"He wasn't even a soldier." Boy, this i cried, when I saw that scene! xS And I cried even more when he walked into his tent afterwards and smashed the record. I love this piece of music so much - its so beautiful.
I first heard this watching the series finale of M*A*S*H too and fell in love with it. Watching Charles work with the Chinese soldiers was so nice and to see his pain when they died was heart breaking. He was left changed as he said "for me music was always a refuge from this miserable experience, now it will always be a reminder"
I'm writing my master's dissertation on M*A*S*H and couldn't resist mentioning this storyline. Wonderfully done. Charles breaking the record gets me every time.
Charles aka David Allen Ogden Stiers was an American actor and conductor. He appeared in numerous productions on Broadway, and originated the role of Feldman in The Magic Show, in which he appeared for four years between 1974 and 1978.
God bless Mozart, Charles and the whole m.a.s.h cast that's past what a great character he was you can hate him but it's always hard when he's TRUE humanity plays out so raw and brilliant as was all of the cast but I wouldn't be listening to this If it wasn't for his character just brilliant
Farewell Goodnight and Amen is one of the only films ive ever cryed while watching. Charles changes so much from when he comes into to MASH this little side storie summed charles up beuatifully thoses few barss are all that were needed
I also loved this episode, showed the true depth of Charles, and it brought very good closure into the mash series. i own all 11 seasons of Mash and watch them alot when nothing else is on:) aIso, for those who didnt know, The final episode of Mash has the record for most viewers for a single episode with 121.6 million american viewers on feb.28, 1983.
I remember where I was watching that last episode. I was in college and my boyfriend brought his tv to my dorm room. I think every person on our floor was watching it.
I first heard this on the last episode of Mash and spent months trying to find out what it was called. Even though the show went off the air when i was 5, its one of my favs and i cry every time Charles was unable to save the musicians.
I'm not sure who was responsible for that part in the script, but it was pure genius to contrast the smooth, flowing melody of this piece to the sharp, sudden sound of a record being torn from the player and shattered.
Add one more thanks to MASH for introducing this song to me. It would be nice if more shows and movies used the vast library of classical pieces. Remember all the tunes Bugs Bunny taught us? lol
I can't deny it I got to love Charles on mash and this brings me back to my late grandfather and now helps my 5 year old sleep and me as well sometimes I much confess M*A*S*H really ahead of there time cause I'm only 34 and watch it on Hulu every night
Thanks a lot for the reference to MASH last episode. It was so heart touching also to me when I have seen this scenes. I have bought the complete Mozart Collection before the film was over.
My first exposure to this beautiful piece of music was through the MASH tv show. When Charles Emerson Winchester lll teaches POWS with musical abilities to play it.
I saw that scene when very badly injured musician were under Charles hands and it was very very sad.. i almost cried because all the story with musician i liked so much :)
Shows that breeding always tells ! many other episodes which depict the deeply humanistic nature of Charles Emerson Winchester the Third under all that Beacon Hill snobery! 1) candy for neighborhood under-privileged children。and realizing that "it is sadly inappropriate to give dessert to a child who has had no meal"。 2) encouraging Pvt David Sheridan, in peace time a professional pianist, who has suffered debilitating injury to his right hand: "Because the gift does not lie in your hands. I have hands, David. Hands that can make a scalpel sing. More than anything in my life I wanted to play, but I do not have the gift. I can play the notes, but I cannot make the music. You've performed Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Chopin. Even if you never do so again, you've already known a joy that I will never know as long as I live. Because the true gift is in your head and in your heart and in your soul. "
There were glimpses of Charles' goodness throughout his time at the 4077th, but, yes, this episode presented it most clearly. As further evidence of his inner change, he leaves the 4077th riding beside the driver in a garbage truck, with no complaining.
Thank you for this. I think the both the situation as well as the way it was played on MASH made this piece sound much sadder. NOTE: The musicians were Chinese, not Korean.
I watched the finale episode again last night 11/11/24 and was sad when the Chinese musicians died. I felt very sorry for Charles portrayed brilliantly by David Ogden Stiers. I'm glad he chose Mozart one of my favorite composers. May the actor rest in peace.
reminds me of MASH all the time, and makes me water up thinking the scene when Charles sees one them dead later on. What a scene when he breaks the record. That does make you cry, especially when they are driving off. And 2 DISLIKES? come one now.
Allow me to point out that the musicians were not Korean but Chinese. After General MacArthur made the Incheon Landing, the U.N. forces moved up all the way to the northern border of the Korean Penisula, at which point the Chinese army intervened. From then on the fight was almost between the Allied forces and the Chinese, since the North Korean army had almost been wiped out. I thought I'd just make the record straight.
So much emotion, so much beauty, so much sadness, all that combined in 11 years of a fantastic TV show... ... and it changed nothing. Even in 2023, USA is the most war-hungry nation on the planet, provoking wars everywhere. Just like they said in the finale - investing 200 million USD to rebuild Korea and another 200 million to fund war in Vietnam. If only all nations in the world learned already...
A truly fantastic masterpiece i just wish that todays music didn't have to turn into the garbage that comes out of Justin Bieber and all of 1 directions ass. no more class these days.
I know I look like and act like I cant finace my way to the zoo this is someting you guys don't know about me sometimes i like listing to Mozart to relax ! have since jr high school lol wired huh !
"He wasn't even a soldier." Boy, this i cried, when I saw that scene! xS And I cried even more when he walked into his tent afterwards and smashed the record.
I love this piece of music so much - its so beautiful.
Charles was always my favorite character. His part in the finale always gets the tears going.
I saw the original when it aired in 1983, and watched it agin on 11/11/22. It brought tears then AND NOW-39 years early!
He wasn't even a soldier, he was a musician - MASH Goodbye Farewell Amen

