations are just so much more fun and not monotonous. The handling model in WRC Generations might not be what some people would say is “realistic”, but you really felt like you were making the car dance around the bends… and the single player career mode was good and engaging too.
I also feel like we’ve lost out… it would’ve been better to keep Kyloton on the WRC licence, and then had Dirt Rally 3.0 (this game) as an alternative…

Totally agree with the snapness while drifting or handbraking. The surface of the stages are worse than DR 2.0 but better than WRC Generations, it should be like real surfaces according to John Amstrong. And I am also missing the random events, I wanna see DNF cars and all other stuff from DR 2.0. I'm having fun, but at the moment it needs a lot or patches. I believe the titel is launched sooner than it supposed to due license and contract with the WRC Promoter or something.