“For me, music was always a refuge from this miserable experience,
now it will always be a reminder"
❤
Probably the most tragic "memory" a classical music lover could LOSE over a war experience!
Damn......

Introduced us to "The Barber of Seville."
Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.
During this mess of 2020, I just finished binge-watching the complete series on DVD, finishing with the movie.
So I played this at solo ensemble this past weekend and im going to state for it! Such a beautiful piece. Mozart is truly my favorite composer!
I can't deny it I got to love Charles on mash and this brings me back to my late grandfather and now helps my 5 year old sleep and me as well sometimes I much confess M*A*S*H really ahead of there time cause I'm only 34 and watch it on Hulu every night

My first exposure to this beautiful piece of music was through the MASH tv show. When Charles Emerson Winchester lll teaches POWS with musical abilities to play it.
David Ogden Stiers, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan, William Christopher, Larry Linville, Allan Arbus

Thank you for this. I think the both the situation as well as the way it was played on MASH made this piece sound much sadder. NOTE: The musicians were Chinese, not Korean.

Rest in peace, David/Charles. Dolce . . .

One of the greatest

yeah i know this song from MASH as well, i love it when Winchester goes and smashes the record at the end, bloody good scene!
it was a group of chinese army musicians
this music is so kool, everyone should listen to this music
I heard it from MASH as well and decided to look it up.
Ogden-stiers was really one of the few actors in the series who didn't over blow his part.
reminds me of MASH all the time, and makes me water up thinking the scene when Charles sees one them dead later on. What a scene when he breaks the record. That does make you cry, especially when they are driving off. And 2 DISLIKES? come one now.
I hear this song makes me think of major Charles windchester the third. 💋
Good memory
What a beautiful piece of audio zanadu.
Major Charles Winchester III..
Well fuck, I'll never listen to this the same way again, thanks to that show. Damn, I really loved that piece.

This helps me do my homework c:
Imagine Charles' changing facial expressions making love to music 😂
(painfully) No! No! No! nonono dolce...dolce...espressivo....
Ama : love
Deus: God
AmaDeus
Esta composición se describe en 2 palabras : Obra Maestra
*SMASH* 😢
they were Chinese POWs
They weren't even soldiers
please...... Mozart

@simonrac
i think it is very touching
This IS my homework. Critical musical analysis.
Vevo not control this music, Because this is real music!
A truly fantastic masterpiece i just wish that todays music didn't have to turn into the garbage that comes out of Justin Bieber and all of 1 directions ass. no more class these days.
i agree 100% greatest music from the 1950s 1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s period and listening in to the far future and watching music videos!
I know I look like and act like I cant finace my way to the zoo this is someting you guys don't know about me sometimes i like listing to Mozart to relax ! have since jr high school lol wired huh !
@Shifticek: I did. :-)
someone here who actualy didnt look this up because it was in Mash' last episode?
Brodne y I'm sure there is someone by now but I'm not that guy. I came here because of MASH.
I have to play this for NYSMA as a solo. I'm still in middle school. Seems legit? I'm going to die
how is that an issue
My only issue with this is that they weren't Korean. They were Chinese.
Nur Gott ist größer!
How many others were brought here by the final episode of MASH? 🥲
